Green Hope's season ends with a 4-2 loss to West Johnston
Green Hope loses a well played playoff game to the Greater Neuse conference champion West Johnston, 4-2. Neither team committed an error, both had 7 hits, but WJ grouped 5 of their hits all in one inning, to score 3 runs, which along with some nice defensive plays by WJ's SS Kris Richards proved to be the difference in the game.
Dylan Kipp started for GH against WJ's Dillon Furlong, both pitched well, each going 6 innings and allowing 7 hits, with Kipp having 10 strikeouts, but Furlong able to better spread out the GH hits and only allowing 2 GH runs.
GH opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd, a leadoff triple by Kipp, with Adam Boghosian running, was driven in by a single from Jeff Weygandt. Jeff was thrown out trying to steal 2nd when a low throw from the catcher was nicely scooped by Richards while simultaneously tagging out Weygandt. Nolan Poythress followed with a single and David Teter with a walk, but GH only scored one in the inning. GH (1-0) after 2 innings.
Without a doubt the key inning was the 4th, as two key plays turned the game for WJ, as GH missed a chance to get a comfortable lead and momentum, and WJ coming back to not only get the momentum but also the lead.
In the top of the inning, with 1 out, Brent McLeroy doubled off wall in left, followed by a sharp single from Poythress with the speedy McLeroy held at 3rd. With runners at the corners, Poythress did a late steal of 2nd, which WJ did not contest. Teter then singled to drive in McLeroy, again putting runners at the corners and only 1 out, and GH up (2-0). This setup the first key play, as Teter also executed the late steal of 2nd, but this time WJ faked a throw to 2nd and instead threw to SS Richards as Poythress attempted to score from 3rd. But Richards made another outstanding scoop of a low throw from the catcher and then a strong throw home to just get Poythress out at the plate. GH only (2-0) after 3 1/2 innings.
In the bottom of the inning, WJ seemed renewed after the throw out at home, and led off with singles by Tanti and Richards to put runners at 1st and 2nd and no outs. This setup the second key play of the game as WJ tried to sacrifice bunt to get the tying runs in scoring position, but the bunt by Dupree managed to get past the charging GH infielders for a hit, now filling the bases with still no one out. After a strikeout, two consecutive singles had given WJ the lead. WJ (3-2) after 4 innings.
GH got the leadoff batter on base in each of the last 3 innings, but could not get anything else going, and WJ added an insurance run in the 6th for the win. WJ (4-2) final.
Kipp (2-5) pitched extremely well but got the loss, while Poythress was (2-3).
