SUB-DISTRICT TOURNAMENT

In the First Round game on Thursday, July 10 against Lakeshore,  the Indians jumped out to a 1 run lead in the 1st inning, but after that, Girard's pitching shut them down the rest of the game along with some great defense, including a nice catch by left fielder Kaitlyn Seidel.  In the top of the 6th, Brooke Petkovich started a rally with an infield single, then Sarah and Savanah Macaluso each walked to load the bases for Cameron Angelo.   Cameron drove the ball to left field to bring in two runs, Robin Ledet walked to load the bases again, and Emily Bierman hit a shot to the first baseman to end the inning.  Rachel Ledet finished off the Indians by striking out the the final batter to leave the tying run on third base, ending the game by the score of 2-1!

In the Second Round game against Cleary, the girls fell behind early 4-0 in the first inning.  In the third inning, still trailing by a 4-0 score Brooke started off another rally with a single, then Sarah Macaluso walked followed by a hit by Savanah. Walks to Cameron, Robyn, Emily, and Rachel I, and hits by Sarah U, Rachel L, and Sam Dares gave us a 7-4 lead with no looking back.  Four more runs in the fourth by Brianna, Makayla, Brooke, and Sarah Macaluso made it 11-5.  In the 5th inning, we scored four more runs to make the final score 15-5 with one more game to go.  Emily B, Rachel I, Sarah U, Brooke P, and Savanah M each reached base three times in the game, aided by another solid pitching performance by Robyn and Rachel Ledet .

In the final game of the Sub-District against Harahan, the Lady Vikings jumped out to a 8 run lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back enroute to a 13-5 win.

The Lady Vikings will now advance to The Final Four at the JPRD Softball Complex starting Friday night, July 18th at 6 PM.

EAST BANK FINAL FOUR TOURNAMENT
The Pintos had a great year, but fell to Lakeshore in the Championship Game, 11-0.  The Lady Vikings had some great hitting in the game from the Macaluso twins (Sarah and Savanah), and also from Sarah Uzee with a double.   Congratulations again to a great team - the 9-10 East Bank Runner-ups -  Girard Lady Vikings.

9/10 GIRARD LADY VIKINGS ALLSTARS ARE 2007 JPRD-East SOFTBALL CHAMPIONS!
Soft07=9-10AllstarsChamps

Introducing the 9/10 GIRARD LADY VIKINGS ALLSTARS:

Catherine Marziale, Rachel Incardona, Ali Lange, Emily Gillis, Allison Davidson, Brandelyn Rauch. Newcomers this year include Sarah Uzee, Madison Camet, Kaylee Madron, Emily Bierman, Shelby Comberrel, Meghan Stemke, and Lexi Ruello.

Head Coach: Joey Lange
Assistant Coaches: Meg Lorio, Rodney Incardona, and Lauren Bordes. Special Assistant Sam Lange (when not playing for Eastbank 14 All-Stars)

After falling into the loser’s bracket following a 5-4 loss to host Lakeshore, the Lady Vikings regrouped and stormed back with 4 wins in 26 hours to claim the Eastbank 9/10 championship, on Saturday, July 21.

The girls started their comeback with a 5-0 shutout of Miley on Friday night. Emily Gillis pitched all six innings, striking out 5. She got great defensive help from the second baseman, Allison Davidson who started 2 double plays!!!

Saturday morning began with a rematch with Lakeshore. The earlier loss by only one run gave the girls confidence that they could compete and defeat Lakeshore. The pitching featured Catherine Marziale versus Katie Brignac. The Lady Vikings got a run in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI groundout by Ali Lange, driving in Brandelyn Rauch, who singled to start the inning. This start certainly increased the Lady Vikings confidence! Marziale held the Indians scoreless until the fourth when they scored twice to lead 2-1. The Lady Vikes tied it up in the bottom of the 5th with a bases loaded walk by Emily Gillis driving in Marziale. In the top of the 6th, Lakeshore struck for two run son a 2 run inside the park homerun by Brignac. The next batter tripled to left field but was tagged out by the catcher Lange as she tried to score!

Although down 4-2 going into their final at bat, the Lady Vikes would rally! After a groundout, Maddie Camet started things off with a walk. Kaylee Madron and Brandelyn Rauch also walked to load the bases with one out. After Lange walked to drive in Camet and cut the lead to 4-3, Lakeshore pulled the tiring Brignac in favor of a relief pitcher, Bonnie Gibbons. After a pop out to the shortstop for the 2nd out, Marziale hit a game winning 2 RBI double to the right center wall driving in Madron and Rauch for the thrilling 5-4 victory!!!

