Gator Track Finishes Strong at Kinkaid Relays
Alex Barrett named 8th Grade Boys Outstanding Athlete
The 8th grade boys, led by high-point winner Alex Barrett, placed 3rd in this week’s Kinkaid Relays behind The Village School and Kinkaid. There were 14 teams at the meet, which included St. John’s, St. Michael, River Oaks Baptist, 1st Baptist, 2nd Baptist, Trafton and others.
Alex won the 1600 meters in what is believed to be a school record of 5:17.83 seconds. He finished 3rd in the 800, 3rd in the 200m hurdles and 4th in the triple jump. The boy’s 4 x 100m relay team took second to The Village School in a photo-finish, lowering their season best by 1.5 seconds to 50.42. Jalen Dixon and John Suttles placed high in both the 100m and 200m events. Jalen also placed 3rd in the triple jump. Anthony Le, competing with an injured knee, placed 3rd in the shot put.
Kinkaid, the only school to use a manual entry system, believed that 2 schools—Grace School and Grece School—were two different schools. After much discussion, they agreed they were one and the same and finally decided to award us our proper medals and ribbons. Another casualty of the Kinkaid entry system was Christian Ott, who was omitted from one of his events.
Other notable achievements: Lamar Bretches and Jordan Zeal ran exceptionally well and set personal records in their events. Carl Mundt, battling a bad back, made his first appearance of the season and performed very well. Jaela DeJean placed 2nd in both the 100m and 200m. Kaitlin Handel placed 3rd in the triple jump and is improving steadily.
There were many more great efforts. Once the official results are posted I will send them along to everyone. I must mention one specifically. Jason Long, competing with flu-like symptoms, ran a strong 3rd leg in the 4 x 100m relay. Jason knew this was a big race and did not want to let his teammates down. He had to miss his two other events, but his effort in the relay was truly outstanding.
Big thanks go out to Coach Gholson for all his efforts on behalf of the kids—he is a great asset to the program.
Thank you to all the parents who attended. The kids love you being there and cheering on their behalf.

7th Grade Boys’ Track Finishes 2nd
Despite being without 2 key members of their team, the remaining 7 boys on the 7th grade team put on another great performance on Saturday at the Greater Houston Athletic Conference track meet.
Chance Griffin, John Suttles and Jason Long swept both the 100 and 200 meter races. Earlier they teamed up with Michael McColloch to demolish the field in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Alex Barrett and Max Brown set season bests in the 800 and 1200 meter races. Nicholas Vrakas continued his steady performances in the both the shot and discus as well. All seven of these boys did a fantastic job in trying to win the team championship against other schools with many more athletes.
In other action, Nicholle Cromwell finished 2nd in the high jump, Spencer Coats took 3rd and 6th in the 400 and 200 meter races and teamed with Conner Walker, Tate Grealish and Marshall Cornett in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Morgan McHale continued her steady improvement with a fine showing in the 200 meter dash. There were many other good performances.
Finally, thanks to all the parents and staff who supported us throughout the year. It makes everything a lot easier with great support. Thanks to Coach Ferretti and Amber Bretches for volunteering their time at the long jump on Saturday.
And a big thank you to Coach Gholson who did a great job this year with the distance runners and providing great help to all the athletes at practice and meets!
