Falcon defense leads way to win over Fuquay, 2-0
This was a nice result in a place that has traditionally given us trouble. Fuquay is a physical team, and one that plays fast and hard. We typically have a hard time holding them out of the goal. Though the defense played well, Morgan Burk was our standout in the back today, stepping forward at the right time, boxing (two fisted) out a cross, and snagging a high ball that could have easily been in.
Our starting defenders all played well, that being Shea Reynolds, Emily Dunn, Haley Rafols, and Rachel Wells. When reserves Michaela Clarke, Caitlin Messina, Haley Patsey, and Carly Blaeser stepped in for them, there was no fall off.
Offensively, we still are suffering the same sickness. We are building up attack, and getting chances, but not finishing at the rate that we would like to. On the plus side, we are possessing the ball, threatening the defense, and controlling the games, but still need to put our opponents away by finishing off chances. It is coming, but it has been progressing slowly. We were hopeful that running a 3 front would solve these concerns, but the ladies don't seem comfortable in it.
It seemed that we would have a high scoring night, when in the first 5 minutes, Ashley Shaffer put in a Reilly Brown cross ( one touch, I believe) to start the game off right. There was much parental celebration. We threatened consistently after that, but Fuquay's extraordinary keeper kept the ball out. We couldn't muster up another until midway though the second half, with Reilly Brown finishing an Ashley Stokes cross. Though she didn't get the goal, Keris Evans was fantastic in the attack today. She constantly worked the near sideline, and was a consistent threat. Maria Rodriguez and Jordan Vezina also kept up a high level of play throughout.
Next up, weather allowing, is Lee County at home, another conference game, and counting match. We will likely be without Ashley Stokes for a bit, who hurt a knee, though we are hopeful it is just a slight sprain. That aside, it was a successful night. 9 more to go.