Next up for the Lady Vikes was the challenge of defeating Pontiff twice on Saturday evening. In the 5 p.m. game, Emily Gillis once again came up big! In a 9-4 Girard victory, she pitched all six innings despite having to help get her mom to the emergency room earlier in the afternoon. The good news came shortly before game time that her mom was ok. Emily then went out and helped the Lady Vikes in a must win situation. She was assisted by great defensive plays from Brandelyn Rauch at third base, Emily Bierman in left center, Maddie Camet in right center, right fielder Rachel Incardona with a throw to nail the runner, and Allison Davidson starting another double play!!! The Lady Vikings’ hitters blew this game open with 7 runs in the 3rd inning, after 2 outs. Big hits were provided by Lange (RBI double), Marziale (RBI single), and Incardona (2 RBI single).

Heading into the 7 p.m. finale, Marziale was back on the mound and in total command. In a 12-2 victory, Marziale did not let in a run until the 5th, while striking out 9 batters! The Lady Vikes’ offense continued to roll as all batters reached base at least once!!!!! Leadoff hitter Rauch singles twice and drove in 3! Davidson tripled, scored, and had an RBI! Bierman doubled and drove in 2 runs! Sarah Uzee hit a shot to the left field wall! Lexi Ruello scored twice, and Madron reached base all 3 times scoring once! Great defensive plays were made by Camet in left center on a fly ball (with 2 Pontiff runners on base) and Shelby Comberrel at shortstop with perfect plays on 2 ground balls and 2 infield pop ups! From right field, the charging Incardona threw out the batter/runner at first base! IT WAS A TOTAL TEAM EFFORT!

From July 5th through the championship, the Lady Vikes were a hard-working and fun bunch to coach. I could not have asked for better. We practiced and played hard, but we also had a great deal of fun. Thanks to my team for your hustle, but mostly for your smiles, laughs, and friendliness! Thanks to my coaches- Rodney, Meg, and Lauren. It was a lot of hard work, but such a pleasure working together. And also thanks to all the parents for your assistance, support, and trust. You all have a lot to be proud of because your children are great ballplayers and great kids!!!!!

Thanks,
Joey Lange

Our first district game was Wed. July 11th, 8:00 p.m. vs. Harahan at Bright Playground. Victory in the opener 12-0! Catherine Marziale fires a complete game 1-hitter. Allison Davidson inside the park homer - triple - 3RBI's, Lexi Ruello 2 RBI double.

Thursday, July 12th, 6p.m.: GIRARD LADY VIKINGS over Delta, 18-0.

Friday, July 13th, 8 p.m.: GIRARD LADY VIKINGS over Bright, 10-0. The Lady Vikings are undefeated and still have not been scored on in the district round.

Games Postponed Due to Rain (will be made up on Sunday)

SATURDAY, MAY 26, 2007

The opening game on Saturday, May 26 turned into a nail-biter as the Dodgers held on for a 7-6 victory over the Mets. With a 7-3 lead heading into the top of the fourth inning, the Dodgers (5-0-1) had to hold off a rally by the Mets (2-4). Abigail, Allison, and Ashley got things started with a walk and two base hits. They each scored to bring the Mets within one run, but Emily pitched out of the jam for the Dodgers to preserve the win. For the game, Emily recorded EVERY out by strikeout- 12 K’s!!! More importantly, she did not let a few walks and hit batters bother her; she kept her cool and got back on track. Great job! Hitting star for the Dodgers was Emma who crushed a bases- loaded double. For the Mets, the big hit was provided by Kelly with a bases-loaded TRIPLE!

Game 2 was forfeited by the Nationals for lack of players. However Coach Darren got help from a couple of Mets, and the game was played for fun. The Orioles (3-2-1) got solid pitching from Ali, Sam, Andrea, and Lilly in a game that ended 2-2. The Nationals (2-4) pitchers, Abigail and Shelby, also did a fine job. Shelby also had a WEBGEM on the mound as she caught a hot smash for the out and no doubt, saved the life of the slow-moving umpire behind her!! Thanks, Shelby!

In Game 3, the Tigers forfeited to the Cardinals, again because of lack of players. The Oriole coaches and players were a tremendous help in teaming up with the 3 Tiger players to give the Cardinals a competitive game. Thanks again to all of you for the help. The Cardinals (3-3) got great pitching from Kelly and Rachel for a 7-3 win. Catherine provided the WEBGEM with a great catch as shortstop to end the game. The big hit of the game was from Tiger first baseman/pitcher Casey who crushed a 3-run HOMERUN to the right field fence!!!! Way to keep swinging the bat, Casey!

