Tournament Update

Update: Congratulations to Local Heroes who won the rescheduled "A" final on July 2nd, defeating Murray Refrigeration 5-3 in a close game that saw Murray's grab the lead in the first and keep it until the 4th inning when the Local Heroes bats came to life.

Congratulations to Medaglia Auto Imports who won the "B" final, defeating Amsted 8-3 in a storm-shortened game.

The "A" final between Murray Refrigeration and Local Heroes completed two scoreless innings when the rain hit again, forcing play to be halted. The "A" final will start from scratch at a later date.

Congrats to Ryan Bond (Murray Refrigeration) who won Saturday's home run derby on a day where it was not easy to hit one out of the park due to the high winds. Ryan defeated Mark Saunders and Darren Ladouceur in a sudden death overtime final round, hitting two home runs on two swings to claim the crown.

Players Wanted!

We're still a few guys shy of having an even number of 12-man teams, so anyone who is interested in playing some fastball this summer is encouraged to sign up. If you get your name in before our player draft (April 6th) you're almost certain to get a roster spot.

Email president (at) gcmfl.com with any questions or simply fill out the registration form in our Handouts section and send it in electronically.

Update: our draft is over and we now have 8 teams with full rosters. Feel free to sign up - there are always a few guys that have to drop out early in the season due to work/school/injury, and we fill those spots from the names on our waiting list.

2008 Registration - One More Chance

The poor weather last Sunday prevented a lot of guys from getting to the final registration session, so we'll hold one more registration session in the hope that we can muster up enough players to have an 8-team league.

The session will be held on Tuesday March 18th from 7-9PM at Local Heroes Kanata. The Leafs play the Islanders in Long Island that night and the Habs are at home to St. Louis, so swing by, sign up, and cheer against the Sens' conference rivals. It's also 30¢/wing night @ Locals, so if the 8 hockey games on the go that night aren't enough to pique your interest, come for the registration and stay for the wings.

Local Heroes Kanata is located at 4049 Carling Avenue just east of the Carling Ave / March Rd. intersection.

Players who register on the 18th will be eligible to be protected by their 2008 teams.

If you can't make it to this session, please send in a completed form electronically or have a teammate drop a completed form off on your behalf. The registration form is available in the Handouts section of the league web site.

GCMFL AGM / Banquet
Our 2007 AGM/Banquet will be held at the Kanata Sports Club on Friday October 26th. The AGM will begin at 6PM and the banquet/awards portion of the evening will follow. There is no charge for admission, and all league members are encouraged to attend the AGM to vote on whatever motions are put forward. We’ll also be electing new executive members, and there will definitely be some executive vacancies that we’ll be looking to fill, so please attend and volunteer to serve if you’d like to help run the league.

Due to the league’s debt situation we will not be providing food or prizes, but we will be recognizing the various champions and team MVPs, and all of the trophies will be up to date and presented to the winners. We have two new trophies this season that will be presented in memory of league members who tragically passed away in 2007.

The Martin Kammer Memorial Trophy will be presented to the league member who best exemplifies sportsmanship and dedication to the game. The league captains will be selecting the recipient from a list of nominations put forward by members on the web site.

The Gil Read Memorial Trophy will be presented to the league’s top hitter, as voted on by the pitchers and catchers of the league.

Please mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend.

The softball community and the world in general suffered a great loss this weekend with the passing away of Gil Read. Many have asked for details about his wake and funeral. Please read the Ottawa Citizen article for the full details; if you wish you can sign the guestbook at remembering.ca.

2007 Tournament Results
Congratulations to Local Heroes who defeated Murray's Refrigeration 7-5 in the "A" final, and to Medaglia Auto Imports who defeated Restore-All 8-3 in the "B" final. The "A" semi between Joe Johnson Equipment Inc and Murray's Refrigeration went to extra innings, and the other between Local Heroes and Amsted was decided by a single run which was scored with two out in the top of the seventh.

To see individual game results, go to the Schedules section of the web site and select "2007 Tournament" as the Season.

