Setting the pace with strong scoring on Day One, the Grady boys captured their first ever Atlanta Track Classic title by defeating several-time defending champion Carver at home at Grady Stadium.
Sophomores and first-year pole vaulters Shomari Gervin and Jawayln Brooks set the tone by going 1 and 2 in their event with prs of 11-6 for Gervin and 10-6 for Brooks to net 18 points, which by the end of the meet, proved to be the edge the Knights needed to hold off Carver by a score of 124.50 to 112.50.
Junior Jericho Smith, voted the meet's most valuable athlete for combined track and field events, won the high jump and placed third in the triple jump. Smith, who transferred this season from Douglass, is having a standout season in his first year at Grady. He also captured a silver medal in the 300 meter hurdles, an event, which earlier this season he ran a Class AAA-leading time of 39.34. Senior Juwan Scroggins, last year's triple jump champion, added 5 points in the event with his fourth place finish.
Junior Zane Coburn and freshman Bailey Roth kicked off the running events scoring on Day Two with first and second place finishes in the 1600. Roth ran a season's best 4:32.
The finals started favorably with a win by the 4x100 team of Hoderick Lowe, Rosi Stevens, Hughston Leaks and Damain Swann. After flying to a season's best time of 42.73 in the prelims, the team cruised to a 43.22 victory.
Senior Lowe, a Tuskegee University football signee, added 8 quick points as he jumped to a lead over the field in the 100 meters to finish second to Carver's Dequadis Tucker. Lowe added 4 more points with his 5th place finish in the 200 meters.
Hughston Leaks, in only his first meet in the 110 hurdles, finished 4th. The junior added another 4th place finish in the 300 hurdles.
Coburn, voted the meet's most valuable runner, raced to a 1:56.6 victory in a photo finish with North Atlanta's Malik Epps. They have Class AAA's fastest and 2nd fastest times this year. Coburn broke the old school record of 1:57 two weeks ago at the Stephenson Invitational.
Roth closed out the team's scoring with a victory in the 3200 in a finish of 10:06.
Thursday, March 24
Junior Jericho Smith won the 300 hurdles in 39.34 in a quad meet against Dunwoody, St. Pius and Chamblee to eclipse an old school record set by Aaron Killingsworth two years ago.
The time is the fastest so far this season in Class AAA and the third fastest overall in Georgia. As of Mar. 24, Smith's time was the 43rd fastest in the nation.
