Shelbyville puts unbeaten streak on line

Class 4A, No. 6-ranked Shelbyville faces its toughest test of the season today in the Columbus East Invitational.

The Golden Bears, 22-0 and the only undefeated team left in the state, take on 2011 sectional champion Franklin (20-6), Harrison (West Lafayette) (13-5) and No. 4 Columbus East (21-2) in pool play.

If Shelbyville wins its pool, it would likely meet No. 3 Avon (22-4) in a potential semistate preview.

The Orioles battle Jasper (17-7), Columbus North (9-17) and Bedford North Lawrence (13-11) in the other pool.

With the state tournament draw to be announced Monday – one that will let the Golden Bears and Olympians know just when they could potentially meet in the sectional – today’s showdown piques the interest of Shelbyville coach Lyndsey Hensler, who would really like to take a crack at last year’s state runner-up Avon.

“That’s my driving force to beat Columbus East,” said Hensler.

“I’m almost 100 percent sure they will win their pool. I think (Avon) is a team we can really learn from.”

For Columbus East, which has lost only to 3A No. 7 Muncie Central and Avon this season, today’s tournament is an opportunity to shake off last year’s sectional championship loss to the Golden Bears.

When possible, players from both teams have been visibly present at the other team’s matches this season.

“Our girls have watched them play,” admitted Hensler. “I’ve gotten lots of scouting reports on them.”

In the larger scheme of the state tournament, today’s tourney match, which will only be a best-of-three format, doesn’t mean much.

However, it is the chance to send a statement to the other team before they arrive in Bloomington for the sectional tournament in two weeks.

“I don’t want to let all our cards out,” said Hensler. “I want to see what we can do on our own. I want to see what’s effective and then see what we can change.”

With a tournament win, Shelbyville could vault at least two spots in the state rankings.

And its undefeated streak would still be intact. Hensler knows carrying a perfect record into the sectional may not be in the team’s best interest.

“Nobody wants to lose,” said Hensler when asked if a loss would be a good thing right now. “Being undefeated does give an opponent one more thing to push them. A team not only could beat us... but also beat an undefeated team.”

The only undefeated team left.

Sectional play begins on Oct. 16 with sectional champions matches on Oct. 20 at 64 sites across four classifications. One-match regionals are on Oct. 23. The semistate round follows on Oct. 27.

3A No. 1 Tigers defeat 4A No. 8 Golden Bears

Beating one of the best volleyball programs in the state never comes easy.

After showing signs of life late in a game one loss to Class 3A, No. 1 ranked Yorktown Saturday afternoon in William L. Garrett Gymnasium, Class 4A, No. 8 ranked Shelbyville rolled through games two and three to move within one win of capturing the program's first Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.

The Tigers weren't phased by the losses, or the partisan crowd mostly wearing black. Yorktown's success is measured in postseason wins and hardware shaped like the state of Indiana. Winning its fourth-straight HHC title turns out to just be a nice bonus.

So when Yorktown trailed 19-18 late in game four, head coach Stephanie Bloom called timeout. Senior Nikki Box, who had nine kills and 14 digs in the 2011 state-championship win over Chatard, nailed back-to-back spikes to swing the momentum.

*
Box delivered two more kills in the run for a game-four win, and got help from Courtney Chowning, Rachel Hines and Karlie Acree to complete the comeback in game five for a 26-24, 18-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-11 victory and finish off the Tigers' fourth-straight perfect HHC season.

Yorktown has won 30 straight conference matches dating back to a 2008 loss to Delta.

Shelbyville, who has never won an HHC volleyball title, was left dejected in its regular-season finale.

"Box is a good player," said Shelbyville coach Lyndsey Hensler. "We weren't able to shut her down and she took advantage of it. That was one of the keys."

The Golden Bears (25-4) have lost four of their last seven matches, although three came to state-ranked opponents. Injuries have been a problem. Libero Hailey Knecht missed most of the Columbus East Invitational and two-time Shelby County Player of the Year Phebe Drake injured her right ankle early in the loss to Martinsville.

Knecht has since returned to the lineup, and Drake barely favored the sore ankle on Saturday.

No team ever led by more than three points in game one as both teams tried to find some early rhythm. Following a Shelbyville timeout, a quick set kill by Carson Malapit extended Yorktown's lead to 24-21.

A.J. Lux, Shelbyville's powerful middle hitter, scorched a spike to cut into the lead. Malapit then hit long followed by Lux blocking Box to tie the score.

