Greenjackets advance in playoffs

GLENS FALLS -- The Greenjackets didn’t look so hot in their first 25 minutes of playoff football.

They came up empty on their first four possessions, succeeding only in racking up turnovers and penalty yardage. But no worries. The defense was fine.

The Jackets put together two touchdowns and a safety to beat the Tri-County Tigers 16-0 in their North American Football League playoff opener at East Field. The Jackets earned a chance to face the Southern Tier Warriors at home on Saturday in the next round.

"With this team I don’t really get concerned,’’ Greenjackets quarterback Mike Leonbruno said. "I know they’re going to step it up and come through.’’

The Jackets’ defense carried the night, forcing four Tri-County fumbles and generally keeping the Tigers from moving the ball. Most of the Tigers’ yardage came on a couple of fourth-quarter drives.

"Tonight our defense finally came together,’’ coach John Millett said. "That was the whole key in the ballgame.’’

The Jackets were moving the ball fine, but their first four drives sputtered. They came up with a broad range of ways to fail.

The first drive ended with a dropped pass in the end zone. The second was killed by a fumble. The third ended with an interception. Then the fourth was halted by a couple of penalties — one nullifying a touchdown — and a missed field goal.

"I think it took us so long to get going because we had a week off,’’ Leonbruno said. "We were slow starting, but we’ve been slow starting all year. I knew in the second half we’d come out and play better.’’

"Late in the season, you only get to practice once a week,’’ Millett said. "You expect a little bit of (sloppiness), but we had more of that tonight than we expected. The defense helped us out.’’

The Jackets finally put it together with a solid late second-quarter drive that started at their own 21.

Leonbruno found Larry Alberts on a pair of passes that got them close, Zorry Williams rushed it to the 6 yard line, and Leonbruno darted for the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

The safety came in the third quarter at a very opportune time. The Jackets had just fumbled away another prime scoring opportunity, but quarterback Ray Cummings was sacked for the two points on the next play.

The second Greenjackets touchdown was more like the efficient drives that have helped the team go unbeaten this season. Williams and Jack Gibbs carried the Jackets to the 40, and Leonbruno found Alberts on a long pass play over the middle for the touchdown.

Jackets All-Star Selections

The Glens Falls Greenjackets recently captured their 2nd straight Empire Division Title with a 12-0 record to date and a flawless 10-0 record during league play. The Greenjackets now enter a National Playoff picture with an upcoming home game coming to Glens Falls on Saturday October 10th at East Field. With a win on the 10th they will also host a 2nd playoff game at East Field on the 17th. Winning a division title as a team also brought on a lot of individual accolades. Recently, the North American Football League released its selection for 2009 Eastern Conference All-Stars. The Eastern Conference consists of teams from Virginia on north to New York and New England. 1st team members include running back Zorry Williams, offensive linemen OC West, Jake Wilde, and Nate Howe, D-Lineman Matt MacDonald, Linebacker Brian Howard, Defensive Backs Ed Byrnes and Jason Guzman, and Kicker Alex Quiggan. 2nd team members selected include Quarterback Mike Leonbruno, offensive linemen Josh Gosselin and Aaron Straight, and D-Lineman Camden Spencer. Also selected to Honorable Mention were wide receivers John Brennan, Larry Alberts, and Kamar Elliot, D-Linemen Desmond Burgess and Ryan Marviglio, Linebacker Mike Dennison, and Defensive Backs Ian Godfrey and Patrick Mills.

Zorry Williams broke the 1,000 yard rushing barrier for the season finishing 2nd in the league in total yards and 1st in the league in total touchdowns with 16. Paving the way for him was a highly regarded offensive line known affectionately as “The Pit Crew.” All 5 starting “Pit Crew” members were chosen as either 1st or 2nd team members as a tribute to their hard work and dedication. Wide Receivers John Brennan( 360 yards, 3 TD), Larry Alberts( 258 yards, 4 TD), and Kamar Elliot(366 yards, 9 TD) helped pace an offensive attack that landed the Greenjackets among the league best in several offensive categories ( scoring, yards per game, total yards). Quarterback Mike Leonbruno( 61% comp %, 1500+ yards, 26 total TD’s, and a 119 QB rating) capped off another stellar year while Kicker Alex Quiggan was a unanimous 1st team selection.

Defensively, linebacker Brian Howard finished with a team high 87 tackles, among the top 5 in the league, while Jason Guzman recorded a team high 7 Interceptions to pace a Greenjacket defense that allowed an impressive 12 points per game average. Defensive Linemen Desmond Burgess(4 sacks,32 tackles), Camden Spencer( 3 Fum. Fum. Rec., 28 Tackles), Matt MacDonald(3 sacks, 25 tackles), and Ryan Marviglio ( 22 tackles, 2 sacks) helped guide a stingy run defense. Ed Byrnes( 56 tackles, 2 Int.), Patrick Mills (29 tackles and 3 Int.) and Ian Godfrey( 2 Int.) stood strong in the secondary.

