2006 Final Game Notes and Year Review
 | |
4/20/06
The Varsity Eagles capped off a tremendous season. It's their second undefeated G.I.L. record in three years (2004 & 2006). Team Hardware finished off right, they went out on top. Even with the late start to the season, they were able to right the ship. This team has earned the right to be mentioned in the same category as Courtney Nelson, Jason Wilson and Richard Laurent's undefeated 1999 & 2000 teams. Or these Eagles can be talked about in the same breath as Rashid Dunbar, Adrian Thomas and Charles Boyd's 1994-1996 teams.
This unit has been together since the fourth grade, winning championship after championship. But they had to get in the gym, they had to show up to the games. This year they instilled fear in their opponents, when they walked into opposing gyms. Leonard, Hector, Asaad and Chris made it happen when they were on the court at the same time.
Leonard showed nothing but upside this year. The 6'3" monster patrolled the block, offensively & defensively, with authority. The main focus of the Eagles' offense could not be stopped in the low post. He takes his skills next year to Danny Hurley's gym at St. Benedict's.
Hector showed all facets of the game this season. This 5'10" beast, passed, dribbled, shot, posted-up, rebounded, boxed-out, and defended. Though no play was ever called for him, Hec was still able to lead the team in offensive and defensive categories. He did whatever he was asked to do. This will serve him well when takes his game to the next level.
Asaad led his team all season. His game has turned the corner. His control of the game is exemplary. When he had to distribute the ball, it's was done on command. When he had to score, he could do it at will. He was also the focal point of the Eagle's defensive scheme. The coach who gets him next year will be surprised.
Chris has meant so much to this crew. In the earlier years, Chris was the "6th Man", a defensive catalyst. As the seasons went on, the 5'8" guard added ball handling to his game, then a jump shot. And now he can go to the rack with authority. "Clutch" as he's called could also add some late in the game theatrics. Marist is getting an always work in progress player, next year.
The Supporting Cast put Team Hardware over-the-top:
Ike filled-in that missing piece for the starters. His mix of speed and athleticism made-up for his inexperience on the court. He vastly improved this year. In the start of the season we had to slow Ike down, to teach him the basics of the game. By season's end, he was back at full speed. Ike takes the show on the road to St. Patrick's, next year.
Femi was the x-factor this season. As the "6th Man", all Femi had to do was fill in defensively, but he decided to bring his shooting accuracy too. He is ready to dominate next year. Last year, Femi put the 5th & 6th grade team on his back. Carrying them to G.I.L., CYO and Good Shepherd titles along the way.
Evans is the Answer. Literally the fastest kid in the gym. For two years in a row he has been asked to fill a role when players were on academic probation or sick. And for two year in a row he has answered the call. He didn't just come in and played defense,he played ball. Evan was counted upon fill-in some big shoes and he stepped up every time.
Manny, Khalil, Calvin, Wilfred and Shorty made their marks in spots this season. They have made dramatic changes for the better. They look to take their game from steps to leaps, next season.

Wednesday, in their second taste of action, the Lady Eagles were victorious against Trinity B team of Caldwell. 'Jo-Jo' MCalister finally got loose and put it on the defense. She finished with 20 points. And like Pippen to her Jordan, Lyndia Valentin score 10 points. Janita Davis and 'Ridgewood' Ulysses chimed in with 2 points each. The Eagles posted their first victory of the season, 34-25.
Saturday, the Boy Eagles were in semi-final action at the GSA(Nutley) Christmas Tournament.
The J.Varsity won against GSA(Nutley). The Varsity advanced against Sorrow. The same Sorrows, who had eliminated them in G.I.L. play-offs for three years straight. So this game had more meaning than it seamed. Already gripping with the fact they had to play Sorrows without their star reserve, Femi Oyedele, they received some bad news hours before the game. 'Clutch' Bazilio was home with a fever and would miss the game. But 30 minutes before start time, Bazilio showed up to play, 'Willis Reed' style. 'Clutch' inspired them to a 60-55 win. Hector Swain poured out 22 points. 'Big-Time' Auguste muscled his way to 18 points. Asaad Bell put up 11 points. 'Clutch' Bazilio's 5 points in the stat book could never show how he helped deliver this victory. Chikezie, Stewart and St Come ended with 4pts, 2pts & 1pt respectively.
Sunday, the Eagles had a Sunday revival at Sorrows of Maplewood.
The Varsity Girls continued their winning ways in 28-13 win. 'Jo-Jo' MCallister came on strong in the second half to finish with 16 points. Lyndia Valentin played strong with 7 points. Shaniece Bannister and 'Ridgewood' Ulysses put up 3pts & 2pts for the cause.
The J. Varsity picked up where the girls left off, with a 38-23 victory. They started off with a 11-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Front line stars, Louis Laine and Lamar Garrett each had 8 points. Leader of the band, Samorri Johnson had 6 points. Fourth grader, Jamie Okoli had 5 points. Starters, Jamil Aktab and Jaleel Johnson chimed in with 4 points. The newcomer, Robert Phillips, finished 3 points.
Our Varsity Boys finished the deed, with a emotional 53-23 win. They were set back early with the news of 'Clutch' Bazilio's worsened health that morning. Bazilio would not be there for them today. They used Bazilio's courage to rally themselves to victory. 'Big-Time' Auguste rebounded from first-half turn-overs to lead with 16 points. Asaad Bell looked unstoppable with his 14 points. Swain pushed through with 7 points. Seventh grader, St. Come stepped up big in his first start of the year. He finished with 6 points. Hilaire and Oyawusi ended with 2 points each.