Malapit set up a fourth game-point situation for the Tigers with her third kill, and Chowning stuffed a long serve receive pass by Knecht for the win.

Yorktown (29-3) carried the momentum into game two where it built a 10-7 lead.

The next three points came from Lux on a dynamic spike and a pair of blocks as the sophomore took control at the net. That sparked the Golden Bears, who scored 14 of the next 19 points.

Lux finished off the game with a soft touch kill and two more blocks.

Shelbyville trailed just twice in game three as Lux and Taylor Pierce each had a pair of blocks at the net. The Golden Bears' defense left Yorktown frustrated which resulted in several hitting errors.

A long serving attempt by Yorktown libero Harlie Holding set up game point. The win came when a Yorktown player was called for being in the net.

The two teams traded points throughout game four before Box took over. The senior's game-changing kills came off Taylor Zwickl sets. Zwickl was the setter on last year's state title team.

Box was responsible for four of Yorktown's final six points that set up a game-five showdown.

The Tigers built a 6-3 lead on a tip kill by Chowning, a hitting error from Drake an a kill by Acree.

Yorktown maintained the three-point lead through 11-8.

Malapit made it 12-8 when she ended a long rally. Chelsey Skipton missed a spike attempt to give Yorktown a five-point advantage.

A service error by Box cut the lead to 13-9. Drake followed with a kill off the Yorktown block.

Lux was then called for touching the net which left both her and Hensler frustrated.

Drake staved off match point with another spike off the block attempt, but Lux's serve never cleared the net giving Yorktown the conference championship.

"Yorktown didn't know where the ball was coming from," said Hensler of her team's success in games two and three. "In game four and game five, we definitely stopped swinging. When you do that, you're going to struggle."

Box finished with a match-high 20 kills. Chowning had 13 while Acree, Malapit and Hines combined for 18.

Drake led Shelbyville with 16 kills. Lux had 13 kills and 11 blocks. Skipton added 11 kills and 19 digs.

Yorktown won the junior varsity match, 25-21, 25-9.

Sydney Smith led the Golden Bears with 12 assists and 11 digs.

The road through the six-team volleyball sectional tournament at Bloomington South is a familiar one for Shelbyville: Win a match Thursday. Win a match Saturday morning. Eat. Rest. Hydrate. And play for a sectional title Saturday night.

The formula resulted in a sectional championship in 2011.

The Golden Bears (25-4) open Class 4A, Sectional 14 against the host Panthers (16-6) at 6 p.m. Thursday. In the second semifinal, East Central (24-7) takes on Columbus North (9-24).

The winners return for an 11 a.m. semifinal match Saturday. Columbus East (28-4), ranked third, follows against Bloomington North (13-7).

The sectional championship is at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Golden Bears, who started 22-0, finished the season losing four of their last seven matches. Injuries and tough competition slowed Shelbyville’s roll over the final two weeks of the season.

“The last two matches we’ve played at a high level. It just hasn’t panned out into wins,” said Shelbyville coach Lyndsey Hensler, referring to five-game losses to Class 4A, No. 14 Martinsville and 3A No. 1 Yorktown.

Prevailing thought has eighth-ranked Shelbyville and the Olympians of Columbus East meeting in the championship. The Golden Bears have plenty of work to do before that can occur.

“We’re going to go hard in practice this week to find that fire and drive,” Hensler said.

A win Thursday sets up a 2011 sectional semifinal rematch with East Central or a second meeting this season with Columbus North. Shelbyville swept the Trojans at the Columbus North Sectional last season and did the same to the Bull Dogs this season.

Hensler hopes the final part of Shelbyville’s schedule has it prepared for another extended postseason run.

“Looking back at it, the schedule was not to our advantage,” Hensler said. “There is nothing we could do about it. The teams that have been good in the past we’re not good this year. There were a lot of games where we just walked in and were just playing around. We didn’t have to work for it. So I’m glad here at the end, we’ve had to work for (wins). It will make us better.”

Ritter Sectional

Class 2A, Sectional 43 features No. 11-ranked Ritter.

Triton Central (7-17), which was swept by the Raiders on Oct. 9, may get a rematch in Saturday’s semifinals. First up for the Tigers are the Washington Continentals at 6 p.m. Thursday. Triton Central dropped a total of 11 points in its 2011 sectional quarterfinal match with the Indianapolis school.

“They are a program in rebuilding mode based on what we saw last year and their results this year,” said Triton Central coach Ray Basile. “They’re having their struggles. We can relate to that.”

