GIRARD 2009 OPENING DAY - $1000 GRAND PRIZE RAFFLE !!!
Girard Playground is proud to enjoy the largest enrollment of kids playing sports in the Metairie area. Because of this, we are asking each child to sell a minimum of 10 - $1.00 raffle tickets for a $1000 grand prize drawing. The winners will be announced on Friday, May 1st at 8:00 P.M. at the Viking Cafe.
This will help us to make the necessary improvements to the playground. We want to make Girard enjoyable to everyone attending an event at the playground.
We also are awarding $100.00 to the Girard Athlete that sells the most tickets. Seller's name must be written on the ticket stub in order for it to count towards his/her total. This award is for one (1) individual only not per family.
Tickets and money will be collected during try-outs for each age group.
If you need more tickets, please contact one of the following booster club board members:

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: BLEACHER HARDPADS ARE COMPLETE!!!
This baseball and softball season, the bleacher area around Field 3 (by the West Esplanade parking lot) and Fields 4 + 5 (between the tots field and softball field) will have concrete hardpads and some fill added. This should GREATLY reduce the mud and puddle mess after a rainstorm.
These - and many other improvements - are funded solely by your Girard Booster Club, so please consider joining the Boosters this Baseball Season at registration. There are annual and lifetime family memberships available to fit your budget.
PLEASE JOIN THE GIRARD BOOSTER CLUB
girardboosters@yahoo.com
The Girard Booster Club is asking for your support. Children of all ages depend on your support for our sports programs to work. PLEASE JOIN THE BOOSTER CLUB. We are grand fathering previous lifetime members but if you would like to increase your contribution please feel free to do so. With the rising cost of items we have increased yearly dues to $30.00 and lifetime dues to $150.00. This is still a bargain considering it is to help improve the playground our children use for their recreation. Our focus is the children!
The Girard Playground Booster Club strives to make our sports programs what they are today. The Jefferson Parish Recreation Department supplies the playground with many things to help our programs, but there is not money in their budget for extras. We need your help both financially and with volunteered help. We will have sign up sheets at our first booster club meeting in January. We need volunteers to help in our concession stand, tournaments, jamborees and for other fund raising events.
Girard Playground needs your support and looks forward to your cooperation. It is now time to renew your membership. Please complete the bottom of this form and either mail it to Girard Playground, 5300 Irving St., Metairie, LA 70003 or hand it to a board member with your membership preference. Please make checks payable to GIRARD BOOSTER CLUB.
Consider this: JPRD does not provide a large in-house staff to run playground athletic operations. Considering Girard has over 1000 children participating in various sports throughout the year, the challenge is enormous, and without the booster club's help, would be next to impossible to achieve. Currently, a much too low percentage of playground parents provide 100% of the Booster Club support. This is very hard for those parents, not to mention what could be achieved if we had 100% participation.
Please appreciate that when you get a cool drink while watching a game, that was because someone was there to serve it. When your children's teams are practicing hitting in the batting cages, they are there because the Booster Club built and maintains them. When the kids get to slide in to 3rd base on clay (and not grass), it's because the Booster Club parent volunteers prepared the infields. The covered grandstands (with cooling fans) and many other amenities are all financed by the Boosters. So it all just does not appear magically. Every year, parents leave our playground family as their kids get older. We need new parents every year to take their place in order to provide these services. Again, please consider joining the Boosters...we hold regular meetings, stop by and join us (look for the sign on the fence). PS: Booster Club Membership Applications are available on this website under "Handouts"

Baseball Fields Workday on March 1st, 2008
Girard will have a workday to get the baseball fields and grounds ready for the season on Saturday, March 1st, 2008. Please bring your work gloves and if you have a shovel, hoe or rake, bring that as well. We will meet at 9am, most likely by the Dixie Youth concession stand on West Esplanade.
Our goal is to pick up all hazards, clean up trash, clean out drains and dugouts, and of course, work on the fields. We have 5 fields so there is plenty of work to do.