Wednesday, the Varsity Boys faired well against St. Michael's of Union. J.V. weren't so fortunate; they had a tough time keeping up with the 5th & 6th team.
Sunday, the 3rd & 4th rolled into action, with a 21-20 victory. These young Eagles lead most of the way until, they let St. Catherine's back in the game in fourth quarter. Trailing by one point, with less than 30 seconds left in the game. Jamie Okoli drove to the basket and missed but Anthony Odige rebounded it and nailed a jumper from the foul line, to seal the win. Jamie Okoli woke up in the second half for a dominating performance, scoring 11pts. Olvania Hilaire, one of the two girls on the team, followed with 4pts. Wayne Wong, a Second grade in his 2nd tour of duty with the Eagles, netted 4pts.
The Varsity steamrolled through their game to a 67-37 victory. They put points on the board early and often. Hector Swain led the scoring with 15pts. Asaad Bell match that total with 12pts. Reserve Khalil Adams had a surprising output with 9pts. Bazilio and Shular hit for 8pts & 7pts. Seventh graders Oyedele and Hilaire went for 5pts & 3pts. Chikezie, Stewart, St Come and Udoh all chipped in with 2pts.
J. Varsity continued the winning with a 65-35 victory. The Junior Eagles flexed their muscles in their first regular season game. Louis Laine had a monster of a game, finishing with 25pts. Lamar Garrett worked his way to 16pts. Samorri Johnson followed-up with his 13pts. Jaleel Johnson and Jamil Aktab hit for 6pts & 2pts.
The Lady Eagles came a quarter short completing the sweep. They were set back 27-20. Without any scrimmages or games, they look promising in their first four quarters of the season. Our ladies had a strong 3 quarters, defensively and offensively. But the defense faltered in the last period. The Varsity Girls were led by Lyndia Valentin with 11pts. Shaniece Bannister supported the cause with 5pts. And "Jo-Jo" MCallister put up 4pts and a quandary of blocks to hold the opponents at bay.

The Varsity Boys prevailed victorious over all comers this weekend:
Friday, the 7th & 8th graders took on St. Peters. The Eagles took control of the game from the first quarter, pacing themselves to a 39-11 win. The balanced attack was led by Leonard 'Big-Time' Auguste's low post maneuvers. He finished with 9 points. Chris 'Clutch' Bazilio put up 7pts, Evans St. Come 6pts. Bell, Hilaire & Okoli all had 4pts. Ikeena 3pts and Oyedele finished with 2pts.
Saturday morning, the elder Eagles had a slow start in the scrimmage against St. John's Vianney. They were caught off guard by the sharpshooters of Colonia. They woke up in the second half to bring it to a 2 point deficit in the 4th quarter with 5.6 second to go. Bell brought up the ball and passed the rock to Oyedele, on the wing. For a seventh grader, Femi Oyedele wasn't shy about taking the last shot. He hoisted the potential game-winning three-pointer without hesitation. On the missed shot, the rebound was handled by the elder eagle, Hector Swain. Swain bullied his way in for the game-tieing put back. The scrimmage ended at 57-57. These Eagles showed that they work hard under adversity.
Saturday afternoon, the 7th & 8th graders faced GSA of Nutley. Defense took care of this game. Asaad Bell's defensive wizardry lead to his 17 points. 'Big-Time' Auguste mauled his way to 13 points. 7th graders Oyedele and Hilaire had 10pts and 11pts respectively. Swain followed up with 6pts. Oyawusi & Udou both had 2pts. They won 61-26.
Sunday, the Varsity faced Our Lady of Lake, a week after they beat them in the Slamfest. The Eagles had a uphill battle with three starters in foul trouble in the first quarter. The Eagles worked through it for a 64-33 victory. 'Clutch' Bazilio battle through foul problems to lead the team with 16 points. Hector Swain powered his way to 15 points. Femi Oyedele chipped in with 10 points. Auguste and Bell plagued with foul problems all game, finished with 6pts & 3pts. St. Come & Adams both had 4pts. Okoli finished with 2pts.
J.V. Boys bounced back from poor showings in their opening game in the Tournament and the scrimmage with St. John Vianney, to win their last two games. They had lost star guard Samorri Johnson to an eye injury over the break. He returned Sunday, with a strong performance to help them win two back-2-back. They finished with a 2-1 record in their bracket, looking to advance.

The Varsity Boys had victories over St Patricks of Chatam and Our Lady of the Lake for the Slamfest Championship. It's their third title in a row. The 5th & 6th Boys lost a heartbreaker to St. Vincent's of Madison but were victorious in the consolation round game against St.Peter's.
V BOYS 2-0(0-0)/2005 Preseason Lake Slamfest Champions, JV BOYS 1-1(0-0)
11/4/05
7th & 8th Boys face off against GYM Bad Boyz of Irvington in a preseason match-up.
Recap: The starting five looked real good, despite having played only a little time together this season. Every one was back: Asaad Bell, Hector Swain, Chris Bazillio and Leonard Auguste. They shook off the rust to have an impressive showing. Too many turnovers and defensive lapses, but they will go away as soon as the Eagles start to gel together. Go Eagles!!!
