Falcons hang tough to advance past Chapel Hill, 3-0
The score may read three to nothing, but this was a tight and chippy match. Chapel Hill came in believing they could win, and were willing to do what it took in order to win. They played us physical, and at times got under our skin. We were able to keep our heads, for the most part, and secure the win.
Our finishing was alright, putting away 3 goals on 28 shots, but they were extremely close on many others, and did a great job of creating chances. The ladies continued playing wonderful possession, and it kept us from losing control in this match. Fact of the matter is, along with our improving our finishing at the end of our season, we have really started playing good possession, and the ladies now know where each other will be. For instance, our outside mids are making the same runs each play, and our forwards/central midfielders are finding them in stride, and almost making blind passes to them. It has really allowed our outsides to get involved, and give us plenty of attack.
Reilly Brown got us on the scoreboard with a goal 10 minutes in, finishing the ball off in the box from a pass off of Keris Evans. For whatever reason, it more inspired Chapel Hill than anything, and they threw lots of pressure at us from that point on. We were able to hold, but it was dangerous for a time. We turned things around when Reilly sent in a cross to the left side, where Ashley Stokes was crashing far post, and she headed it home. Once that second goal got in, we picked up our play again.
The second half got physical and chippy for many of our players. The Chapel Hill forwards got aggressive and under our skin, resulting in some tough plays in the back. But, once again, the defense held it together, including a sprawling save by Morgan Burk through Rachel Wells, to take away a dangerous chance. When Grace Hamashima got a hold of a ball along the right side, and took it in to score all by herself, we finally felt like we put the game away.
We can't thank our crowds enough for the support. Only in High School soccer do you get the feeling of the crowd behind you. At what classic tournament or game would you have a chorus of "Amazing Grace" when Hamashima put in her goal? I've enjoyed coaching both, but nothing beats that high school atmosphere.
Now we face an extremely dangerous team in Sanderson, who has found the scoring to go along with their traditionally solid defense. Our ladies had better come prepared, as Sanderson is the type of team that can knock us off if we are not careful. We will do our best to keep that from happening.