Triton Central went 4-25 last season including its win over the Continentals. Basile took over the program and challenged a large group of seniors to strive to be better. Now the Tigers can double their 2011 win total on Thursday and have possession of the Shelby County Tournament championship trophy as a reward for their hard work.

Basile hopes to have middle hitter Jordan Ingle back in the lineup this week. The senior, who was named the county tournament’s Most Valuable Player, missed the Union County Invitational on Saturday due to illness. While the Tigers finished 2-2 without Ingle, Basile knows the Tigers will need her if they get to Saturday’s semifinal match.

“She is one of our dominant leaders on the floor,” Basile said. “We need to get her back on the floor.”

Ritter (22-9) hosts Scecina (11-15) in the second quarterfinal Thursday.

The second semifinal Saturday features Crispus Attucks and Metropolitan.

Lutheran Sectional

The host school is the favorite in Class A, Sectional 59.

Lutheran (20-9), ranked second, opens the eight-team sectional in the second quarterfinal match tonight against Southwestern (6-17).

In the opener at 6 p.m., Waldron (15-11) battles Mid-Hoosier Conference rival Edinburgh (26-7). The two played a long five-game match with Edinburgh prevailing on Sept. 24.

“Edinburgh has two really tough hitters, so we will work on our blocking a lot this week,” said Waldron coach Lissa Talbert.

The Mohawks will count on its frontline size to counter the hitting ability of Edinburgh’s Abby Bryant and Jennifer Stinson.

Waldron finished the regular season losing four of its last five matches, but it’s not a concern for Talbert, who believes the team has made the adjustment of playing without senior middle hitter Brooke Settles, who is lost for the season with an ankle injury.

“These girls really want to beat Edinburgh,” Talbert said. “They know how close they came to beating them the last time. Now, they want to win.”

The winners Tuesday return to Lutheran at 11 a.m. Saturday.

In quarterfinal matches Thursday, Morristown (4-21) takes on Baptist Academy at 6 p.m. Irvington Prep tangles with Greenwood Christian in the second match. The winners meet in the second semifinal Saturday.

BLOOMINGTON — Class 4A, No. 8 ranked Shelbyville got the workout it wanted and the victory it needed to move one step closer to defending its sectional championship.

The Golden Bears defeated Bloomington South, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 in the first sectional quarterfinal match Thursday on the Panthers' home court.

Columbus North upset East Central in the second quarterfinal, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-20. That sets up a rematch between the Golden Bears (25-6) and the Bull Dogs (10-24). Columbus North was swept in its season opener by Shelbyville, 25-10, 25-15, 25-20.

Phebe Drake and Chelsey Skipton each had 11 kills for Shelbyville as it solidly opened defense of its 2011 sectional championship.

"We had a really slow start," said Shelbyville coach Lyndsey Hensler. "We had trouble reading their offense. Their whole goal was to get it quick to the setter and they did a good job at it. Once we figured it out and got our block up, it all started to work for us."

First-year Bloomington South coach Eugene Kim worried about Shelbyville's experience being a factor in the sectional opener. His Panthers ran out to an 8-3 advantage in game one forcing Hensler to call the first timeout. From there, the Golden Bears took over.

Shelbyville scored three straight points on a pair of kills from Drake and a service ace by Jacqueline Lux. After the Panthers extended the lead to 9-6, Shelbyville scored the next four points and trailed just once the rest of the match.

"When your down in the first game and you rally and win it, that's exciting to see," said Hensler.

Skipton was the biggest offensive weapon in game one with six kills.

Game two started as game one did with Bloomington South getting out to an early lead. The Panthers kept battling to hold onto the advantage and eventually built a 20-18 lead.

A.J. Lux delivered a strong spike that found the floor off the Bloomington South block and Kim called timeout.

Three straight errors by the Panthers returned the Golden Bears to the lead, 22-20. After Amy Zwissler delivered one of her match-high 12 kills, Brie Blume served into the net to make it 23-21. Kim called timeout again knowing the outcome of game two would swing the match.

Zwissler followed with another kill and then an ace and the game was tied. This time, Hensler called timeout.

"It was all about who was going to get to their spot first and put the ball down," said Hensler. "It was a momentum swinger to close the game out."

On the next rally, Forney was called for touching the net. On game point, it was Forney who hit long to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead.

The win seemed to take all the pressure off the Golden Bears, who jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game three and never let the lead slip below three points the rest of the way.

Once the Golden Bears and Bull Dogs finish today, No. 3 Columbus East (28-4) takes on Bloomington North (14-8) for a spot in the sectional championship game.

