VIKINGS END SEASON AS LOUISIANA DIXIE YOUTH STATE RUNNER-UPS AND UNDEFEATED SOUTH REGIONAL CHAMPIONS
DIXIE YOUTH MAJORS - 2008 LOUISIANA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (Alexandria)
Girard opened up the Louisiana State Championship Series vs the Regional champion, West Monore East. The LSCS was held at the first class Johnny Downs Sports Complex in Alexandria on Friday and Saturday, July 25-26. The format was a best of three series. UPDATE: WEST MONROE EAST GOES ON TO WIN THE DIXIE YOUTH WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP
GAME 1 WEST MONROE EAST over GIRARD, 13-1
Game 1 was a tough game for our Vikings, who faced a great pitching performance and a hitting barrage from the WM squad.
GAME 2 WEST MONROE EAST over GIRARD, 5-4
Our Vikings rebounded in Game 2 to play WM tough. After spotting the WM team an early 3-0 lead, the Vikings came back on the top of the 6th to tie the game at 4-4, and still threatening for more with runners on base. A call at the plate on a steal ended the inning, and WM sealed the victory in the botttom of the 6th with a walkoff single.
In the last 2 years, GIRARD has won the State Championship in 2007 and were the State Runner-ups this year. Over 60 allstar teams began this journey a few weeks ago, and at the LSCS there we only two left standing - our Girard Vikings and West Monroe East. A proud accomplishment for our team.
Our season has now officially ended, and we congratulate the West Monroe team and wish them luck in the Dixie Youth World Series in Georgia and hope they bring it back to Louisiana.
But most of all we cannot thank enough: our coaching staff, our playground supervisors, our parents, and finally our players, for a super effort this year and for representing our playground. GO VIKINGS!!!
DIXIE YOUTH MAJORS - SOUTH REGIONAL (Ponchatoula)
The South Regional festivities begain on Thursday, Jun 17, at 6pm, with the Teams' Banquet at the Ponchatoula Lions Hall, where the Regional participating players and coaches were honored.
Play began on Friday, with our Vikings topping a tough Morgan City team by the score of 7-4 at Ponchatoula Recreation Park on a sunny day at 2.30pm. Girard came out of the box fast, leading at the end of 1 by 4-1. Morgan City fought back to cut the lead to 1, then the Vikings got some insurance on a 2 run Home Run in the bottom of the 5th. The Vikings' fans were able to follow the game at home and across the country courtesy of the Morgan City radio station KBZE-FM on the Internet.
On Saturday at 5pm in a 2nd Round game, Girard defeated Tioga by the score of 7-5. The Vikings took an early 4-0 lead, then fell behind by 1, coming back in the 5th inning to seal the victory.
With the tournament half over, on sweltering Sunday evening, the Vikings met up with the only other undefeated team in the tournament - West Monroe North. While not a true "driver's seat game", the winner here is alone with the advantage of no losses. In the tilt, the Vikings steadily built on a lead - led by a 1st inning 2 run Home Run - coupled with a great pitching performance, to get by the WM squad. The Vikings has WM scoreless until the last inning, when they scored two late runs in the top of the 6th, ending the game by a score of 8-2 for Girard.
In Monday's game, the Vikings continued their winning ways, overcoming a determined Gonzales National team and their pitcher. For 3 innings, the teams matched run for run. Gonzales then increased their lead by 1 in each of the next 2 innings. Girard fought back and finally broke it open, scoring 5 in the bottom of the 5th, capped off by a 2 run Home Run. With the score 10-7, the defense closed out the game for the Vikings in the top of the 6th.
Girard advanced to the South Regional Championship on Tuesday vs West Monroe North, who defeated Tioga to win the loser's bracket. The Vikings opened a 3-0 lead in the 2nd, and never looked back, on the backs of the strong pitching and defense, and on a 5th inning 3 run Home Run, with Girard clinching the title with a 8-0 victory!
DIXIE YOUTH MAJORS - DISTRICT II TOURNAMENT
The Dixie Youth Majors District II Tournament opened play @ Jefferson Playground, with the Vikings facing off in the First Round vs the Little Farms Pirates on Tuesday, June 8th. The Pirates opened up a 1-0 lead early on, but the Vikings broke it open in the 3rd with an 8 run inning and a Grand Slam HR. The Vikings defense locked down after spotting the early run and the offense added 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th, ending the game with a score of 11-1.
On Wednesday evening @ Jefferson in the Winner's Bracket Second Round, the Vikings fell to the Miley Cardinals, who steadily built their lead throughout the game behind their starting hurler. However, in the last inning, the Vikings mounted a charge but ultimately lost by the score of 11-6.
With the loss, Girard falls into the Runner-up Bracket, the winner of which will advance to the South Regional Tournament in Ponchatoula. The Vikings ventured to Pontiff on Thursday to meet the Lakeshore Indians in an elimination game, and started out with their version of Gorilla Ball, slamming 3 homers. Lakeshore stayed in the game however to the end, with the Vikings prevailing 12-9.
Continuing in the 2nd Place Qualifier bracket, Girard met the loser of the District Championship Game, the Pontiff Blue Devils at 7pm on Saturday @ Jefferson, by a score of 10-0. The Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, and consistently built on it throughout the game. The strong combination of Viking pitching and defense resulted in the shutout victory.
The District II tournament ended in long and dramatic fashion on Sunday with the Consolation Bracket Championship game between Girard and the Delta Eagles. With the game tied at 2-2 after 3 innings, Delta went up by 2 runs by the end of the 4th. With the Vikings still down by two runs at 5-3 in the top of the 6th - and with two outs and down to their last strike - the Vikings rallied to tie the game and send it into extra innings. After a scoreless 7th inning, Girard scored 4 in the top of the 8th and held the Eagles to win the game 9-5, and advance to the South Regionals as the District II Runner-up.
Girard congratulates the Miley Cardinals on their District II Championship, and good luck in the North Regional in Many.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs captured the 13-14 year old intramural league championship. The Bulldogs came out of the losers bracket with wins over the Syracuse Orangemen 11-10, Ole Miss Rebels 7-3, LSU Tigers 3-2 (in an exciting nine inning game), and defeating the ULL Cajuns twice on championship night 5-1 and 10-6.

