Taggart's Welding: 2010 GCMFL Champions

Taggart's Welding defeated East Side Mario's in two games, both by 1-0 scores, to win the 2010 GCMFL championship. Taggart's Welding - playing as Mattamy Homes last year - becomes the first team in over a decade to repeat as league champions.

Both games of the final featured great pitching by Neil Cooke of Taggart's Welding and Billy Gerber of East Side Mario's.

Game #2 went to extra innings, with Billy Gerber throwing a one-hitter through eight. Unfortunately for ESM, a one-hitter was not good enough as Neil Cooke threw a perfect game for Taggart's Welding, who scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 8th on a bases-loaded walk.

Congratulations to both teams on a well played final.

Tuesday, October 5
GCMFL Finals

The GCMFL playoff finals get underway this week, with regular season champs East Side Mario's playing host to #2 ranked Taggart's Welding.

Game #1 is on Wednesday October 6th at 6:30 PM, with games 2 and 3 scheduled for Tuesday October 12th and Wednesday October 13, also at 6:30 PM. All of the games will be played at the AY Jackson diamond at 150 Abbeyhill Rd in Kanata.

Tournament Wrap-Up

Congratulations to Taggart's Welding who defeated Mattamy Homes by scoring a run in the top of the 7th and holding on for a 5-4 victory to claim the tournament championship.

The "B" trophy went to Broadway Bar & Grill Stittsville who defeated Trend-Arlington 14-1.

All in all it was a great weekend, with good fastball weather, nice facilities, and highly competitive games. Of the 18 round-robin and 6 playoff games played, there were no games ended early due to the "mercy" rule.

A big thanks to:

  • The Broadway Bar & Grill in Stittsville for sponsoring our tournament and hosting our pub night on Friday. The tournament trophy is on display at Broadway's and will soon have a plaque added to it for the 2010 winners.
  • Combat Sports for donating a Gear Afflicted bat as a door prize for our Friday pub night.
  • Our two non-league teams: Blackburn and Trend-Arlington. Having 12 teams made for a much better schedule, and both teams played great ball and were very competitive.
  • Geoff Lathem and the Huntley Community Association for the use of their excellent facilities and the grooming of the diamonds each day.
  • All of the players and fans who helped keep the park free of litter - that goes a long way toward giving the league a good reputation with the community association and the residents around the ball park.
  • The men in blue for working through the Saturday morning rain and the Sunday afternoon heat.
  • Jeff Legge for organizing things including looking after the Combat draw on Friday night and making sure the league equipment was taken care of.

Monday, November 9
GCMFL AGM/Banquet

Congratulations on a great 2009 fastball season!

As a wrap to our season we thought we’d send a note with information for our AGM and Annual banquet to wrap up the 2009 GCMFL season. The AGM and banquet will be held at the Stittsville Broadway Bar & Grill on Saturday November 28th.

Please alert your members that we will be accepting 2010 registration forms and fees at the banquet using 2009 prices (Cost is $150 for the 2010 season, or $250 for 2 seasons (2010 and 2011)). As a BONUS anyone who registers at the banquet will get a free pitcher of beer! The AGM will commence at 6:00 PM.

As an incentive to have more players attend the AGM and add their input into the league for 2009, any league member in attendance at the beginning of the AGM will be given a ticket for a free beer + a raffle ticket for a door prize.

Some items for team captains/co-captains:

  • Please send your team MVP name to us ASAP
  • Please get your team pitcher and catcher to submit one name for the Gil Read trophy (top hitter)
  • Please send your team's vote for the recipient of the 2009 Martin Kammer award. The nominees from our website include : Mike Vandenberg, Bruce Robinson (2007 winner), Billy Gerber, Aaron Amo, Tom Chambers, Joe Glynn, Tyler Nystedt, Eric Rosenquist, Matt Watts.
  • As you know we made a big investment in new bats in 2009 and we’d like to keep them close so we can leverage them in 2010 so we are asking that you bring the league-supplied Combat bat to the AGM.

The League Banquet will commence at 8:00 PM.

