NYS Division I Final: Greece Athena/Odyssey 3, Mamoronek 2, (Utica Aud).

UTICA — Sophomore winger J.T. Stenglein, Mr. Big Goal himself, produced yet again at clutch time for the unbeaten Thunder. His eighth playoff goal provided a 3-2 lead with only 4:12 remaining.

 

When the buzzer sounded, the celebration began.

Gloves, sticks and helmets were hurled into the air from the Memorial Auditorium ice and the Thunder celebrated a rare feat of utter perfection in New York State Public High School Athletic Association hockey.

Athena/Odyssey became just the second team to run the table, going 27-0 en route to the first hockey championship for the combined program. Albany Academy in 1990 was the other. Mamaroneck finished 26-3-1

Stenglein scored three goals just 3:55 into the first period and led Greece Athena/Odyssey to a 5-2 victory over West Genesee in the semfinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association hockey tournament this evening. The Thunder went up 3-0 after one period and then had a 5-1 lead after two. Greece Athena/Odyssey scored again in the third period before Hilton closed out the scoring with 1:30 left in the game. The Thunder (21-0) had six different goal scorers: Greg Ryan, J.T. Stenglein, Matt Lane, Eric Gunderson, Curran O'Brien and Mike McNeil. Matt Fracassi and Corey Sherman scored for Hilton. Hilton goalies Brad Delgatti stopped 13 shots, Dan Hurlimann had four saves and Tyler Kelly had one save. Parker Bonis and Andrew Simonelli split time in goal and combined for 19 saves for the Thunder. Bonis had 13 saves. more

Greece Thunder hockey wins one for coach 'Webby'
After all of 16 seconds had elapsed, Riley Bourbonnais made it clear that the Greece Athena/Odyssey Thunder would not be stopped. Greece Olympia/Arcadia did recover after the early goal by Bourbonnais started the Thunder, but the Lightning could not keep up and lost 7-3 Tuesday to a Greece Athena/Odyssey team thankful it will get its head coach back.

Pat Sofia, Riley Bourbonnais, Brandon Cheeseman and Greg Ryan scored as Athena/Odyssey (17-0) took the championship of the Liverpool Tournament. Sufferin-I led 2-0 early in the third. J.T. Stenglein had an assist and was named tournament MVP. Barker Bonus made 32 saves for the win. more

Brandon Cheeseman scored two goals as Greece Athena/Odyssey remained undefeated with a 2-0 victory over Liverpool-III in the Liverpool Tournament at the Coliseum Arena at the State Fair Grounds in Syracuse. Matt Lane assisted on both goals for the Thunder (16-0), ranked first in the state in Division I as well as the top-ranked school in the Democrat and Chronicle coaches poll. more

Sophomore J.T. Stenglein scored 7:20 into the third period to lead Greece Athena/Odyssey to a 2-1 win over Aquinas in Section V hockey at Lakeshore Ice Arena on Tuesday night. Stenglein made a backcheck to steal the puck away from an Aquinas player, made one player miss and his shot just trickled over the goal line for the go-ahead goal. Greg Ryan gave Greece (15-0-0), which is the top-ranked team in the state in Division I, a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 6:05 of the second period off an assist by Pat Sofia. Greece is also the top-ranked team in the Democrat and Chronicle coaches poll. Sean Hickey tied the game with 34 seconds left in the second period with an even-strength goal for the Little Irish (8-9-2-1), who are ranked ninth in the coaches poll. Anthony Starnino and Tyler Edwards each assisted on the goal. "We got better as the game went along and had a lot of energy in the third period," Thunder coach Dan Webb said. "We played an almost perfect period scoring the goal and then holding them off." Peter Dohr (Aquinas) and Parker Bonis (Greece) each made 25 saves. more

Stenglein had a hat trick as Greece Athena/Odyssey remained undefeated with an 8-1 win over Brockport on Thursday in Section V hockey at SUNY Brockport's Tuttle North Ice Arena. Sophomore left wing Riley Bourbonnais added one goal and four assists and senior right wing Greg Ryan scored two goals with one assist for the Thunder (14-0). Sophomore Parker Bonis, freshman Mike Rotolo and freshman Andrew Simonelli combined for 26 saves for the Thunder, ranked No. 1 in the Democrat and Chronicle large schools coaches poll and also top-ranked in New York state Division I. Brandon Cheeseman broke a 3-3 tie with 1:14 remaining in the game to lead the Thunder. Cheeseman knocked in a rebound after the original shot by Matt Lane. Irondequoit had tied the score 3-3 on a power-play goal 19 seconds earlier by Jeff Englert. The Thunder led 2-0 after two periods but Irondequoit scored twice ito begin the third to tie the score. Pat Sofia gave the Thunder a 3-2 lead midway through the third. Lane and Erik Gunderson also scored for Greece (10-0). Cam Weisbeck and Zach Ferrara also scored for Irondequoit (2-6-2). J.T Stenglien and Mike Briganti each scored to lift Greece Athena/Oddyssey (9-0). Stenglien found the net 8:52 into the first off an assist from Riley Bourbonnais. Forward Doug Clayton netted Rush-Henrietta's score on an assist from Corey Spuck and Mike Truisi 5:19 into the second period. Briganti connected in the second to give the Thunder a 2-1 advantage. Goaltender Brandon Burgess made 23 saves for the Royal Comets (4-4-2). Mike Rotolo stopped 21 shots, including two in the final minute of the game to secure the win. more