Fast start not enough in Shelbyville's bid to repeat as sectional champions

BLOOMINGTON — Playing for the right to host the regional championship match, Class 4A, No. 3-ranked Columbus East overpowered No. 8 Shelbyville in the sectional championship match at Bloomington South.

The defending sectional-champion Golden Bears played its best volleyball of the season in the opening game. A late rally by the Olympians, though, set the stage for what would happen in the next three games.

Columbus East setter Faith Myers kept pushing her outside hitters, Erin Mack and Micayla Speidel, for more kills and the pair delivered time and time again.

Mack's power and Speidel's relentlessness proved too much for a Shelbyville squad seeking a second-straight sectional title.

"Mack is probably the best right-side hitter I've ever seen," said Shelbyville coach Lyndsey Hensler. "She really turned it on tonight. She wanted the ball and by God they gave it to her."

Mack finished with a match-high 18 kills. Speidel had 13 and senior middle hitter Sara Bean added 11 to help the Olympians (30-4) avenge last year's loss in the sectional championship. Columbus East had won the previous four sectional titles.

Shelbyville (27-5) was the better team early with strong hitting and even better blocking that had the Olympians on their heels.

A pair of blocks and a tip kill from A.J. Lux made it 3-0 in Shelbyville's favor. The lead grew to 8-3 before Columbus East called timeout. Little changed as Olivia Moore and Taylor Pierce each had blocks in the Golden Bears' run to a 17-6 advantage.

"Game one was probably the best game we've had all season," said Hensler. "We had fire. We had tenacity. And we had fun. We were having fun out there. Columbus East struggled in the beginning to get its momentum, and once they did we struggled."

The Olympians cut the lead from 11 points down to just three when Mack delivered a kill that closed out a 7-2 run.

Chelsey Skipton rescued her team with hard-hitting spike that found the floor to set up game point. Mack staved off the first attempt with her sixth kill, but the junior followed it with a serve into the net and the Golden Bears had game one.

After recording four blocks and several more deflections in game one, Shelbyville lost control of the net in game two.

The two teams traded points up to 10-10 before Columbus East broke free following a timeout.

Lux was called for touching the net on back-to-back rallies and Bean followed with a kill to make it 13-10. The Olympians weren't done. Two more hitting errors by the Golden Bears forced Hensler to call timeout.

Carly Robertson ended the next rally and Columbus East was up 16-10. Shelbyville never cut into the gap after that and a service error brought an end to game two.

Shelbyville got out to the lead in the pivotal game three but back-to-back kills by Bean and Speidel tied it at 13s. That started a run of five straight points and the Olympians never trailed again.

A pair of Skipton hits and a Mack spike attempt that went too long cut the lead to 22-21, but Mack came right back with a touch shot to end the comeback bid.

Skipton smashed a shot through the block attempt to make it 23-22.

Mack then overpowered the defense twice in a row to end it.

"We struggle with blocking," said Hensler. "We were trying to get in the best position we possibly could to dig up as much as we could. I thought we did it well. We just didn't do it great."

With all the pressure now on the Golden Bears, the Olympians loosened up and started rolling. Two kills by Mack and a dump set for a point by Myers, who finished with 47 assists, opened up a 10-6 advantage.

Shelbyville scored the next two points, but that was as close as it would get.

A pair of blocks by Bean at the net started the celebration and made it 20-11. Shelbyville sensed the end was near.

Bean delivered one of her best spike attempts of the match to push it to 22-12. Speidel followed with another point from the outside, and Lux hit long to set up match point.

Phebe Drake, the two-time Shelby County Player of the Year, followed with one of her biggest swings of the match to stave off the first match point. Speidel then mi*** a set attempt by Myers and it was 24-14.

Drake had one more big swing left in her career and she delivered to delay match point a third time.

Setter Jacqueline Lux finished off the next point, but it was too little too late.

"At the very end, it was coming back together but if we could have had maybe five more points it would have helped," said Hensler.

Speidel, who was blocked twice before on the final rally, nailed match point and the Olympians earned the opportunity to host Center Grove Tuesday night in the regional.

Drake led the Golden Bears with 15 kills. Skipton and A.J. Lux each had 12. Jacqueline Lux racked up 39 assists. Hailey Knecht had a match-high 30 digs.

Shelbyville reached the championship match with a business-like 25-14, 25-15, 25-6 performance in the semifinals against Columbus North. Skipton had 14 kills and six digs. Drake finished with 12 kills and 11 digs.

Columbus East eliminated Bloomington North, 25-13, 25-14, 25-11.