This year we have a budget to cover prizes for MVPs and tournament/league champions. Members must be in attendance in order to collect their prize. Rather than taking liberty on some shopping we’ve decided that we’d put the budget to purchasing a variety of gift cards as they do in golf tournaments

Sincerely,
The GCMFL Executive

Playoff Semi-Finals

We're down to the final four in the quest for the Barry Taggart Memorial trophy as GCMFL champions.

#1 seed Laurysen Kitchens puts their 13-3 record on the line against #6 East Side Mario's in one semi-final. Laurysen won the season series 2-0 by scores of 6-0 and 4-3, but ESM has been in a groove since the start of August, winning 7 of their last 9 games.

In the other semi-final, #2 seed ASAP Print Management faces #5 seed Mattamy Homes. ASAP had the edge over Mattamy in the regular season, winning 9-1 and tieing 1-1, but the teams haven't played each-other since late June.

Both series kick off on Monday September 14th at the A.Y. Jackson diamond.

Sunday, August 23
Playoff Match-ups

The regular season is over and the playoffs get underway on Tuesday August 25th.

There was a tie for 4th place in the final standings between Local Heroes and Mattamy Homes. The teams had idential 8-7-1 records, each won a game in the season series, and the head-to-head run differential was zero. As a result, 4th place was determined by a coin toss after Mattamy's game on August 24th. Local Heroes won the toss (Mattamy called tails and it came up heads), so Local Heroes gets 4th and Mattamy is 5th.

Below shows the 1st 2 games for each seed in the 1st round of playoffs, the game 3s if necessary will be determined later.

Tues. Aug. 25th

8th seed (Air1One) vs 9th seed (Cavanaugh) 6:30pm - Air1One wins and is the 8th seed.

Tournament Wrap-Up

Congratulations to Medaglia Auto Imports who defeated ASAP Print Management by scoring 3 in the bottom of the 6th and then held on for a 5-4 come-from-behind victory to claim the tournament championship.

The "B" trophy went to Laurysen Kitchens who defeated Mattamy Homes 4-1.

All in all it was a great weekend, with good fastball weather, nice facilities, and highly competitive games. Of the 18 round-robin and 6 playoff games played, only three were decided by a "mercy", and in all three of those cases it was because the losing team's starting pitcher was unavailable.

A big thanks to:

  • The Broadway Bar & Grill in Stittsville for sponsoring our tournament and hosting our pub night on Friday. The tournament trophy is on display at Broadway's and will soon have a plaque added to it for the 2009 winners.
  • Our three non-league teams: The Insomniacs, the Blackburn Warriors, and Trend-Arlington. Having 12 teams made for a much better schedule, and all three teams played great ball and were very competitive.
  • Geoff Lathem and the Huntley Community Association for the use of their excellent facilities and the grooming of the diamonds each day.
  • All of the players and fans who helped keep the park free of litter - that goes a long way toward giving the league a good reputation with the community association and the residents around the ball park.
  • The men in blue for working through the heat and doing an excellent job despite being shorthanded all weekend.
  • Mike Vandenberg for looking after the Combat draw on Friday night and the league equipment all weekend - taking it home each night and making sure it was back at the diamonds before the next morning's games.

Final standings were:

Pool "A"
Ottawa Home Services  2-0-1 5 +12  A3

Tournament Weekend

We were fortunate enough to find 3 more teams to give us 12 for our tournament. The format is 3 pools of 4 teams with a 3-game round-robin. The pool winners and the next best team advance to the "A" playoffs, the 5th through 8th best teams advance to the "B" playoffs.

The full schedule is online and a PDF is available in the Handouts section of the web site, or via this link: Tournament Schedule.

Tournament-specific rules are available in the League Rules section of the web site, or via this link: Tournament Rules.

Players

League teams are allowed to pick up extra players for the tournament. There are no restrictions on what position pick-up players play or where they hit in the batting order, although pitchers must be approved by the executive committee. Weekend roster size is unlimited, but normal league rules where everybody bats are in effect. Non league players must pay $20 prior to playing their first game and must play in at least one round-robin game to be eligible to play in the Sunday playoff games. If you're interested in playing in the tournament, send an email containing your fastball resume to captains (at) gcmfl (dot) com so that teams in need of players may get in touch with you.