Scott Jessiman (Murray's Refrigeration) won the home run derby on Saturday afternoon, hitting 5 home runs in 10 swings during the final round. Thanks to all who participated, and to Al Read (Restore-All) who organized the derby.

A big thanks to the Carp I4C Victory team from the Greater Ottawa Fastball League for running the BBQ behind diamond #1 on Saturday and Sunday, and to all of the players who helped out by looking after league equipment or picking up garbage.

Thanks also to David Boyle and his staff at The Broadway Bar & Grill for hosting our pub night on Friday, and to Labatts for the t-shirts and ball caps they donated.

Monday, June 11
Tournament Weekend
Our annual mid-season tournament is this coming weekend, June 15-17 at the Bridlewood Core Park diamonds. Check the "Schedules" or "Calendar" section of the web site for the full schedule.

Pub Night

The Broadway Bar & Grill across the road from the Bridlewood Core Park diamonds will be the location for our pub night on Friday after the games have finished. We're working with Labatt and the Broadway and hope to get some prizes from them, plus there will be a 50-50 draw and other league fundraising activities.

The Broadway has booked a two-girl band called "The Divas" to provide live music this Friday. Pass the word and plan to attend!

BBQ

As they did last year, the I4C Victory team from the Greater Ottawa Fastball League will be running a BBQ behind diamond #1 to raise money for their team. It was very well received last year and everyone seemed to enjoy having good food available at the diamond.

Volunteers

If you have high-school children that would like to do some volunteer work toward their required 40-hour total, please have them contact Al Read (aread@lwlaw.com) as he will be coordinating things that weekend. Were looking for a few kids to help rake the infield between games, pick up garbage, and run errands as needed. The work will not be physically difficult and we will sign their volunteer form for as many hours as they are at the diamond and helping out, so it will be a great way to get them closer to fulfilling their volunteer requirements.

Tim Power (State Farm) won the home run derby on Saturday afternoon, hitting an impressive 5 home runs in 10 swings during the final round. Thanks to all who participated, and to Al Read (Restore-All) and Mike Vandenberg (CMG) who organized the derby.

GCMFL Team Wins Blackburn Tournament
A squad of 7 Restore-All and 4 RBC players won the Blackburn league tournament held August 5th through 7th. The team had only one loss to a good young squad from Prince Edward County, which they avenged by defeating the same team 10-6 in the final on Sunday.

Congratulations to all who participated - it was a total team effort with excellent defence and hitting from everyone in the lineup. Duane Bromley pitched all but 4 innings for the team and earned tournament MVP honours.

A big thanks to the Blackburn league for hosting a great tournament - hopefully more GCMFL teams will be able to participate next year.

Fitzroy Harbour Competitive Tournament Results
The "Glen Cairn I4C Selects" had a disappointing weekend going 0-2 before having to pull out of the tournament.

Friday's game saw a 6-3 loss to the eventual tournament winner, West Carleton Electric. After being down 6-0 going into the fifth, a solo home run by Pat O'Connor brought the team into the game. Then in the sixth inning the boys loaded the bases with none out but were only able to cash two more runs before the WC defense made some very impressive plays to hold the score @ 6-3. After a slow start by pitcher Todd Wilson, he settled in and retired several innings in order to keep the game close. The game saw some great defensive work from the I4C side as well, including a perfect strike-out-throw out double play by catcher Adam McNamara to 2B Troy Drew. Also of note was a diving stop by Pat O'Connor at short to make a perfect throw from his knees to Steve McLaughlin at first.

Saturday saw a game against the young team from Quyon. Down 1-0 going into the 4th, Trever Hill hit a solo home-run to tie the game. After a 2 run shot by Dan Rollin, the boys took a 4-1 lead into the 7th. The Quyon team then scored three runs to tie the game and send it into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, a perfect sac bunt and a blooper to right field scored the winning run. Neil Cooke pitched a great game only allowing one run through 6 innings.

Even though the results weren't what we wanted, the team did turn some heads and have been invited back. Congrats to all who participated for putting forth a fine effort.