We Need Your Help!
Girard Playground has one of the largest participation counts of any playground in the JPRD system. This is fantastic, but often - with so many children - there are not enough coaches, team moms or volunteers to help out with various activities.
If you have children participating at Girard, please consider coaching. If you feel you don't have enough experience, we have a Coaches Association who can help you. It really doesn't take a whole lot, just a committment to the kids, and show them how to become young adults, while teaching them how to play a little ball. You will find it as rewarding as watching your kids play ball.
We also need Parent Sponsors for teams - "team moms" (but we'll also take "team dads"). They help our coaches, who spend many hours with the kids doing the X's and O's, with calling other parents about practice, reminding them about games, make posters, help with team parties, and generally put together the parent support for the team.
Our grounds, especially during baseball season, need a tremendous amount of attention. Holes need to be filled, dugouts need to be cleaned, fences need to be put up, things need to be painted, bases need to be cut out, etc. etc. It's hard work and not enough help is often around to do it. Also, when it rains, the infields need to be groomed so the games can be played. Come on out and get a little dirty - there's always work to be done!
If you want to help, but just don't have the time or ability, you can still support us by joining the Girard Booster Club. Your participation helps support various projects to help the kids have a nicer place to play ball.
We'll post under "Volunteering" when we need volunteers here throughout the year. If you want to help out, or have any questions, feel free to email us at this address:

April 2007 Booster Club General Meeting Notes
The Girard Booster Club recently held its' April Meeting on the 24th. Items of note are as follows:
* Coach Harold acknowledged the four Girard Soccer allstar teams - the U12 Boys and U12 Girls, who won their JPRD-East Championships - and the U10 Boys and U15 Team, which were JPRD-East runnerups.
* As of today, 895 children have signed up for our baseball and softball programs
* The Girard Baseball and Softball Jamboree will be held at the beginning of June. We will need many volunteers to make this a success. Charlotte Shelley will be the contact person for all Team Moms in order to coordinate the work schedules. The Adult Home Run Derby will be Friday night and the Kid's Home Run Derbys on Sunday afternoon and evening.
* Field 5 (Baseball, Softball for young children) players will get some much needed relief this year from the sun! By the end of this week, the new dugouts will be installed. This has been a priority for the Booster Club.
* Booster Club Membership Drive - we now have over 100 members, but need many more to finance future improvements. We will have a membership drive at future ballgames, and will also have contests in each league to see which team can get the highest membership percentage - with the reward being a team pizza party.
* Coach Derek reported that our Girard Coaches Association Baseball meeting and Crawfish Boil were a success and a good time was had by all. He also mentioned that we need much more parental volunteerism when it comes to the concession stands.
* Coaches Gary and Travis reported that doing uniform sales by scheduled team times has been working very well. Pants, belts, and socks are also now available for sale. Team times continue this week from 5pm to 7.30pm.
* Coach Jimmy Smith said the championship signs for the 2006 10U Boys JPRD-East Championships and the Girls Softball championship will be delivered on Friday. Also arriving will be the new field signs, which will be immediately installed.
* The Scorer's Booth / Concession Stand for the Softball field will have the slab poured this week. Once the foundation is complete, the other work should follow quickly. This job should be finished by the end of May.
* The website is getting a steadily increasing number of visitors

Girard Booster Club Monthly Meeting February 27th ITEMS
The Girard Booster Club recently held it's monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, February 27th, 2007 at 7.30pm at the Girard Gym.
Topics on the agenda included:
* new Girls Softball concession stand/scoring booth - work will begin this Friday on the foundation.
* the new alarm system in the freshly painted West Esplanade concession stand
* the results of our past two workdays - there is still much work to do on the fields and workdays will continue for the next four weeks every Saturday until all the fields are ready to go
* the upcoming baseball season - registration will begin March 26th. We expect another large turnout and many demands. The Booster Club will have a membership drive during registration. Also, the lights will be repaired and repositioned by a JPRD crew this week. The kids will appreciate not having anymore dark spots on the fields!
* membership drive - we need more participation - many good ideas were presented, but ultimately everyone needs to get the word out. Booster Club membership is an inexpensive way to really help the playground out.
* fundraising - we will have an new push for the sell-a-seat campaign for the Dixie Youth baseball stands, possible a sell-a-brick campaign for the area around the new girls concession stand/scorer's booth, and as always, we could always stand to sell more fence signs.
* Girard Coaches Association - we will have a C.A. meeting soon to discuss the upcoming baseball season, the framework and the rules. Membership is not mandatory for the C.A., but all who plan to coach this year are expected to attend. Look for details soon.
THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME OUT ON OUR WORKDAY LAST SATURDAY AND PLEASE COME OUT AGAIN FOR THE NEXT FEW SATURDAYS TO TO HELP GET ALL THE BASEBALL FIELDS READY FOR PLAY
The next Booster Club Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 27th, 2007, in Room 1 (right when you walk in the door to your left) in the Girard Gym. We'd like to have our largest crowd for the next meeting, there are many important topics to discuss, so please join us.
Saturday, February 24
Second Workday Coming Up Feb 24th
The second playground workday of the year will be on Saturday, February 24th, 2007 at 9.00a. Bring your gloves - the focus of the work will be to prepare the baseball fields by spreading some dirt, but we will also be completing the cleaning of the front concession stand along West Esplanade.
Tuesday, January 30
January 2007 Booster Club General Meeting
Our January meeting was held on Tuesday, January 30th at 7.30pm at the Girard Gym. We had good attendance, and everyone enjoyed some king cake afterwards.
Items on the agenda discussed included the upcoming construction of a new Girl's Softball Field concession stand/scorer's booth (to replace the one destroyed by a fire set by vandals) and the reports from all of the respective board members. If all goes well, the girl's stand will be ready to go by softball season.
As always, we are looking for new members to be a part of the ongoing improvements to our playground. Your help will provide a lasting legacy for your children and those to come in the future. Please join us at our February Booster Club Meeting - as for every monthly meeting - on the last Tuesday of the month.