Pub Night

Head to the Stittsville Broadway Bar & Grill after your game on Friday night for our league pub-night. Each team will receive a food & beverage voucher when they arrive at the pub, plus there will be a draw for a new Combat Virus Morphed bat valued at $300 once all of the games finish and the teams arrive at the pub.

Bocce Tournament

There will also be a sign-up sheet for anyone who wishes to enter a double-elimination outdoor bocce tournament, to be played Saturday and Sunday between ball games at the Carp Fairgrounds. Entry fee is $20 per two-person team, with the winner taking half of the proceeds and the other half going to the league. Anyone is free to sign up for the bocce tournament - league membership is not a requirement. Teams may sign up in advance by emailing eric (at) rosenquist (dot) com and providing the names of both players and phone numbers where the players can be reached during the tournament weekend.

League Tournament Information
Our league tournament is fast approaching (June 12th-14th), so here's an update on what the executive have been up to concerning the tournament.

Tournament Location

As you may have heard, we were unable to get the Bridlewood Core Park diamonds this year. The city originally told us that we were confirmed for the June 12-14th weekend at Core Park, but then reneged on that this spring when they realized that a large slo-pitch tournament needed the diamonds that same weekend. That slo-pitch tournament always books the weekend before Father's Day, which for the past several years put them on a weekend around June 5th or 6th. With Father's Day being later this year (June 21st) the city messed up and we got bumped.

A.Y. was also booked on the weekend of the 12-14th, so the best the city could offer us was J.C. plus the Beaverbrook diamond by Mlacak arena. We considered moving the tournament to the 19-21st weekend (Father's Day), but there's a large fastball tournament that weekend at Carlington Park that many of our league's top pitchers and players will be attending. The weekend before was just as bad with all of the GOFL teams (and therefore many of our best players) participating in a "showcase day" on the Saturday, so we felt it best to stick to the original weekend.

We expanded our search for diamonds to include neighboring communities with twin diamonds. Stittsville's Alexander Grove park would have been a great location but it too was booked. In the end, we settled on the twin diamonds at the Carp Fairgrounds. Both are in excellent shape and are substantially cheaper than what we would have paid for city-managed diamonds (about $800 for the weekend vs. about $1600). The Carp diamonds are adjacent to the W.E. Johnston arena and are part of the Carp Fairgrounds complex; they're quite easy to get to with the parking lot entrance off Carp Rd. just a bit north of the main intersection in Carp.

Schedule

We'll do our best to stick with the historical scheduling format of giving every team one game Friday night, two Saturday, and then semis & finals on Sunday. With 9 teams however that will be impossible. We're asking for feedback from league members on some key issues that will impact the tournament and its schedule. We could stick with just our 9 league teams and try to figure out a format that guarantees everyone 3 games, or we could open things up to outside rec-level teams for the first time ever. We've had some interest from both the Fitzroy and Trend-Arlington men's leagues, so we could explore that and try to get either 10 or 12 teams in total. Outside teams would have to pay a fee (probably in the vicinity of $300) but there would not be any prize money for the tournament winners. Pitchers for outside teams would need to be approved by the league executive to ensure that their skill level is on par with our league. Please let the executive know your thoughts on the use of outside teams and other schedule issues. A survey is attached to this article - please vote for your preferred option.

Sponsor

Through good fortune and hard work, we have a tournament sponsor for this year and next! The manager of the Stittsville Broadway was impressed with the turnout for the registration session we held there and approached us about sponsoring. Dan and Trevor have negotiated a two-year sponsorship deal with him that will bring the league significant additional revenue over two seasons. Our tournament banquet night (Friday June 12th) will be held at the Stittsville Broadway and the tournament champion trophy will be named after the restaurant and kept at their location for the year. The Stittsville Broadway is just 10 minutes south on Carp Rd. from the diamonds, so it's a good fit for both parties given the location of the diamonds. After your game on Friday night, please support our new sponsor and bring your team. There will be some free things for your team to enjoy (exact details to be ironed out) and a draw for a new Combat high performance bat for those who attend. As we like to do with all our sponsors, please come out and show your support, they have made a big financial commitment to our league.

Post-draft update

The rosters are set and regular season play has begun as of May 4th.

If you're still interested in playing, please fill out and submit a form. We typically lose several players during the course of the season and we fill those spots from the waiting list. Players on the waiting list can also be called on as spares if a team is short on players. Funds aren't due until you are granted a full-time roster spot.

