Bantam “A” Stars Food Drive

The Gloucester-Cumberland Bantam “A” Stars Girls hockey team took their game to a new level.  These highly talented hockey players took their game to the streets in support of the Ottawa Food Bank.

On Saturday, December 5 the Stars canvassed various areas within the Gloucester-Cumberland district to collect non-perishable items and/or donations that will support local families or individuals in our community that needs emergency food assistance.

Head Coach, Chris Fraser asked his team to come up with an activity that would “give back” to our community, and the team didn’t fall short!  The Stars goalie suggested that the team initiate a food drive.  Recently, this goalie saw a statistic regarding the Ottawa Food Bank and how they were reaching out for assistance to stock their shelves.  During the holiday season, the need is high and supplies run low.  The goalie brought this to the team and the team was in complete agreement!  This talented group of girls worked hard to make this Competitive team however; they also realize that they have the good fortune to be part of privileged families.

The Ottawa Food Bank helps 40,000 people each month, 40% of whom are children through its 130 Member Agencies. Organizations like The Mission, Shepherds

of Good Hope, men’s and women’s shelters, school meal programs, and emergency grocery programs benefit from the 12 tons of food that leaves The Ottawa Food Bank warehouse each and every working day.

The whole team was very proud to provide The Ottawa Food Bank with over 13 boxes of canned and non-perishable food items as well as toiletries and baby needs.

Thanks to the Gloucester-Cumberland Bantam “A” Girls hockey team and the many community families that supported their cause!

Novice Stars bring home GOLD from the Napanee Crunch Invitational Tournament

Novice Stars bring home another GOLD.  Off to a very strong start our girls won 7 - 0 vs Napanee.  Game 2 was a 10 - 0 win but our opponents Smith Falls unfortunately played us with only 8 skaters and a goalie due to the flu running through their team which forced them to pull out of the tournament after our game.  Game 3 was definitely our biggest challenge going up against Nepean we lost 3 to 1.  With our spot in the finals already secured after our 1st two wins we faced Nepean again for the championship game... It was a nail bitter but our girls played awesome ending with a 2 - 1 victory!

A big THANK YOU to our Tournament Activities Committee and all the parents for great meals and great company!  Congratulations to all the girls and their coaching staff consisting of Tim Belanger, Matt Fawcett, Chris Fawcett, Shane Pasiechnyk and trainer Janet McKeage.

GCGH Midget AA Win 2009 Willowdale Red Wings Tournament

The Midget AA participated  in the Midget AA 12 team division  at the Willowdale Red Wings Tournament on the weekend of September 25th. The GCGH team was the wild card into the semi-finals after winning two games and loosing one game in the round robin. It had been a tough week for many of the girls who were dealing with the loss of a very special friend, however the girls showed real character and focus in making the most of the opportunity that was given to them on Sunday. They won their semi-final game 3-2,  in an exciting game over the host Willowdale Red Wings team. The girls  then went on to beat Oakville 4-0 in the final game.

Long-time Minor Hockey Executive and Coach receives Brian Kilrea Award
2009 Recipient for the Brian Kilrea Award for Excellence in Coaching

Charles Chamberlain has been coaching and volunteering in hockey circles throughout the National Capital Region for many years. His energy, dedication and professionalism has established him as a leader to youth in both school and hockey associations.

Words used to describe Charles are: inspiring, dedicated, motivated and passionate. Throughout his many years of coaching, both girls and boys have benefited from his leadership. His sense of fairness, equality and calmness on the bench makes hockey a rewarding experience for all.

This year, if not for Charles’ hard work and persistence in recruiting a parent willing to dedicate time to coaching a team, approximately 17 intermediate aged youth would not have played organized hockey. This is just one of the ways Charles goes above and beyond what it means to be a volunteer.

His involvement this year includes being the Head Coach of the Gloucester-Cumberland Girls Hockey Intermediate 1 House League team and Assistant Coach with the Ottawa Intermediate “A” team. He is also the Discipline Director for the Metro Ottawa Girls Hockey League helping to ensure that young women playing hockey in our city are treated fairly. For many years he also held the position of President of the Gloucester-Cumberland Girls Hockey Association.

Charles’ influence in keeping today’s youth active and healthy in a positive sports environment is instrumental in the development of our future sports leaders. He is a very deserving recipient of this award.