Girard Concession Stand Workday - THANKS!
Thanks for all the parents who came out to help on a cold and rainy day, cleaning up and fixing the vandalized front concession stand. Given the giant mess, we may need to have another day to finish the job at the concession stand.
However, if not, there will be other workdays coming soon as there is still much work to do. Watch out for dates!
The Girard Coaches Association is a forum for people who will be coaching our children. The GCA forges friendships among the coaches, and also has seminars to teach the latest techniques and rules. The GCA is an excellent way for parents of the younger set to get involved and be the next generation of coaches.
If you want to coach, and are not too sure of yourself, please make use of the GCA. They'll help in any way to get you going. All you need to do is ask.
The Girard Coaches Association will be meeting this spring before the baseball season. Watch this site for dates and times.
THE GCA CRAWFISH BOIL WAS A GREAT SUCCESS! EVERYONE HAD A GOOD TIME AND THE WEATHER WAS FANTASTIC, AND THE MUDBUGS WERE EXCELLENT. HOPEFULLY NEXT YEAR THIS WILL BE EVEN BIGGER EVENT. HOWEVER, IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN THE COACHES ASSOCIATION (CONTACT COACH DEREK). OUR MEETING WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AND STRESSED THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF COACHING YOUTH BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL, AND GIRARD PLAYGROUND'S PHILOSOPHY OF "KIDS FIRST".
ALSO, MANY THANKS TO JERRY PETERS, WHO GRACIOUSLY PROVIDED THE ICE COLD BEER TO HELP WASH DOWN THE SPICY CRITTERS!
The Girard Vikings Coaches Association will be having its 1st meeting of the year on Sunday, April 22nd at 1:00. This meeting is mandatory for all baseball and softball coaches. Following the meeting, at 3:00 all association members are invited to our
"Kick-off to Baseball and Softball Crawfish Boil"
You do not have to be a coach to join. During the different sport seasons, we will have meetings, coaching clinics and such things as crawfish boils, fish fries, etc. The main goal for the association is having all coaches understand that every child matters, teaching sportsmanship and providing more knowledge of the games by having coachïng clinics and guest speakers. The charge for joining the association is $50. Upon joining, you will receive a Girard Vikings Coaches Association shirt and a ticket for the Crawfish Boil. If you would like to join, download the handout referenced below, fill out and turn in to Coach Derek DeLatte. If you have any questions, give Derek a call 432-5220. Bring a glove, we will be playing softball and cabbage ball.
For those who have already joined and have not gotten your shirt, you will receive your shirt at the meeting.
Don't forget the meeting is mandatory for all coaches. You do not have to join to attend this first meeting.
Note: Please try to turn in your application early, to ensure we get the right amount of crawfish, but late signups are still very welcome
Thursday, March 1
Girard Coaches Association Baseball Meeting
Please watch the GCA news site, for information on the upcoming coaches association baseball meeting. Attendance for all prospective coaches will be mandatory, but membership in the GCA is not required.
However, we strongly encourage everyone who coaches at Girard to join us. Not only are technical and competitive issues discussed, but it is also a good way for everyone to make new friends, and enjoy some special events throughout the year.
This baseball meeting will try to identify prospective coaches BEFORE evaluations begin and to make sure that enough coaches are there for the children this season. Also, rules, sportsmanship, competitive issues and scheduling will be discussed.