The registration form is available in the "Handouts" section or you access it from this link: Registration Form

Sunday, April 5
Registration Update

Our registration sessions are over but if you are interested in playing, please get in touch with one of the executive members as soon as possible:

Dan Murphy            president@gcmfl.com
Tony MacDonald     vp1@gcmfl.com
Eric Rosenquist       vp2@gcmfl.com
Mike Vandenberg    equipment@gcmfl.com
Duane Bromley        treasurer@gcmfl.com

We currently have 100 players registered - a few too many for 8 teams of 12 players, but not enough for 9 teams of 12. We're discussing our options which include:

  • 8 teams of up to 13 players per team (we're currently 4 players short)
  • 9 teams of up to 12 players per team (we're 8 players short)
  • 10 teams of 11-12 players per team (we're 10-20 players short)
Once we determine what we're doing, we'll set a date for the pitcher & player draft. If you have any opinions on the options shown above or have other suggestions, please contact a member of the executive.

GCMFL AGM/Banquet

Our 2008 AGM/Banquet will be held at the Kanata Sports Club on Saturday October 4th. The AGM will begin at 6PM and the banquet/awards portion of the evening will follow. There is no charge for admission, and all league members are encouraged to attend the AGM to vote on whatever motions are put forward. We’ll also be electing new executive members, and there will definitely be some executive vacancies that we’ll be looking to fill, so please attend and volunteer to serve if you’d like to help run the league.

All league members who are in attendance at the beginning of the AGM will be entered into a draw for free registration next season. The first round of beverages will also be supplied to those present at the start of the AGM.

Note that the Kanata Sports Club is running a members-only event during the afternoon of October 4th, which is the start of the NHL regular season with two games in Europe. For those wishing to attend, KSC memberships are only $25/year and can be purchased at the door. A KSC membership is not required for the GCMFL AGM/Banquet which begins at 6PM.

We're happy to announce that the league is now completely out of debt and will have enough money to supply some food & beverages for those attending the banquet. Trophies will be presented to each of the winning teams, and individual team MVPs will be recognized. We also have two special individual awards that are presented to honour league members who passed away in 2007.

The Martin Kammer Memorial Trophy will be presented to the league member who best exemplifies sportsmanship and dedication to the game. The league captains will be selecting the recipient from a list of nominations put forward by members on the web site. The Gil Read Memorial Trophy will be presented to the league’s top hitter, as voted on by the pitchers and catchers of the league. Please mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend.

Local Heroes Wins Championship

Congratulations to Local Heroes who defeated Murray Refrigeration in two games to claim the 2008 GCMFL championship.

Local Heroes swept each of their three series en route to the championship, capping off a near-perfect season that saw them go a combined 24-1 in league, tournament, and playoff games. In doing so, they became the first team in well over a decade to win the GCMFL "triple crown" as the top team in the regular season, tournament, and playoffs.

Playoffs - Finals

Update: game #1 on Monday Sept 22nd has been changed to an 8PM start time.

The 2008 GCMFL finals will see Local Heroes face Murray Refrigeration in a three game series starting on Monday September 22nd. Game #2 is scheduled for Wednesday September 24th with the third game on the 29th if necessary.

Locals and Murrays were the top two teams in the regular season, both in terms of the standings and their offensive production. Local Heroes was the only team in the league to crack the century mark in runs scored over the 14 game schedule with an even 100; Murrays were second with 86 runs scored. They were also the two best defensive teams in the league with Locals giving up only 29 runs and Murrays 68.

The season series was split, with Murrays handing Locals their only defeat of the season in a 4-3 decision on June 9th. The rematch turned out to be a disappointment with Murrays having to forfeit the game due to lack of players. The teams also met in the tournament championship which saw Local Heroes come from behind for a 5-3 win.

Game 1 starts at 8PM with games 2 and 3 scheduled for 7PM at the A.Y. Jackson diamond.

Round 1 is over and the match ups for the semi-finals are set.

#1 Local Heroes takes on #5 Kanata Sports Club. Local Heroes took both regular season games against KSC, winning 9-3 on May 20th and 10-0 on July 15th.

