GLENDORA PONY/COLT BASEBALL: GPC NEWS LINE

Tip Line

When you play infield at Henderson field, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.  The infield is actually much different thean a High School infield or a Pony Infield.  The edge of the grass between first and second and second and third is cut for 80' bases, while the outside edge of the infield is cut to MLB standards.  So if you play on the back edge of a pony game, you are likely too deep to throw many people out at 80' bases.  If you play on the grass for a High School game, you are likely 10 closer than you should be.  It can be decieving, but there is more infield dirt at Henderson field than at Angel stadium..

BASEBALL RULES

The games have started off with a bang, and there have been some questions regarding some calls made by umpires.  We follow rules set forth by our own by-laws, then Pony Baseball rules, and finally Major League baseball rules.  Our local rules attempt to limit injuries while preparing the players for High School play.  The non contact rules mirror those of High School baseball rules.  Don't forget, this is purely the call of the umpire in the game.  I have included a segment of the High School ruling regarding contact for review.  If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

Runner slides or avoids: A runner is out if the defense is playing on him and (1) he does not slide legally, causing illegal contact or thus altering the actions of a fielder in the act of making a play; or (2) on a force play does not slide in a direct line between the bases. Penalty: Interference. Ball is dead. Both the runner and the batter-runner are out.

Note 1: A runner on a force play may slide away from the fielder to avoid interference.

Note 2:
The runner establishes his base path as a direct line between his position and the base to which he must go.

Note 3: The runner is never required to slide. If he does slide, it must be legal. If he does not slide, he must avoid interfering with the play.

Legal slide: A legal slide may be either head first or foot first. In a foot-first slide one leg and buttock must be on the ground. The runner must be able to reach the base with either a hand or a foot.

Illegal slide: The runner may not use a rolling, cross-body, pop-up, or leg thrashing slide if he makes contact or alters the play. A raised leg must be no higher than the fielder's knee when he is standing. The runner may not slide beyond the base and make contact or alter the play. The runner may not attempt to injure the fielder.

Winterball

As our season winds down, many people are asking about Winterball at Glendora Pony.  All our winterball games are played in house (at Henderson).  We usually form 5 to 6 teams, depending on the number of sign ups.  This is the only winterball program at Henderson field for the ages 13 and 14.  This is the incoming age, so in other words, if you wish to play Pony next year, you are eligible for Winterball here.  We will be sending out mailers in the next few weeks, so don't get confused with the other programs around, this is the true warm up for the pony league.