"Your Brain on Baseball" by David Brooks (NY Times)
(Coach Derek's GCA Meeting Handout)
March 18, 2007
Op-Ed Columnist
Your Brain on Baseball
By DAVID BROOKS
Vero Beach, Fla.
It’s spring training fielding practice, and Jeff Kent, the Dodgers second baseman, is covering first. A coach rolls the ball out toward the mound. The pitcher scrambles to pick up the ball. The catcher yells out which base he should throw to. Kent runs over and catches the ball at first.
Jeff Kent is 39 years old and has been playing professionally for 17 years. He’s probably been doing this same drill since he was 10 years old, because the practice drills the Little Leaguers do are basically the same drills the major leaguers do. Why is Jeff Kent, after all these years, still learning to cover first?
Because the institution of baseball understands how to make the most of the human brain.
One of the core messages of brain research is that most mental activity happens in the automatic or unconscious region of the brain. The unconscious mind is not a swamp of repressed memories and childhood traumas, the way Freud imagined. It’s a set of mental activities that the brain has relegated beyond awareness for efficiency’s sake, so the conscious mind can focus on other things. In his book, “Strangers to Ourselves,” Timothy Wilson of the University of Virginia notes that the brain can absorb about 11 million pieces of information a second, of which it can process about 40 consciously. The unconscious brain handles the rest.
The automatic mind generally takes care of things like muscle control. But it also does more ethereal things. It recognizes patterns and construes situations, searching for danger, opportunities or the unexpected. It also shoves certain memories, thoughts, anxieties and emotions up into consciousness.
Baseball is one of those activities that are performed mostly by the automatic mind. Professional baseball players have phenomenal automatic brains.
As Jeff Hawkins points out in his book “On Intelligence,” it is nearly impossible to design a computer with a robotic arm that can catch a ball. The calculations the computer has to make are too complicated to accomplish in time. Baseball players not only can do that with ease, they can hit a split-finger fastball besides.
Over the decades, the institution of baseball has figured out how to instruct the unconscious mind, to make it better at what it does. As we know the automatic brain only by the behavior it produces, so we can instruct it only by forcing it to repeat certain actions. Jeff Kent is practicing covering first after all these years because the patterns of the automatic brain have to be constantly and repetitively reinforced.
But baseball has accomplished another, more important feat. It has developed a series of habits and standards of behavior to keep the conscious mind from interfering with the automatic mind.
Baseball is one of those activities in which the harder you try, the worse you do. The more a pitcher aims the ball, the wilder he becomes. The more a batter tenses, the slower and more tentative his muscles become.
Over the generations, baseball people have developed an infinity of tics and habits to distract and sedate the conscious mind. Managers encourage a preternaturally calm way of being — especially after failure. In the game I happened to see here on Tuesday, Detroit Tigers pitcher Nate Robertson threw poorly, but strutted off the mound as if he’d just slain Achilles. Second baseman Kevin Hooper waved pathetically at a third struck fastball, but walked back to the dugout wearing an expression of utter nonchalance.
This sort of body language helps players remain steady amid humiliation, so they’ll do better next time.
Believe me, the people involved in the sport have no theory of the human mind, but under the pressure of competition, they’ve come up with a set of practices that embody a few key truths.
First, habits and etiquette shape the brain. Or as Timothy Wilson puts it, “One of the most enduring lessons of social psychology is that behavior change often precedes changes in attitudes and feelings.”
And second, there is a certain kind of practical wisdom that is not taught but is imparted through experience. It consists of a sensitivity to the contours of how a situation may evolve, which cannot be put into words.
Baseball players are like storm-tossed sailors falling and rising with the slumps and hot streaks that emanate from inaccessible parts of themselves. The rest of us rationalists use statistics to try to understand the patterns of what they do.
Now you have the chance to support Girard Playground and be able to see it whenever you want!

GIRARD'S NEW SIGN UNVEILED!
Last week, Girard Playground's main sign on West Esplanade Avenue - damaged by Hurricane Katrina - was replaced. The new sign, features a manual message board and our website address, and will replace the temporary signs we have been using for announcements to the public.

