Coburn Caps Brilliant Career Taking 1600 and 800 State Titles

Senior Zane Coburn capped his Grady track career in emphatic fashion propelling the team to a 9th place Class AAA state finish with impressive victories in the 1600 and 800 meters.

On the first day of the meet, Coburn jumped to a lead and ran away from the field to capture both the state 1600 meter title and the meet's best performance honor clocking a 4:15.29. His time lowered his pr by 2 seconds and primed the crowd in anticipation of his defense of his 800 meter state title from a year ago.

On the meet's final day, he once again didn't disappoint. Since departing the baseball diamond for the track, Coburn has brought to the track the toughness and guttiness of the bullpen closer he once was.

His strategy for closing out opponents in the 800 has been pretty straightforward. Attack them early and like a fast ball up and away, dare them to do something about it. For two years, no competitor in Georgia, whom he faced directly, was able to do so as he went undefeated in the event over his two-year career in it.

This year's final was special as he sought to land a top 10 all-time Georgia mark in the event and to challenge the AAA state record. Blistering the first lap in 53.89, Coburn gave his best effort at his goals. With no one to push him and only the clock to beat, he captured the title in 1:52.87.

The most accomplished runner in Grady history, setting the school's gold standards in both the 800 and 1600, Coburn will be a tough act to top and his records could stand for a few generations.

Next year, he carries his hard-working and determined act to the University of Georgia where he should make an immediate impact on the Bulldogs squad.

The state meet also capped the career of senior Gray Quiller who captured a 7th place finish in  the 100 meters. Quiller leaves Grady as the No. 2 all-time 100 meter sprinter with a pr of 10.88. He was the region 5AAA champion in the 100.

Giving promise for next season's team, junior Jawayln Brooks continued his ascent up the pole vault ranks, finishing 6th in the state meet with  a vault of 13 feet. Also the region and city champion, Brooks had a pr this season of 13-6.

Sophomore Felton Gray competed in the high jump in the state meet and senior Hughston Leaks competed in the 110 hurdles. The 4x100 team of Quiller, Rosi Stevens, George Griffin and Leaks also competed in the state meet.

Next year's squad will be in a rebuilding mode with the graduation of 10 seniors. Promising returnees include Brooks, freshmen Jamond Glass, Hassan Jordan, Miles Jordan, and Ronquavious Cullins, sophomores Sonny Romeo, Gray, Eric Neal and Tony Wilborn, juniors Shomari Gervin and Corwin Rich.
