Volunteers help build Auburn Hills' athletic field
The Auburn Hills City Council received a pleasant surprise at a recent city hall meeting to approve second phase construction on a new, multi-sport athletic field on the south end of the Civic Center Campus.
Patrick Kelly, a construction contractor, city resident and President of Makos Football, a non-profit athletic organization that will be the field's primary user, presented a zero bid for the concession building, telling the City Council that the Makos organization is grateful to the City for building the athletic field.
Construction is expected to begin in May and completed by late summer. Phase II includes parking lot and athletic field lighting at a cost of $175,000. It also includes the construction of a concession building, expected to cost approximately the same amount as the lighting.
Makos Football is bringing together a number of volunteers and donors to contribute time and materials to the construction of the concession building. The Auburn Hills City Council said it is supporting the volunteer effort by reimbursing Makos for the cost of their required performance bond, estimated at approximately $10,000.
The remaining costs associated with the building project, including goal posts, bleachers, and a press box, will be handled by Makos Football through donations. There have also been discussions regarding the possibility of a team building complete with locker rooms in a third phase of the project. Construction is expected to be substantially underway by May 1 and Makos Football plans to play its first season in what they are calling the "SHARK TANK" this Fall.

Do you have what it takes to be a MAKO?
In 2001, The Great Lakes Makos Football Club was founded and settled into the Ohio Valley Football League. This year, the club decided to pursue national recoginition and became independent. Makos football strives to provide a positive outlet to young men in our community and county. Whether a player aspires to play in College, Arena Football, or the NFL, Semi-Pro football is a means of developing talent and achieving goals.
Off the field, players are encouraged to give back to their communities. Currently, several Makos players are working to further the development of the Auburn Hills Makos, our Youth Football Club. The program is the first in Auburn Hills history and will benefit the community youth for years to come.
The Makos continue to enjoy an excellent working relationship with the Department of Parks and Recreation through our involvement in the community. The new Auburn Hills Community Center opened in May of 2006, and will provide the team with a work-out facility, gymnasium, and meeting rooms. Location of the Makos new home field is still being negotiated and details should be announced by the end of Spring.

If you don't make a total commitment to whatever you're doing, then you start looking to bail out the first time the boat starts leaking. It's tough enough getting that boat to shore with everybody rowing, let alone when a guy stands up and starts putting his (life) jacket on. - Lou Holtz
