Falcons rebound with strong win against Cary, 5-1
This was a good rebound game. Regardless of the result, I saw the hustle, hunger and focus that was not there in the first half of the Apex game. We outworked our opponent, and considering Cary has always been a hard working team, that says a lot. The difference is that we did it from the first whistle, and never let up. You just can't start that kind of play in the middle of the game, the other team has momentum and confidence already. This time, we started fast, scoring in the first 8 minutes.

Reilly Brown, who has been doing more time at a forward position for us, scored the first goal with a nice shot from the pass of Keris Evans, who started the play breaking through down the right side. It was a pretty goal, and just what we need to get our confidence back. The second goal came from Olivia Meek, who made a wonderful far side run from the outside mid to hit it home from point blank range off a cross from Tori Krause. Tori really made the play happen, with a good aggressive run down the right sideline, setting up her fellow outside mid for the goal. She had a great game today.

Halftime found us up 2-0, and for the most part controlling the game. We took 17 shots and converted 2, a ratio we still need to work on. Part of the problem was that Cary has an excellent keeper, and she covered up most of our shots, particularly the long range ones. We needed to work the ball in closer against her. We also tried a 3 front in the beginning of the second half, a formation that cause some confusion for our team, but one we may continue to play with.

The 3 front did net a goal, setting up Grace Hamashima in the 6 yard box for an easy shot. The assist, all the way from the halfline, came from a blazing run from Ashley Shaffer, who started the game at defense, then moved to midfield. At forward today, she set up two goals. We switched out of the 3 front (pleasing most of the players on the team), and got another goal, this time from Tori Krause, hitting home a cross from Anya Koren. We finished up our scoring with a goal from Jordan Vezina in front of the net, who hit a one touch shot, redirecting a cross from Ashley Shaffer. Ashley Stokes had some great runs on the left side, but we just couldn't convert on her set ups.

Maria Rodriguez was a bit banged up going into the game, but she turned in her usual tough play at central mid, and Rachel Wells, who is playing more at central mid lately, also controlled that spot nicely. In the back, we were organized and in control. On the one real course of play breakdown, Haley Patsey recovered well enough to pressure the break-away, allowing Morgan Burk to cover up the ball. Michaela Clark was strong in replacing an under the weather Haley Rafols. Shea Reynolds and Emily Dunn kept things organized and the defense connected. The lone goal against us can be chalked up to a well taken free kick that has some serious swerve on it.

Finally, the freshmen showed what the future of Green Hope soccer should look like, and it is a bright future. Grace Hamashima, Caitlin Messina, Olivia Meek and Haley Patsey performed well, and I am comfortable calling on any of them as the need arises.

Next, weather allowing, we travel to Fuquay-Varina, a team that always gives us trouble due to their physical play. Of course, it doesn't matter the opponent now, each game is crucial, as we need to win out (in conference) to assure ourselves of 1st. Anything less, and we don't control our own destiny. After tonight, our number is down to 10.