I want to thank my daughter, Sam, for umpiring the final game. It was her first time out there, and she did great. Thanks also to the coaches- Pete, Chris, Rodney, Mike, and Dean- for making her feel so comfortable out there. You guys have a great perspective as to what an intramural league is all about! We all want to compete hard and win, but the most important things are to teach each girl on the team and to make the game FUN! The league will continue to grow because of girls having a great time with their teammates and coaches!

Thanks again,
Joey Lange

WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, 2007
Games Postponed Due to Rain (may be made up at a later date)

SATURDAY, MAY 17, 2007

On a beautiful May Saturday, the 9-year olds took the mound at Dougie Blakemore Memorial Field. The inaugural 9-year old pitch day was a great success. I am happy to hear that some of the coaches want to unofficially try this again at a later date with the entire infield. Great idea, that is what intramural season is all about.

In Game One, the Cardinals rallied for 4 runs in the fourth to win over the Nationals 5-4. The Cards got a big 3-run triple from Catherine for the win! The rally got started when Margie drew a walk, Emily had a smash hit to left field, and Victoria drew a walk . Rachel got hit by the pitch (took one for the team), leading to Catherine’s clutch hit. The Cards (2-3) got great pitching from Rachel and Kelly, who has not allowed a run in 2 innings this year. The Nationals (2-3) continue to get great plays from Shelby, who had a WEB GEM at shortstop and also hit a RBI (Run Batted In) Double. Hitting also came from Maddie and Alyssa, but also from 9-year olds Abigail and Danielle. Danielle, along with Natalie, pitched a great game!

In Game Two, the Dodgers pounded 10 hits but the Orioles rallied for a run in the bottom of the fourth, for an 8-8 tie. This game had hitting, impressive pitching, and fabulous defensive WEB GEMS!! The Dodgers (4-0-1) got a fantastic play by LF Ana who threw to third base for a fine out that preserved the tie game. What a play with the game on the line!!! The hitting for the Dodgers was led by Emily with a single and 2 RBI’s, Jessica with a 2 RBI triple, leadoff hitter Kaylee with 2 runs scored and a RBI single, and Aimee and Christina who helped start the three-run fourth inning with a leadoff walk and single. The pitching was led by starter Kaylee and relief pitcher Ashley, who both did a fantastic job for their first time pitching in a game.

The Orioles (2-2-1) were led by the strong four innings of pitcher Sarah, and the clutch hitting of Kaitlyn. The whole Oriole team chipped in good hitting and defense. Andrea drew two walks, scored 2 runs, and had a fantastic slide into home!!! Those batting pants look great, Andrea! Also helping the offense was Lindsey who scored 2 runs, Sam with an RBI single, and Danielle with a walk and run scored. The big hit was provided by Kaitlyn who had a bases-loaded double and drew a walk to bring in the tying run.

In the final game, the Tigers got great pitching from Brianna and Sara in a 10-3 victory over the Mets. The Tiger offense was powered by Shelby with a bases-loaded, 3 RBI double. Emily knocked in 3 runs with 2 singles, and Lexi also knocked in 2 runs with one hit. Defensive WEB GEMS were provided by Catherine at third base and Amy in left field, who threw out a runner at third. The Mets continue to get great defense by Allison who made a couple of great plays at shortstop. She drew two walks and scored 2 runs as the leadoff hitter. Makayla had a RBI on a walk, Ashley singled, and Jaclyn had a walk and a run scored to help the Mets.

Once again, parents were a great help at the concession stand. Thanks so much! Also, I want to thank Meg, our umpire. She had to call a player out for throwing the bat. It was a tough call, but she was not afraid to make it. In her final at bat, the player did not throw the bat. Meg’s concern for the player and the safety of others exemplifies what is good about our league. I hope that all coaches and parents take a moment to thank Meg for her contributions to the playground. Thanks again! Hope to see you at the next game!!!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2007

On Wednesday May 16,2007, there was plenty of great pitching in the Lady Vikings 9-10 Softball league. In the opener, The Nationals rallied for an exciting 4-3 victory over the Tigers. Alyssa , Maddie, and Shelby combined to hold the powerful Tiger offense in check. The Nationals (2-2) also got great defense from Shelby at 3rd Base and Natalie at 1stBase. The hitting was led by Abigail with a single and Danielle with an RBI single and run scored. For the Tigers (1-3), Emily pitched an outstanding game in her first time on the mound. The Tiger offense was led by Lexi and Brianna with RBI singles , and Brandelyn with a single and run scored. Casey had the WEB GEM on defense, as she caught a line drive at 3rd and tagged the runner for a super double play.