2009 Eastern Conference Playoff Preview provided by NAFL

2009 Playoff Preview

The road to Miami begins this weekend.  The 2009 NAFL Playoff brackets have been posted, so all teams know what obstacles they must overcome in order to make it to South Florida in November.  Let's start our playoff preview by looking at each conference.

Eastern Conference
Favorites:  Central Penn Piranha, Glens Falls Green Jackets, and South Jersey Lynx
Contender:  Hampton Roads Hurricanes
Dark Horse:  Chambersburg Cardinals

Central Penn Piranha (10-0)
Until recently, the Piranha have won the Eastern Conference every year.  The Lynx changed that be defeating the Piranha in the Conference Championship in 2006.  Last year was yet another disappointing season, as the Piranha lost to the now-defunct Connecticut Giants, also in the Conference Championship.  Inconsistency is the Achilles heel of Central Penn.  In 2009, one game they play like the best team in the league, and the next week they play like an average team.

Questions:  Are they over-rated?  Which team will show up during the playoffs?

Glens Falls Green Jackets (10-0)
The Green Jackets are making a strong case to be the new "Beast of the East."  They are solid in all phases of the game, and boast talented players at the skilled positions, including Eastern Conference Player of the Year candidate, running back Zorry Williams (#2 rusher in the league).  Now is the time for the Green Jackets to perform well.

Questions:  Can they win games outside of the Empire Division?  Will the attention on a national stage be too much?

South Jersey Lynx (9-1)
This isn't their first rodeo.  The Lynx won the Eastern Conference back in 2006, and were on the verge of heading to Orlando to play in the Championship Game, until a last-minute touchdown by the Nashville Storm ended their season.  South Jersey is always a threat to win the East, and 2009 is no different.

Questions:  Can they knock-off potential playoff opponents such as the Hurricanes, Piranha, and Green Jackets?  How well will they travel?

Hampton Roads Hurricanes (7-2)
Every year the Hurricanes win a game or two in the playoffs, and along the way they usually take one of the top teams down to the wire.  The Canes bring a lot of team speed and a solid defense to the table.

Questions:  Can their offense take it up a notch?  Do they have enough in the tank to notch rod wins against potential opponents such as the Lynx, Piranha, and Green Jackets?

Chambersburg Cardinals (6-4)
They've tasted the playoffs, but they haven't enjoyed their brief visits.  The Cardinals under-achieved in 2009, but all of that can change if they get hot during the playoffs.

Questions:  Was their near-upset of the Piranha a few weeks ago a fluke?  Will they get past the DC Explosion in the first round?

Colonials come up short against Greenjackets

Glens Falls quarterback Ian Godfrey (4) looks for a hole as he is surrounded by a host of Glove Cities defenders, including Jim Mears (55), Lou Emden (72) and Brandon Insognia (76) in Saturday’s North American Football League game at Broadalbin-Perth.

BBROADALBIN - The Glove Cities Colonials had no more big-play magic saved up for the last 24 seconds.

The Colonials lost a 49-41 shootout Saturday to the undefeated Glens Falls Greenjackets in a North American Football League at Broadalbin-Perth High?School.

They took possession with one last chance for overtime with 24 seconds to play and 90 yards between them and the end zone. They had used up their big plays to come back again and again and this time, three incompletions were followed by a fourth-down interception by Glens Falls' Patrick Mills at the Greenjackets 45-yard line to end the game.

"There's no quit in the team here - they keep coming back," Glove Cities coach Matt Capano said. "We know we're in every game we play, even if these guys are the No. 3 team in the country. We've still got a chance. Our offense can score. We had a lot of missed tackles, though. It's disappointing when you put up 41 points against these guys. That's a good output for us."

The missed tackles came most often against quarterback Ian Godfrey and tailback Zorry Williams, both of whom totalled over 100 yards on the ground.

Godfrey is the backup quarterback for the Greenjackets and was filling in while Mike Leonbruno was coaching his Warrensburg Central School team at a scrimmage in Lake George.

He stepped in to run for 130 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, while passing for 132 and a score on a 6-for-15 night.

"The offense did an outstanding job tonight," Glens Falls coach John Millett said. "And you've got to remember, that was not our starting quarterback. That's our backup quarterback and he did a hell of a job tonight."

Williams ran for 188 yards on 19 carries, scoring twice.

Most of the Colonials' big plays came through the air, but they opened the game with a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Brian Baldwin. Ralph Lott's extra point put them ahead 7-0 with just 25 seconds ticked off the clock.

Glens Falls evened it up quickly on a 25-yard run from Godfrey and took the lead before the end of the opening quarter when it was ruled Alex Heath recovered a punt at the 3-yard line and retreated to the end zone, where he was tackled for a safety. The Colonials argued Heath never had possession until he was in the end zone.

Glens Falls continued to pull away and then be reeled back in. The Greenjackets led 49-28 with eight seconds left in the third quarter after John Brennan caught a 50-yard scoring pass from Godfrey, but the Colonials defense finally started to shut them down in the fourth quarter and gave the offense the chance for a comeback.

"We knew it'd be another shootout," Capano said. "It came down to a few mistakes again. You can't take anything away from these guys, they're a great ball team."

