  Meet our coach

Coach Ann Germain's comprehensive approach to training emphasizes development of the mental, physical, psychological and technical aspects of the game. The coach places a particular emphasis on development of individual and team tactical awareness.

Coach Ann brings to the Sparks a background on the international level as a player, coach and leader. Ann played on the first U.S. Women's National Team from 1984-86 and is among the pioneers on putting women's soccer on the international stage. She was a teammate of such notables as April Heinrichs, current coach of the U.S. national team, and Michelle Akers. Ann played with the U.S. National Team in an early version of the women's World Cup in 1985 and 1986 held in Italy. That team traveled the world competing in tournaments and bringing international exposure to the women's game.

Coach Ann played on the "East" U.S. team at the Olympic Sports Festival, from which the national team was largely selected. Ann was captain of the East team in 1985 and 1986.

Ann attended the University of Virginia on a field hockey and lacrosse scholarship. UVA did not have an intercollegiate soccer team then. She was captain and most valuable player on the university's field hockey and lacrosse teams her junior and senior years.

Ann played on the Virginia's state women's team from 1980-92 and was captain of the state team for several years. She also played for Soccer Kicks and the Wildfire under-30 women's teams, which went on to win three national open titles. At age 33 she finally moved up to the over-30 age group and played for the Annandale TBA team, which also won 3 or 4 national titles. Ann was an MVP in these national women's tournaments.

Even though she was incredibly active and successful on the national and world stage as a player, Ann got her hand into coaching soccer early. She took on coaching the U-9 McLean Hornets club team while still in high school and guided them through the U-19 level. She also coached another McLean team for several years before turning her attention to Annandale Boys & Girls Club teams.

Ann has coached the Sparks to the State Cup semi-finals the last three years. She coaches the Sparks at no cost. The last two years Sparks have been stopped in the semi-finals by the team that went on to become that national runner-up in that age group.

Ann is former assistant soccer coach at Langley High School. As a player at Langley, Ann earned all-District, all-Met and tournament MVP honors.