#2 Murray Refrigeration faces #3 Amsted. Murray's won both regular season games by scores of 11-7 on May 21st and 11-5 on July 15th.

Both series will begin the week of September 8th.

The regular season is over and the playoff match ups are set.

#1 Local Heroes takes on #8 Medaglia. The season series was 2-0 for Local Heroes with Ben Gigliotti getting both wins.

#2 Murray Refrigeration faces #7 Air1One Mechanical. The season series was 1-1 with Murray's winning 7-3 and Air1One winning 3-0.

#3 Amsted is home to #6 ASAP Print Management. Amsted won both games in the season series by a combined score of 9-5.

#4 seed 4 Season Pool & Spa faces Cairn division rival #5 Kanata Sports Club. The season series was tied 1-1 with the team combining for 29 runs.

All of the series will get underway the week of August 25th.

Tournament Update

Update: Congratulations to Local Heroes who won the rescheduled "A" final on July 2nd, defeating Murray Refrigeration 5-3 in a close game that saw Murray's grab the lead in the first and keep it until the 4th inning when the Local Heroes bats came to life.

Congratulations to Medaglia Auto Imports who won the "B" final, defeating Amsted 8-3 in a storm-shortened game.

The "A" final between Murray Refrigeration and Local Heroes completed two scoreless innings when the rain hit again, forcing play to be halted. The "A" final will start from scratch at a later date.

Congrats to Ryan Bond (Murray Refrigeration) who won Saturday's home run derby on a day where it was not easy to hit one out of the park due to the high winds. Ryan defeated Mark Saunders and Darren Ladouceur in a sudden death overtime final round, hitting two home runs on two swings to claim the crown.

Players Wanted!

We're still a few guys shy of having an even number of 12-man teams, so anyone who is interested in playing some fastball this summer is encouraged to sign up. If you get your name in before our player draft (April 6th) you're almost certain to get a roster spot.

Email president (at) gcmfl.com with any questions or simply fill out the registration form in our Handouts section and send it in electronically.

Update: our draft is over and we now have 8 teams with full rosters. Feel free to sign up - there are always a few guys that have to drop out early in the season due to work/school/injury, and we fill those spots from the names on our waiting list.

2008 Registration - One More Chance

The poor weather last Sunday prevented a lot of guys from getting to the final registration session, so we'll hold one more registration session in the hope that we can muster up enough players to have an 8-team league.

The session will be held on Tuesday March 18th from 7-9PM at Local Heroes Kanata. The Leafs play the Islanders in Long Island that night and the Habs are at home to St. Louis, so swing by, sign up, and cheer against the Sens' conference rivals. It's also 30¢/wing night @ Locals, so if the 8 hockey games on the go that night aren't enough to pique your interest, come for the registration and stay for the wings.

Local Heroes Kanata is located at 4049 Carling Avenue just east of the Carling Ave / March Rd. intersection.

Players who register on the 18th will be eligible to be protected by their 2008 teams.

If you can't make it to this session, please send in a completed form electronically or have a teammate drop a completed form off on your behalf. The registration form is available in the Handouts section of the league web site.

2007 Tournament Results
Congratulations to Local Heroes who defeated Murray's Refrigeration 7-5 in the "A" final, and to Medaglia Auto Imports who defeated Restore-All 8-3 in the "B" final. The "A" semi between Joe Johnson Equipment Inc and Murray's Refrigeration went to extra innings, and the other between Local Heroes and Amsted was decided by a single run which was scored with two out in the top of the seventh.

To see individual game results, go to the Schedules section of the web site and select "2007 Tournament" as the Season.

Scott Jessiman (Murray's Refrigeration) won the home run derby on Saturday afternoon, hitting 5 home runs in 10 swings during the final round. Thanks to all who participated, and to Al Read (Restore-All) who organized the derby.

A big thanks to the Carp I4C Victory team from the Greater Ottawa Fastball League for running the BBQ behind diamond #1 on Saturday and Sunday, and to all of the players who helped out by looking after league equipment or picking up garbage.

Thanks also to David Boyle and his staff at The Broadway Bar & Grill for hosting our pub night on Friday, and to Labatts for the t-shirts and ball caps they donated.

