Falcons clinch SWAC with a 6-2 win over Holly Springs

Michael Merryman was on the hill for Green Hope in a conference game Thursday night against the Holly Springs Golden Hawks at Holly Springs High School.  Merryman (8-1) gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking one in going the distance for the fourth time this season to pick up the win and clinch the SWAC conference title. Merryman struggled a little early to establish his breaking and off speed pitches but pitched to contact with his fastball and the defense did a great job of keeping runners off the bases and minimizing the damage.

Thomas Yoder and Stephen Pitarra reached on singles but were left stranded in the first inning and Holly Springs couldn’t capitalize on a RJ Arthur double and the inning ended with no score. Troy Maslowski led off the second with an infield hit, moved to second on a sac bunt by Chris Tutwiler and scored on line drive single to left by Austen Jones. Jones advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a line drive single to center by Vincent Addona. Eric Gilbert lined the next pitch to left-center but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double to end the inning with the Falcons up 2-0. Holly Springs got on the board in the bottom half on a walk to by Wantz and a double by George to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Falcons had a scoring opportunity in the third when Yoder led off by lining a double down the left field line but Pitarra’s liner back up the middle was snared by Hawks pitcher Alex Dunn, who fired to second to double up courtesy runner Eli Murrane. Merryman gave up a single but held the Hawks scoreless in the home half. Following a scoreless fourth for the Falcons, the Hawks tied it at two on a double by Hughes, an infield hit by Wantz and a double play grounder by Willadson.

The Falcons pulled away in the fifth when following two quick outs, Yoder lined a single to right, Pitarra walked and Matt Duckworth reached on a catcher’s interference to load the bases. Troy Maslowski singled to center scoring Murrane and Pitarra. Chris Tutwiler turned a seven pitch at-bat into a line drive single off the glove of second baseman George scoring Duckworth to take a 5-2 lead. Merryman began to settle into a groove as he retired the Hawks in order on nine pitches following a leadoff single by Duncan.

The score remained 5-2 through six and Pitarra led off the seventh by lining a single to right and scoring on a double over the centerfielder’s head by Maslowski to go up 6-2. Merryman finished strong as he retired nine consecutive batters to prevent any chance of a Hawks comeback and seal the win for the Falcons.

Offensively, the Falcons were led by Troy Maslowski (3-4, 2B, 3RBI, R), Thomas Yoder (3-4, 2B), Chris Tutwiler (2-3, RBI), Austen Jones (2-3, RBI, R), Stephen Pitarra (2-3, 2R, BB) & Vincent Addona (1-3, RBI).
