Central finished in ninth place with 93½ points. West Fargo took first with 222.

Roberts, ranked No. 1 in the North Dakota state coaches poll, wrestled No. 2-ranked Anthony Charboneau of West Fargo for the title.

“Roberts had a tough match in the finals,” Central coach Matt Berglund said. “He was actually down 5-1 and came back and won 8-7. He got behind. He didn't panic, and he dominated the last two periods. He'll probably wrestle him a lot more this year, so it will be interesting to see how they go.”

Mike Gavere (215 pounds) placed second, Matt Wright (125) third and Joshua Rau (160) and Tom Burns (189) each sixth for the Knights.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. - Valley City won the three lowest weight classes to fuel a 44-32 win over Grand Forks Central on Tuesday.

It was the season opening meet for both teams.

“Half of our lineup was wrestling in their first varsity match and none of them won,” Central coach Matt Berglund said. “There was a bit of a difference in experience. Valley City is a much more experienced team.”

Central got pins from Matt Wright at 125, James Wright at 130, Tom Burns at 189 and Mike Gavere at 215.

Jerrod Peterson also won at 135 and Josh Roberts won at 140 for the Knights.
