Falcons strong in loss to Leesville, 1-0
One might look at the result of this game and think that I would be disappointed with the team. In fact, the opposite was true. I was quite pleased at the play, and with our team. I saw several things I needed to see in this game, and saw many steps taken that we needed to take.
At the start, I thought some of our players were a bit overwhelmed, either with the lousy game conditions or the fact that we were playing the state champions from last year. As a result, we had an early goal scored on us before we could really get geared up. But once we got a little confidence and belief, the ladies realized that we could compete at that level. And considering Leesville's high level of skill and ability to play together, that was a great thing to see.
There were positions where we were at a disadvantage, and some where we were winning at, but nowhere on the field were we outclassed at. I was able to get a decent rotation, something done by design, as I wanted to see some of our reserves against this level of team, to find out who we could depend on at crunch time. The reserves proved themselves to me by playing at a high level.
Also a big deal was the fact that we played physical with them, something we have just started doing at Green Hope. In the past, we have been just a finesse team, but on this night, we played physical and tough, something we must continue. We had standouts in Ashely Stokes, Ashley Shaffer, Caitlin Messina, Shea Reynolds, and particularly Morgan Burk. She was simply outstanding, and truly elevated her game in the goal.
As well as we did, we have much to do. In the first 6 games of the season, we only sometimes played focused. The last 4, I have seen a team that will not be outworked (though we tied Leesville in the hustle category, we certainly were not beaten), and we are consistently getting better. Only since we started doing that have I seen us improving as a team, these last 4 games. That means we have only started our improvement, and by the time we get through with the regular season, we will be a much better team. If we keep our heads on straight through the rest of the regular season, we have a good shot at the conference championship. If we can do that, the sky is the limit. Our number remains at 8, and a tough Athens Drive team awaits us after spring break.
