Dave Cockroft Update
Dave Cockroft (2003) had a fine outing in the opener for Lenoir Community College. Here's the story from the Kinston Free Press:

Stony Wine era begins with sweep of Maryland team
February 18,2006
Bryan C. Hanks
Sports Editor

While Mother Nature gave a preview of how great this spring could be, the Lenoir Community College baseball team also provided a possible advance look at its 2006 season on Friday.

On a beautiful, warm and sun-splashed day at Lancers Field, LCC used blow-out and come-from-behind victories to top visiting Montgomery-Germantown (Md.), 11-5 and 7-4.

It was a successful debut for LCC coach Stony Wine, who took over the Lancers baseball program from Lind Hartsell in the offseason. But like his highly successful but perfectionist predecessor, Wine said there were many things his Lancers needed to improve to be the kind of team he envisions it can be.

“I’m pleased but you have to realize that we have a lot of work to do,” Wine said. “We started the season on a good note, but fundamentally, our defense left us at times. The hitting was there, but it looks like we need to concentrate some more on ground balls defensively.”

The Lancers (2-0) jumped to an 11-1 lead in the first five innings of the opener before reliever Matt Holloman surrendered four runs (two earned) in the sixth inning to the Gryphons (0-2). Sophomore southpaw Dave Cockroft was dominant in the first game, striking out 12 Gryphons while only giving up two hits an earned run and two walks in five innings.

Wine said the book on Cockroft is to get to him early because he settles down as the game wears on. That was evident in Friday’s game as the crafty lefty gave up his only run and walk on 28 pitches in the first inning before 13 of the final 14 batters he faced. He was also responsible for 14 of the 15 outs while he was in the game as he retired two Gryphons on groundouts to the mound.

“He was confident in what he was doing out there today,” Wine said of Cockroft. “After that first inning when he threw 28 pitches, he calmed down and started throwing it.”

Former South Lenoir star Paul Novicki closed the first game by retiring all three Gryphons he faced in the opener.

The Lancers trailed 4-1 in the nightcap before closing the game with a run in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth. Freshman right-hander Trevor Smith went four-plus innings, scattering nine hits and giving up four runs (three earned) to pick up the win in the second game.

Former Greene Central star Jordy Davis came into the game in the sixth with no outs and two Gryphons on base. He forced a flyout, then gave a walk to load the bases before striking out the final two batters of the inning. Former Spring Creek standout Michael Oglesby earned his first save of the season with a one-hit seventh inning that included two strikeouts.

The Lancers scored their 11 runs on nine hits in the first game, led by a 3-for-3, one-RBI day from leadoff batter Chad Dawkins. Freshman first baseman Airlon Vinson and sophomore outfielder J.J. House (Williamston) had two hits each in the opener, which included a two-run home run from Vinson in the third inning. Sophomore Jes Snyder was 1-for-3 with a bases-clearing double in the second inning to finish with three RBIs.

In the second game, LCC scored its seven runs on eight hits and was led by Vinson’s 2-for-3 at the plate and freshman third baseman Jon Jon Mira (Jacksonville) with his 2-for-3, RBI performance.

It was also a great debut for Vinson, who was teased by Wine at Thursday’s practice.

“I told (Vinson) at the end of practice (Thursday) that there were no guaranteed starting positions and his face just fell,” Wine said with a laugh. “When I came in today, I told him, ‘I was just kidding with you.’ ”

The practical joke made Vinson so nervous that he couldn’t eat breakfast on Friday, although he already bought a biscuit at Burger King.

“I tried to eat but couldn’t eat,” Vinson said. “I’ve had a daggone biscuit with me all day. I was too nervous to eat anything.”

Vinson also showed an incredibly humble side of himself when he was asked about his home run in the opening game.

“I reckon the wind was blowing a little bit when I hit that one out,” Vinson said. “I get a few base hits here and there but I don’t know what got into me on that one.”

LCC returns to action in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today against Florence-Darlington (S.C.) Tech at Lancers Field.
