GC Baseball Goes 2-1 in Catholic Classic

The Golden Eagles entered the annual Catholic Classic in Lafayette winners of six in a row and seven of the last eight games.  GCHS took on Scecina Memorial in the opening game on Friday night.  So. Cody Brazill took the mound and helped lead the Golden Eagles to an 8-1 victory and the teams 7th straight win, adding extra incentive to an always anticipated match-up with fellow diocesan high school, and tournament host, Lafayette Central Catholic.  Despite a rocky start Guerin Catholic hung close but could not quite overcome the early deficit falling 6-5 after getting the tying run to 2nd in the top of the 7th.

With a slight hope on the possibility of still winning the Classic Championship, the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead on Seton Catholic to win 6-2 behind a solid combined effort on the mound from Seniors Mark Boylan and Danny Kennedy.

The 2-1 weekend was good for a runner-up finish and moved the season record to 13-7.  The Golden Eagles will finish out the regular season with home games on Wednesday (Lapel), Thursday (Covenant Christian) and Friday (Lutheran) with the final game of the season on Saturday @ Taylor.

The sectional draw is expected to be announced Tuesday morning 5/14.

Senior Night Victory

After falling behind 7-0 on Senior Night, the seniors responded in amazing fashion. Leading off the bottom of the 2nd Gabe Gaynor singled and two batters later fellow senior Jay Kaskie blasted a 3-run HR. 5 solid innings of relief by So. Cody Brazill and Sr. Johnmichael Augustinovicz allowed the Golden Eagles to win it in the bottom of the 8th. Augie walked and Grant Gaynor sacrificed him to second setting up the game winning single off the bat of Sr. Luke Hammons. The win brings the Golden Eagles’s record to 7-6.

One of the 'original' Golden Eagles is on the verge of becoming Depauw University's career save leader.  Guerin Catholic alumnus Joe Wojda ('09) has 6 saves so far this season for his Tigers team, tying the school record in that category.  Joe is still at the top of several GC Baseball career statiscal categories.  He leads our program in:

  • Wins (14)

  • Complete Games (12)
  • Shutouts (3)

All of this was in addition to being named Academic All-State during his senior season.  Best of luck to Joe and his Depauw Tigers teammates.
