Lightning Exit MSU's Tournament of Champions with Extra Innings Loss to Detroit Metro Stars

 The Lightning jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but were unable to hold on, losing to the Detroit Metro Stars 18U.  A single by Josh Tanksley (Brother Rice) started the inning off.  More runs came home for the Lightning when Tanksley scored on a sacrifice fly from Robert Iacobelli (Brother Rice) and Jordan Fujarski (Kettering / Albion) scored on an RBI single by Anthony Gunn (ND / Univ. Cincinnati).

After the quick strike from the Lightning, the Detroit Metro Stars responded with three runs in the first.  the Metro Stars scored on an RBI single by Ty Kiafoulis (Bro. Rice / UofM) and a two run single by Austin Harvey (Richmond HS).  The back and forth contest ended in extra innings with Chad Roskelly (MSU) hitting an RBI single in the top of the 8th inning.  The Lightning were unable to respond in the bottom of the 8th.

Outstanding pitching efforts were turned in by Joe Turnbull (Lake Orion) for the Lightning and Zack Schmidtke ( Divine Child / Madonna Univ.) and  Travis Perkola (Dakota / Lee Univ.) for the Metro Stars. 

Great Lakes Lightning 4 - Oakland Patriots 3

After five lead changes in Wednesday's opening game at Rochester Adams High School, the Great Lakes Lightning of North Oakland finally pulled out a 4-3 win over the talented Oakland Patriots.

The Lightning took the lead in the fifth inning and held on for the victory with Joe Turnbull's (Lake Orion) RBI double bringing home Travis Corbett (Kettering).  Robert Iacobelli (Brother Rice) tripled in the fourth inning driving in a runner to tie the game.  Jordan Fujarski (Kettering) plated Kevin Ketvirtis (Romeo / Siena) with a triple to put the Lightning ahead for good.  Jake Glover (O.L. Lakes) recorded the win for the Lightning while Joe Turnbull earned the save.

2014 Great Lakes Lightning

Please note that the Great Lakes Lightning will be playing in the MATBL super league for 2014. Post season eligibility includes AABC, NABF, USSSA and CABA.  In addition, the Lightning will be playing in the following tournaments:

  • Michigan State University - Great Lakes Tournament of Champions
  • University of Michigan - Best of the Great Lakes
  • University of Notre Dame - 17U National Championships
We will provide additional information regarding respective university (campus) tours in advance of the tournaments so that families may plan accordingly.

Game Changer will provide live game play by play action of the Great Lakes Lightning in 2014. All statistical data and player profile information will also be available on this web site following game day.