Monday, June 11
Tournament Weekend
Our annual mid-season tournament is this coming weekend, June 15-17 at the Bridlewood Core Park diamonds. Check the "Schedules" or "Calendar" section of the web site for the full schedule.

Pub Night

The Broadway Bar & Grill across the road from the Bridlewood Core Park diamonds will be the location for our pub night on Friday after the games have finished. We're working with Labatt and the Broadway and hope to get some prizes from them, plus there will be a 50-50 draw and other league fundraising activities.

The Broadway has booked a two-girl band called "The Divas" to provide live music this Friday. Pass the word and plan to attend!

BBQ

As they did last year, the I4C Victory team from the Greater Ottawa Fastball League will be running a BBQ behind diamond #1 to raise money for their team. It was very well received last year and everyone seemed to enjoy having good food available at the diamond.

Volunteers

If you have high-school children that would like to do some volunteer work toward their required 40-hour total, please have them contact Al Read (aread@lwlaw.com) as he will be coordinating things that weekend. Were looking for a few kids to help rake the infield between games, pick up garbage, and run errands as needed. The work will not be physically difficult and we will sign their volunteer form for as many hours as they are at the diamond and helping out, so it will be a great way to get them closer to fulfilling their volunteer requirements.

Congratulations to Murray's Refrigeration who defeated Condominium Management Group 5-1 in the "A" final, and to Kanata Sports Club who defeated RBC Investments 8-7 in the "B" final.

Tim Power (State Farm) won the home run derby on Saturday afternoon, hitting an impressive 5 home runs in 10 swings during the final round. For a moment it looked like there would be a two or three-way swing-off to determine a winner, with Shawn Simzer (Amsted) and Scott Jessiman (Murray's) both tied with three home runs before Tim stepped up to the plate. Thanks to all who participated, and to Al Read (Restore-All) and Mike Vandenberg (CMG) who organized the derby.

A big thanks to the Carp I4C Victory team from the Greater Ottawa Fastball League for running the BBQ behind diamond #1 on Saturday and Sunday, and to all of the players who helped out by looking after league equipment or picking up garbage.

Thanks also to David Boyle and his staff at The Broadway Bar & Grill for hosting our pub night on Friday, to Labatts for the t-shirts and beer glasses they donated, and to James Smith (CMG) from LaBarge Weinstein for donating the keg that was raffled off on Friday night.

GCMFL Team Wins Blackburn Tournament
A squad of 7 Restore-All and 4 RBC players won the Blackburn league tournament held August 5th through 7th. The team had only one loss to a good young squad from Prince Edward County, which they avenged by defeating the same team 10-6 in the final on Sunday.

Congratulations to all who participated - it was a total team effort with excellent defence and hitting from everyone in the lineup. Duane Bromley pitched all but 4 innings for the team and earned tournament MVP honours.

A big thanks to the Blackburn league for hosting a great tournament - hopefully more GCMFL teams will be able to participate next year.

Fitzroy Harbour Competitive Tournament Results
The "Glen Cairn I4C Selects" had a disappointing weekend going 0-2 before having to pull out of the tournament.

Friday's game saw a 6-3 loss to the eventual tournament winner, West Carleton Electric. After being down 6-0 going into the fifth, a solo home run by Pat O'Connor brought the team into the game. Then in the sixth inning the boys loaded the bases with none out but were only able to cash two more runs before the WC defense made some very impressive plays to hold the score @ 6-3. After a slow start by pitcher Todd Wilson, he settled in and retired several innings in order to keep the game close. The game saw some great defensive work from the I4C side as well, including a perfect strike-out-throw out double play by catcher Adam McNamara to 2B Troy Drew. Also of note was a diving stop by Pat O'Connor at short to make a perfect throw from his knees to Steve McLaughlin at first.

Saturday saw a game against the young team from Quyon. Down 1-0 going into the 4th, Trever Hill hit a solo home-run to tie the game. After a 2 run shot by Dan Rollin, the boys took a 4-1 lead into the 7th. The Quyon team then scored three runs to tie the game and send it into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, a perfect sac bunt and a blooper to right field scored the winning run. Neil Cooke pitched a great game only allowing one run through 6 innings.

Even though the results weren't what we wanted, the team did turn some heads and have been invited back. Congrats to all who participated for putting forth a fine effort.