Elimination Game Wed JUN 18, 2008 #3GIRARD 9 - #4 Bright3
Also in an elimination game,Cory Barnes pitched a 4 inning one-hitter against the Bright Falcons enabling the Vikings to move forward into Thursday's schedule. Girard plays Little Farms on Thursday at 6 PM. The winner of LF-Girardgame comes back at 8 PM to play Miley for a chance to move into championship night on Friday.
Round 2 Mon JUN 16, 2008 #2 Miley4 - #3 GIRARD 2
While the Vikings were able to score their leadoff hitter, Daniel Lahare, to open the game, the Cardinals tripled their output and lead 3-1 after one full inning. After the first stanza Miley had enough runs for the evening.Girard only scored one more time, that one run coming in the top of the 4th inning. Tim O'Quinn went the distance for the Cardinals, pitching all five innings. He allowed two runs on three scattered hits. He did allow seven walks and his teammates committed three errors, but the Cardinals were able to overcome the 13 base runners and limit the Vikings to just two scores. The Cardinals scored their 3 runs in the first inning on three walks and two base hits. The big hit came from O'Quinn who drove in two runs with a double. The Vikings three hits were provided by Daniel Martinez, Barrett Juneau and Ben Harrison. By virtue of a loss Girard falls into the losers bracket and plays again on Wednesday. Miley remains in the winner's bracket and will play Pontiff on Tuesday.
In what was clearly the longest game of the season so far, lasting almost 3 full hours, the Vikings pulled a victory from the jaws of defeat in a game many thought would never end. It was a wild and wooly affair that saw seven different pitchers come to the mound; with 23 runs and 21 hits recorded. The game used at least a dozen new baseballs and kept spectators on the edge of their seats late into the night, long after the rest rooms had their lights go dark from the automatic timer. The Rebels had a huge 4th inning after facing good Girard pitching for the first 3 innings. In the 4th, when the Vikings finally got the 3rd out, Cleary had scored 9 runs. The lead was looking pretty good to the Rebels, that is until the bottom of the 5th, when Girard tallied 7 runs to add to the 4 they got in the fourth inning. Cory Barnes came on in relief of Colin Leroux in the 6th, and gave up an opening single and a hit batter. With 2 on and no one out, Cory bore down and got a ground ball to force the lead runner out at 3B, and two fly balls to close out the inning and the threat. The outcome of the game turned on an opening base-on-balls issued to Zac Lange in the bottom of the 6th. He was bunted to second by Barrett Juneau. With two-out, Gage Weisdorffer came through with a single to right to score the game winning run. The offensive leaders for Girard were Daniel Lahare (2 for 4); Daniel Martinez (2 for 2); and Cory Barnes (3 for 4). The Rebels had three hitters with 2 hits - Dale Smith (2 for 3); Frank Denny (2 for 4); and Ross Budenski (2 for 4).

