Our ELEVENTH Spring Season--2008

If you are a girl who can skate, but you've never played ice hockey, this program is for YOU!

Yes, many of our participants are experts, but they play here for two reasons, and one of them is to provide a fun and comfortable program for NEW players.

Isn't it intimidating to play with experts? In our games, every team has three levels of players: beginner, intermediate and expert. These three groups of five skaters each rotate every two minutes, so beginners play with beginners, and so on.

You won't actually play WITH your expert and intermediate teammates, but you will be on the same team, and your goals will count just as much as theirs, so they will be rooting for you and helping you become a better player.

Our hand-picked coaches and referees have been with the program for years, so they understand its purposes. We're there to play, to learn, to develop a love of the game. Our schedule emphasizes playing, at the expense of practice, because attendance records indicate that games bring out more girls in the busy spring program. We know the value of practice, however, so we are constantly looking for ways to add more practice time to the schedule.

It's all happening at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford, Connecticut. Most of our players are from Stamford and nearby towns, but we've had girls travel from the Hartford area and the other side of the Hudson River, because there just aren't many programs like this one.

Registration opens in early January. Placement exercises are in early March, and the games run from mid-March through early May. Please use the following links to access the registration form, schedule and other information:

To ensure that you will find us next season, please make a note of our home page address, www.spinnakers.org. The Stamford Spinnakers Girls Ice Hockey Program is the host of Stamford Girls Spring Hockey.

Since 1998, Girls Spring Hockey has provided a comfortable and welcoming opportunity for skaters of elementary and high school ages to try hockey and get better at it. For our strongest players, GSH is an opportunity to play with and against each other, as well as to contribute to the development of less experienced players. Participants compete at six (6) different age and skill levels, from Junior Beginner to Senior Expert. Every girl gets equal playing time and everyone has the opportunity to contribute to her team's success.

Girls Spring Hockey introduces skating girls to hockey, but it does not teach girls how to skate. Skating lessons are available in local rinks, and inexpensive public skating sessions and free rollerblading are two great opportunities to become a stronger skater.

Ice hockey is a great game for boys and girls, a game of skill, calculation, fitness and teamwork. For girls, it offers the special experience of breaking through a barrier. Make no mistake about it: some people still believe this is a boys game. Fortunately, a growing number of schools and colleges realize that girls play this game beautifully. Interscholastic opportunities abound! Learn the game with us, and who knows where it will lead. Many of our former participants have played at all levels of college hockey!

Let's share the fun. Tell your friends about Girls Spring Hockey. The biggest challenge in recruiting a new player is her concern that we don't want her to play because she is inexperienced. Some sports programs may operate that way, but this one is just the opposite. The less experience you have in hockey, the more you can benefit from Girls Spring Hockey. Join us!
