Nolan Poythress leads Green Hope past Southeast Raleigh
Green Hope won the 2nd annual Matt Cossa Memorial, again over Southeast Raleigh. The Bulldogs rested most of their starters and brought up several JV players to play in the game.
Green Hope's starter, Nolan Poythress, had a huge game for the Falcons, going the distance (5 innings) for a complete game, 1 hit shutout. Only 3 SER batters reached base, one on a solid single past 2nd, another on a strikeout swinging at a ball in the dirt which got past the GH catcher, and the third on a throwing error on an infield chopper up the middle. Poythress struck out 4 and didn't walk a batter. Nolan also hit his team leading 5th home run of the season.
GH opened the scoring in the 2nd, Brent McLeroy beat out an infield hit, stole second, went to 3rd on a past ball, and scored on Poythress' ground out to short. GH (1-0) after 2 innings.
In the 3rd, GH broke open the game, scoring 6 runs. Eric Brady led off with a single, went to 2nd on an errant pickoff attempt, and scored on David Teter's grounder to short and the subsequent wild throw to 1st which went past first to the fence. Chris Perry then singled, and Dylan Kipp drove both Teter and Perry in with a double. McLeroy also followed with a double, driving in Kipp. After a flyout, and McLeroy's steal of third, Grant Shambley was hit by a pitch, and Poythress walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored McLeroy, Bryce Palmer's sacrifice fly scored Shambley, and Brady's grounder to short was booted to score Poythress. GH (7-0) after 3 innings.
GH was able to end the game via the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth. Adam Boghosian led off with a bloop single to right, and scored on Poythress' home run. A walk to Palmer, Bryce stealing second, and scoring on Will Yoder's single to left, ended the game. GH (10-0) after 5 innings.
Poythress (1-0) gets the win, and hits a home run and (3 RBIs), McLeroy goes (2-2) with 3 stolen bases.