Gm8 Tue JUN 10, 2008 Little Farms 10 - GIRARD 1
Vikings end the regular season at 9-5-1 and will be the #3 seed in the Tournament.
Gm7 Sun JUN 8, 2008 GIRARD 11 - Cleary 2
Sunday it was quite a ballgame through four full innings. Clearygot a run in the top of the first and kept the lead until the bottom of the fourth, when Girard (9-4-1) tied it up. Ross Budenski was the starting pitcher for Cleary. For 4 innings he pitched no-hit baseball. For the first 3 innings Girard had but one base runner - a walk issued to Zac Lange in the 3rd. Girard pitching was also good. Through 4 innings Daniel Martinez allowed just one run on three hits. The Vikings changed pitchers in the top of the fifth, and Colin Leroux entered. Girard gave up its second run of the game on two Viking errors. In the bottom of the fifth, the wheels came off the Rebels' wagon as they gave up 10 runs on nine base hits. Budenski surrendered the mound to Frank Denny, but that was not enough to stop the Girard base hits.Twelve batters came to the plate for the Vikings in the fifth inning. In that fifth inning Matt Calcote was two for two, with a single and a triple. Seven other Vikings also had hits in the fifth. The Rebels were unable to get another at bat as time expired before the bottom of the fifth could be reached. For Cleary, Adam Coote was two for three with a double. Henry Pittman had a single.
Gm6 Sat JUN 7, 2008 GIRARD 11 - Bright 1
At Pontiff on Saturday, Girard (8-4-1) coasted to a win behind the steady pitching of Cory Barnes. Barnes went the whole way, allowing just one run on 4 hits, as he struck out seven and walked three. The Viking defense made no errors. Bright's offense came from Ryan Roy, Tucker Herzog, Sherman Badie and Brian Bird. The Falcons scored in the bottom of the first, but could not manage to push across any runs thereafter. The Vikings continued to hit well as a team scoring their runs on 8 hits. Barrett Juneau led the way with two doubles in three trips to the plate. Daniel Lahare was also 2 for 4. The other Vikings with hits were Daniel Martinez, Barnes, Matt Calcote and Gage Weisdorffer.

Then they picked up in two runs in the fifth to tie it up. Each of the starting pitchers, Brice McDuffie for the Cardinals, and Daniel Martinez for the Vikings, gave up six runs and multiple hits, but each had to leave the mound after reaching their maximum pitch count in the fifth inning. Gm3 Tue MAY 27, 2008 GIRARD 4 - Delta 3
Girard (7-3) beganwell, getting 4 runs in the top of the first inning. Patrick Morton started for Delta and was throwing hard, striking out two Vikings, but giving five bases-on-balls before being relieved by his twin, Jordan. Jordan stopped the bleeding, allowing three scattered hits while fanning seven in the next 4 innings. In the meantime, the Eagles began climbing back, scoring one run in the first and one in the second. Then Delta scored again in the 4th, making it 4-3. A key pick-off play in the bottom of the 4th by Ben Harrison, the Viking pitcher, saved the day. The base runner had reached second base and two hitters later, after the pick-off, Josh Ansardi droppeda single in the outfield that wouldmost surely have scored the tying run from second, if not for the important pick. Harrison reached the maximum pitch limit and was relieved by Evan Chacon. Harrison is credited with the win for Girard. Delta out hit Girard 4-3, (there's that game score again). The bottom half of the Eagle line-up did the damage with Gage McGuyer, Jason Cooper (with a double), Devin Beham and Josh Ansardi, getting the base hits. GIRARD Baseball Teams travel to Laplace
Baseball Teams from Girard's 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12 American Leagues headed west to Laplace, Louisiana for the LARAYO vs GIRARD SHOWDOWN 2008. 2007 Baseball - 9/10 American Allstars Visit Tulane!
The 9/10 All-Star team visited Tulane Baseball and Coach Rick Jones. The kids had a great time, ran the bases and got to see the new state of the art playing surface that many of the college teams are going to (along with many of the Major League teams). Coach Jones spent some time with the kids and talked to them about teamwork, individual responsibility, school studies and personal character on and off the field.
Vince Granito, who lives in Girard's district, works in the athletic department at Tulane and made it possible for the kids to visit with Coach Jones. If any of you run into Vince, please thank him again for setting this up for the players.
Look for pictures of this event soon in the GIRARD PHOTO ALBUM!

JPRD EASTBANK DIXIE YOUTH PRESEASON TOURNAMENT
The GIRARD ROYALS won the tournament over the GIRARD WHITE SOX on their home field.

This was a strong showing for our Girard DY teams, as of the 12 teams participating, 3 were in the final 4 remaining teams. After raining out on Friday night, the teams played in great weather on Saturday and Sunday. Highlights featured the WHITE SOX' Evan Chacon pitching a NO-HITTER vs Miley North Carolina on Saturday evening.
DIXIE YOUTH AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAY
In the first of two DY Memorial Day games dominated by pitching, the Royals scored early and held on to defeat the Red Sox. The Royals' Barrett Juneau pitched 5 1/3 scoreless and was relieved by Colin Leroux to complete the one-hitter. The Red Sox' Ben Harrison also pitched an excellent game, with the 3 runs scoring on errors.
In the 2nd game of Memorial Day evening, the pitching again dominated, with the White Sox' Evan Chacon throwing a 11 strikeout one-hit complete game. The Yankees' Cory Barnes' also went the distance, with 6 K's, with Jordan Villavaso having a great defensive game and collecting the sole hit for the Yanks.