In Game 2, which was shortened to 3 innings by rain , the Orioles (2-2) blanked the Mets, 5-0. Ali pitched another shutout for the O’s, and also had a single and run scored. She got a boost from her catcher, Sam, who had a single that drove in 2 runs. Lindsey also helped out with an RBI single. The Mets (2-2) were led by the WEB GEMS on defense by Allison at SS and Tori at pitcher. Emily had a nice single for the Mets offense.

In the finale, the Dodgers remained undefeated behind the strong pitching of Emily and Mallory. The two pitchers combined for ten strikeouts in the 4-0 victory over the Cardinals. The Dodgers (4-0) were led on offense by Kaylie with an RBI single , Emily with an RBI single, and Mallory with a single and 2 RBI’s. The Cards (1-3) got strong pitching again from Catherine, and excellent catching by Mandy. Mandy also had a beautiful bunt for a hit.

I am very proud of all of the girls. The games are very competitive and played with great enthusiasm. I especially like to see, and hear, the cheering from the dugouts, as the girls encourage their teammates. I believe the Cardinals are the loudest and most spirited

team so far. We’ll see if anyone can top them. As for teamwork, I want to compliment Emily and Savannah of the Tigers. With the bases loaded, pitcher Emily fielded a ball in front of the plate and calmly flipped it to her catcher, Savannah, who got the force out at home to end the inning. Great teamwork in a pressure situation !

Please remember to try and wear blue shorts with your jersey. Saturday is 9 yr. old pitch day. The weather should be perfect so be sure to drag your entire family to the game. Also, thanks to our concession volunteers for all their help.

See you at the game,

Joey Lange

SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2007

The softball action was fast and furious at Dougie Blakemore Memorial Field on Saturday, May 12th. All three games were competitive in the girls 9-10 softball league, with lots of big hits and runs scored.

In the opener, the Cardinals (1-2), got their first win of the season with a 5-4 victory over the Orioles (1-2). Megan led the way for the Cardinals with 2 hits and 2 runs scored. She also played a great game as the catcher, tagging out a runner trying to score. Catherine pitched 2 scoreless innings to get the win for the Cardinals, striking out the side in the 5th. The Orioles offense was led by Sara with an RBI single and double, Ali with a double, and Kaitlyn with an RBI single. Kaitlyn also had the WEB GEM (great defensive play) of the game by throwing out the batter going to first base from rightfield.

In game 2, the Dodgers (3-0) stayed undefeated with an 8-7 victory over the Tigers (1-2). The game was full of great hitting and clutch pitching by both teams. The Dodgers recieved strong pitching by Emily and Malory, and excellent hitting by Ashley, Jessica, and Emma. Ashley bunted for a hit and scored twice. Jessica and Emma each had a hit and run scored, and both continue to crush the ball. For the Tigers, two great defensive plays stood out. Brianna made a diving WEB GEM catch in rightfield, and Casey threw out a batter at first from rightfield. On offense, leading hitters were Brandelyn and Savannah who both had a hit and scored twice. Also, Casey crushed a triple to the rightfield fence.

In the final game of the day, the Mets took an 8-5 victory over the Nationals. The Mets (2-1) were led on offense by big hitters Makayla, single and double, and Kelly, who also had a single and a double. Ashley and Allison each scored twice, and Brooke had two hits and a run scored. Allison pitched 2 very strong innings to start the game, and Ashley finished the game with some great fastballs to hold off the Nationals rally. The Nationals (1-2) got great hitting from Natalie with 2 singles, 2 RBI's and a run scored, and Alyassa with a double and scored.

The action on Saturday was exciting, especially when the girls swung the bats. I strongly encourage parents and coaches to remind the players that they should not look for the walk. Be ready to hit. Also, I want to remind the players and coaches that you cannot look for all of the calls to go your way. Balls and strikes will balance out over the course of a game. Also, our umpires do a fantastic job and there should never be any questioning of their effort and integrity. You may not get the call you wanted, but the call was probably right. Remember players and coaches can "get run" by an umpire. That means if the umpire feels the coach or player has gone too far, they can be ejected. All of our umpires are completely supported by the league supervisors and the playground personnel. Play the game, compete, and have fun. Let the umpire call the game.

Sincerely, Your League Director....
