Season Ends

image_name2

One of the best seasons in the history of the Golden Eagle Baseball Program came to an abrupt end on Monday.  For the 3rd straight year GCHS ends the season as the sectional runner-up.  This years squad won 18 games for the second straight season ending with an 18-9 record.

The nine seniors on this years team (many of which have been starters since their sophomore season) have contributed to much to this program over the span of their careers.  Johnmichael Augustinovicz, Mark Boylan, Jake Dunbar, Gabe Gaynor, Luke Hammons, Jay Kaskie, Danny Kennedy, Luke Labus, and Greg Sobecki, are the definition of "student-athlete," and have the work-ethic and passion to do great things for our world.  They will be missed on the field, but never forgotten in our program.

GCHS Advances to Sectional Final

image_name2

The Golden Eagles advance to the Sectional Championship and will play the Brebeuf Braves on Monday @Brebeuf @3pm.

In the semi-final, GCHS (18-8) was able to hold off Mt. Vernon 4-3 in large part to the combined effort of seniors Johnmichael Augustinovicz and Mark Boylan on the bump, picking up the win and the save respectively.

Monday's tilt will be a re-match of last year's sectional final, but hopefully not a repeat.

GC Baseball Goes 2-1 in Catholic Classic

The Golden Eagles entered the annual Catholic Classic in Lafayette winners of six in a row and seven of the last eight games.  GCHS took on Scecina Memorial in the opening game on Friday night.  So. Cody Brazill took the mound and helped lead the Golden Eagles to an 8-1 victory and the teams 7th straight win, adding extra incentive to an always anticipated match-up with fellow diocesan high school, and tournament host, Lafayette Central Catholic.  Despite a rocky start Guerin Catholic hung close but could not quite overcome the early deficit falling 6-5 after getting the tying run to 2nd in the top of the 7th.

With a slight hope on the possibility of still winning the Classic Championship, the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead on Seton Catholic to win 6-2 behind a solid combined effort on the mound from Seniors Mark Boylan and Danny Kennedy.

The 2-1 weekend was good for a runner-up finish and moved the season record to 13-7.  The Golden Eagles will finish out the regular season with home games on Wednesday (Lapel), Thursday (Covenant Christian) and Friday (Lutheran) with the final game of the season on Saturday @ Taylor.

The sectional draw is expected to be announced Tuesday morning 5/14.

GCHS Alumnus Closing Out College Career

Joe Wojda (DePauw '13; GCHS '09)

One of the 'original' Golden Eagles is on the verge of becoming Depauw University's career save leader.  Guerin Catholic alumnus Joe Wojda ('09) has 6 saves so far this season for his Tigers team, tying the school record in that category.  Joe is still at the top of several GC Baseball career statiscal categories.  He leads our program in:

  • Wins (14)
  • Starts (27)
  • Complete Games (12)
  • Shutouts (3)
  • Innings Pitched (162)

All of this was in addition to being named Academic All-State during his senior season.  Best of luck to Joe and his Depauw Tigers teammates.

Keep Swinging...