Justin Kastner threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns on a 10-for-27 night, but also threw five interceptions. Two big interceptions came in the third quarter, both plucked from the air by Glens Falls middle linebacker Brian Howard.

When Kastner connected, he connected for big yards, especially when it was Brian Baldwin on the other end of the pass.

Baldwin caught five passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on receptions of 71, 47 and 56 yards. Add his kick returns and he finished with 363 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns.

Baldwin and Jason Quinn found ways to slip past their defenders, making several catches 5 or 10 yards behind the nearest defender. Quinn finished with three catches for 54 yards and a touchdown in limited action.

Glove Cities other touchdown came on the ground, a 1-yard surge by Jim Person, who finished with 25 yards on six carries. Chad Smith led the ground game with 35 yards on seven carries. Heath had 17 yards on two totes.

Just as the Colonials had trouble wrapping up on defense, Millett said he was disappointed with the Greenjackets' defense as their secondary looked vulnerable and several costly penalties helped the Glove Cities offense sustain a couple key drives.

"We've just got to get our defense tightened up," he said. "Defense and special teams played terrible tonight. That's something we've got to work on. But we're 9-0 overall, 7-0 in the league and the next three games are at home. The only thing that can happen is we can end up beating ourselves, which we almost did tonight."

Even with the loss, the Colonials (3-5) have a chance to reach the postseason. They have next week off, but then travel to play Tri-County and Southern Tier to finish the season. They have beaten Southern Tier and lost a close game to Tri-County.

"We've still got a good shot to make playoffs," Capano said. "We've got to come back and regroup."

NAFL declares this weekend "Showdown Saturday"

Showdown Saturday is what the NAFL is calling this weekend's slate of games and many will have playoff implications attached to them. The Jackets opponent this weekend, the Colonials, are in this boat. The Colonials are in a must win situation to stay alive in the playoff hunt as the Jackets look to maintain control of home field advantage. Kickoff is at 7:30 at Broadalbin-Perth High School. The Jackets won their previous meeting 33-25 in Glens Falls earlier this year.

The Jackets are currently ranked the #3 seed in the East behind the Central Penn Piranha and South Jersey Lynx. Hampton Roads based out of Virginia is 4th. South Jersey and Hampton Roads face off this weekend in a key match that could jump the Jackets up a spot with a win and a Lynx loss.

I tried to hand then out at practice Tuesday, but it was raining, and I noticed that most of you stuck the paper in your pocket...then i'm assuming you practiced...so you know, just throwing a wild guess out there, but i'm sure they became wet and are ruined...and this isn't high school, i don't want your crumbled and tore up paper :P

The apparel on the sheet is priced for players only and i'm debating whether or not I'd like to offer this apparel to fans...I'd like to keep it seperate so the team has there stuff and fans theres, etc..if you have any input on anything regarding apparel let me know, i'll do my best to work with you.

SO! print the order form, fill it out, bring it to me on Tuesday August 4th at the beginning of practice with the amount due and I will have your items hopefully the week after.

If you have any questions you can email/call me.

Thanks guys and keep it up.

 =) Loressa

Greenjackets cruise in preseason opener

GLENS FALLS -- If the regular season goes as well for the Glens Falls Greenjackets as their preseason opener went Saturday, they won't complain.

The Greenjackets dominated offensively and defensively in shutting out the Watertown Revolution 42-0 at Glens Falls High School's Putt LaMay Memorial Field.

Offensively, the Greenjackets scored 28 points in the second quarter, rushed for 211 yards and threw for 214 more. Defensively, Glens Falls held Watertown to 35 yards rushing on 31 attempts and 71 yards passing (with two interceptions).

Quarterback Mike Leonbruno started the 2009 campaign memorably. He was 5-for-7 passing for 214 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran another one in from 41 yards. His touchdown passes went for 28, 56 and 75 yards.

"We saw they were playing man and (rushing) a lot of guys," Leonbruno said. "We knew if we could get our blocks down, we could spring a couple. We have fast receivers and our O-line did a great job holding off that many guys."

The Greenjackets scored on their first drive of the game, covering 62 yards in 10 plays, culminating with a 28-yard scoring strike from Leonbruno to Alex Quigan.

Glens Falls scored every time it had the ball in the second quarter. Leonbruno found Quigan behind the defensive backs for 56-yard scoring pass to make it 14-0. Then John Brennan gathered in a 75-yard pass from Leonbruno to make it 21-0. Leonbruno's 41-yard scamper made it 28-0 before Zorry Williams scored from 10 yards out as time expired in the half to give the Greenjackets a 35-0 lead.

"We picked up where we left off last year as far as the offensive line," said assistant head coach Bob Fish, who in John Millett's absence was acting head coach for the game. "We just executed well."

Williams added a 20-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Watertown only threatened to score near the end of the game, but Brian Leonard's interception in the end zone with 57 seconds left preserved the shutout.

"When our offense plays that well, we've got to play that well," Leonard said. "We were just doing our basic package, but it was working well, so no reason to show anything else."

"There is a lot of stuff we can do with this team; there's a lot of talent," Fish said.
