Falcons dominate SE Raleigh, 4-0. advance to second round
It was truly a wonderful night. Though we were celebrating our seniors, and all that they have brought to the program, we also had to win our first state playoff game. We were really counting on all the ladies to take care of business during the game, so that we could give our attention to our deserving seniors. The ladies did not disappoint, and our seniors and reserves played well for the beginning and end of the game.We started all our seniors, including the injured Shea Reynolds, who played like she was 100%. The seniors, and 3 juniors, played very well for the first 15 minutes of the game, and created plenty of chances. They also did not give up a shot against. All performed admirably. Once we got in our regulars, we were finally able to score. After what seemed like forever, with visions of a long, low scoring game, Tori Krause opened things up with a long strike, moving central from the left side, placing it just under the crossbar, with Olivia Meek getting the assist. Just before halftime, Grace Hamashima finished a great run up the right side, set up by Ashley Shaffer, and put us up by two. The possession during the first half, and really for the whole game, was as good as I have seen it from us. We resisted the long ball, and instead kept Southeast from attacking by keeping the ball. The defense was pressuring nicely, particularly Michaela Clarke, to keep Southeast Raleigh from getting a shot in the first half. In the second half, we kept the pressure up, and about 13 minutes in, Reilly Brown got to a ball inside the box and placed it in to give us a comfortable lead. Four minutes later, she finished another ball in nearly the same position to extend the lead to four. Grace Hamashima and Maria Rodriguez gave Reilly the assists on those plays. From that point on, we got the seniors and the reserves the play the rest of the way, but they didn't let down any. They allowed us to finish the game with no shots against, saving Morgan Burk from having to do anything but pick up though balls. I believe the story behind the win was our central midfield, who is almost always responsible for good possession. Ashley Shaffer, Jordan Vezina, and Maria Rodriguez controlled the game. Our Green Hope team cannot thank our seniors enough for the season they have given us so far. It was their leadership, comraderie, and attitude that created the team we have now. Hopefully, they realized it tonight. Keris Evans, Maria Rodriguez, Cameron Lasater, Meagan Shea, Shea Reynodlds, Emily Dunn, Rachel Wells, and Morgan Burk: Ladies, thank you for all the work, attention, and drive that you have given to me, and given to this team. Next up, on Friday, we host Chapel Hill, the team that is now famous for beating Broughton. Chapel Hill is good enough to end our season, if we don't go in on Friday prepared to play. The way we are playing right now, and as focused as the ladies are, I'm sure we will be ready. |