Fields 3 + 4 Batting Cages Repaired
Girard Playground deeply thanks Kenny Lorio for fixing the pipes for the batting cages by Fields 3 & 4. Many of the ends of the pipes were broken off, and Kenny spent a day rethreading the pipes and put them up.
Wednesday, February 28
Front Concession Stand ALSO now Secure!
Our main concession stand - now freshly painted “Girard” Royal Blue - also now has a brand new security and surveillance system. Much work has been done over the last few months to repair damage caused by vandals/criminals who had repeatedly broken in.
This new system will ensure it does not happen again, and hopefully the stand will be open soon to provide the kids an opportunity to get drinks and snacks during baseball season. There still is some work to be done.
Girard Playground would like to specially thank Hans Caronia, owner of BP Enterprises Security Systems, for making this happen.
If you have any security needs, or just want to tell Hans thank you for his support of Girard Playground, please drop him a line at 504-887-9226.
Viking Cafe Fish Fry Returns Friday Night, June 1st!
The popular Viking Cafe Fish Fry returns on Friday night, June 1st, on one of the most popular events at Girard Playground all year - the Adult Home Run Derby on the adjacent Dixie Youth baseball field.
Make it an evening of food and laughs as we watch our "big boys" slug it out!
YOU BET! If you're ready to go out to eat on Friday night, look no further than our own Viking Cafe at Girard. On Baseball Fridays adjacent to the West Esplanade concession stand, restaurant quality hot food is being served. Dinners include Fresh Fried Fish, Crispy Chicken Strips, and Jambalaya are a few of the offerings.
Even if your children are not scheduled to play ball on Fridays, come on out, enjoy a great meal and socialize, while taking in the ballgames. Leagues that play next to the Cafe are 11/12 Dixie Youth American and 7/8 American baseball.

V-Cafe to feature Papa G's Po-boys and Muffulettas on Friday, June 15th!!!
The Viking Café will be back this Friday with host, PAPA G’s Deli coming out of retirement to serve Muffalattas and Roast Beef Po-Boys. So don’t eat before you come to the exciting playoff games scheduled that night.
This may be the last time you will be able to get a Po-Boy from PAPA G’s Deli. The café will also be serving the newly improved taster and larger hamburger, chicken tenders and French fries and much more. So come out and enjoy an evening at the playground.
Thank you for your support.

Basketball Concessions Schedule
For 4 team leagues where the gym concession stand will be opened, the general schedule is as follows:
The Home Team on the schedule (team on the right, wearing blue uniforms) is responsible for providing someone to work the concession stand for the other game in the league your child is NOT participating in. Contact your coach or Team Mom for the days you are assigned.
For other leagues with more than 4 teams, contract you coach or league director to find times your team has duty.
You now have the ability to purchase hundreds of various and personalized styles of Girard logo sportswear and accessories via the Girard Vikings Team Stores, sponsored by eteamz and Prepsports.
With these online stores, you can buy any item - at any time of the year - and design your own apparel with the Girard logo. This includes shirts, sweatshirts, bags, headwear, stadium blankets, etc. Items can be personalized (Dad, Mom, Grandparent, etc.), by color (hot pink, camo, etc.), even put your child's name and number on the back.
While this store is sponsored by eteamz (the website host), it is NOT the official source of Girard Vikings apparel. The Booster Club sells official apparel (uniforms) during the appropriate seasons, and it also sells specific team items for our various allstar teams. Please support our Booster Club offerings when available, and use the team stores for items you need quickly and/or not available directly from Girard.
NOTE: If you do business with the eteamz Prepsports website team store, any issues must be handled directly with them, and you must register for that site seperately. The Girard Booster Club does not have any relationship with Prepsports.

Boosters "score" on Baseball and Softball Field Improvements
The Girard Dixie Youth baseball diamond - already one of the finest in the area, with our covered seating with cooling fans - is getting some more improvements on the visitors side of the field. Hard pads for bleachers and a new sidewalks on both the DY field will save shoes on those muddy days, and will elevate the bleachers slightly. Muddy areas were also elevated and resodded.
Field 3 (adjacent to the DY field) will also have a sidewalk behind the spectator area running down the 1st base line next to the parking lot, and hard pads will also be put down there as well.
Also, the new Scorer's Booth/Concession Stand on the Softball diamond is nearing completion. The area has been landscaped and resodded. This will make getting a soda or seeds more convenient, and will also allow Girard to host girls softball tournaments.
These improvements are another example of YOUR Booster Club dues at work to improve YOUR playground. Watch for more to come!
