Green Brook Hockey Club: Fall 2008 Playoffs
![]() |
What an exciting playoff we had in our U8 Atom Division!! 4 teams battled furiously, and it was obvious from the start that regular season records didn't really matter - all our U8 teams had a shot at winning it all!! In First Round action, the Falcon Safety Products Bruins, who finished in first place in the regular season, faced off against the Boretz Orthopaedic Vipers. The first half of the game was an amazing struggle that featured scoreless battle, as the two goalies, Thomas Rau of the Bruins and Eric Isaacs of the Vipers, really put on a show to make it a 0-0 score at halftime. In the second half, the Bruins finally broke the scoreless tie, as Justin Todtenkopf netted 3 goals for a natural hat trick, and that was it - final score: Bruins 3, Vipers 0, as the Bruins won a trip to the Championship Round. In the other first round game, the excitement continued as the Karate America Checkers faced the Garwood Metal Red Wings. Michael Brady got the Checkers on the board first in this one with his first goal of the playoffs, just 2 minutes into the game, but the Red Wings had the answer, as Nathan Crystal would score his first goal of the playoffs as well for a 1-1 tie. Christian Hoppeler would give the Checkers the lead back at 2-1 with about 6 minutes left in the first half, but within the last 3 minutes of the half the red Wings notched 3 goals, 2 by Nathan Crystal and one by Tommy McNulty, and by halftime the Red Wings had themselves a 4-2 lead. They would add to that lead, as Nathan Crystal notched his fourth of the game for a 5-2 Red Wings lead. But the Checkers would mount a comeback, which started with Jared Venutolo's goal with 12 minutes left in the game. That was followed by Michael Brady's second goal at 7:45 left to make it suddenly a 5-4 game. Jared Venutolo would then get the game tying goal, as he scored with 5:15 left to tie the game at 5-5. With just a minute and a half left, Michael Brady was the hero for the Checkers, as he completed his hat trick for a 6-5 Checkers win to advance them to the Championship round. Assists in the game went to Tommy McNulty, who had 3, and Ryan Boettcher, both of the Red Wings, while Jared Venutolo and Michael Brady both got 2 for the Checkers. What a thrilling game!!
In the 3rd Place Game between the Red Wings and the Vipers, Jessie Shapiro and Nathan Crystal got the only goals of the first half for a 2-0 Red Wings lead. They would increase the lead to 3-0 in the second half, on Nathan Crystal's second goal, but right after that, Charlie Kuzmenko put two on the board for the Vipers to make it a 3-2 game. Jonny Chang's goal would give the Red Wings a 4-2 lead, but that was answered by 2 more goals by Charlie Kuzmenko, who got the game tied at 4-4 with 11 minutes left. But amazingly, Charlie was not done. He would score yet another one with 6:42 left for a 5-4 Vipers lead, but the Red Wings battled back and tied the game just one minute later, as Nathan Crystal completed his hat trick for a 5-5 tie. Then, with just 2:30 left in the game Charlie Kuzmenko went to work again and scored yet again for a 6-5 Vipers lead. Just for good measure, Charlie would add 2 more goals in the last 21 seconds of the game, and his incredible performance of 8 goals one period, which is certainly a record, gave the Vipers the 3rd Place trophy, with an 8-5 victory. The only assist in the game went to Jessie Shapiro, who had one for the Red Wings. The Championship Game featured an exciting matchup between the Checkers vs the Bruins. This one was yet another tough-fought battle, as the only goal scored in the first half was one by Jacob Seif to give the Checkers a 1-0 lead at the half. That lead would widen in the second half, as Michael Brady scored two goals for a 3-0 Checkers advantage. But with just 5 minutes remaining, the Bruins would mount a comeback. Justin Martin scored on a pass from Justin Todtenkopf, then Justin Todtenkopf scored a goal himself, and suddenly it was a 3-2 game. But the Checkers' Michael Brady would have the final say, as he netted his third and fourth goals of the day, and the Checkers, who finished in third place in the regular season, came away with the Championship trophy. What a great and fun season it was for all our Fall 2008 U8 division players, coaches, and parents!! Thanks guys!!

Our U10 Mite Division had 5 very tough and motivated teams, all of whom put their best effort out to thry and win the top prize in the division in our Fall 2008 playoffs. In First Round action, the Event Capital Mohawks faced the Performance Dynamics Predators. The winner would join 3 other teams, who got a First Round bye, in the Second Round. Sean Conway scored to give the Mohawks the first lead of the game, but the Predators scored two straight, one by Anthony Kuzmenko and one by Xavier Deida, for a 2-1 lead. But in the last minute of play in the first half, Brian Dempsey and Sean Conway scored two for the Mohawks, who grabbed a 3-2 lead at halftime. In the second half, Danny Russomanno scored to tie the game for the Predators, but the Mohawks responded to that with three unanswered goals of their own, two by Sean Conway, and one by Brian Dempsey for a 6-3 Mohawks lead. Another goal by Danny Russomanno would cut the lead to 6-4, but that was it, as Sean Conway scored his fifth goal of the game to secure the 7-4 victory for the Mohawks, who advanced to the next round. Assists in the game went to the Predators' Jordan Green, who had 2, Xavier Deida, and Anthony Kuzmenko, and to the Mohawks' Sean Conway, who had 2, Brina Dempsey, who had 2, Victoria Stevens, and Philip Ciliberto.
In Second Round action, the Shogun 22 Wolfpack faced off against the Abbey Total Floor & Carpet Lightning. After the first 13 minutes of the first half produced no goals for either side, the Lightning suddenly struck for four goals in the last 7 minutes, two by Tyler Kulisz, and one by Jordan Hardgrove and Dylan Betz, as the Lightning carried a 4-0 lead into halftime. The Wolfpack had ideas of a comeback, as Christian Liebau scored for them to make it a 4-1 game, but that was all she wrote, as Tyler Kulisz, Luke Harding, and Dylan Betz added goals in the final 5 minutes for a 7-1 victory for the Lightning, who advanced to the Championship Game. Assists in the game went to the Lightning's Zachary Heifitz, who had 2, Jordan Hardgrove, and Dylan Betz, while Mathew Piro got one for the Wolfpack. In the other second Round Game, we had the Pizza brothers Penguins, who finished in first place in the regular season, going against the Event Capital Mohawks. This one was a real defensive struggle, as each team was held to one goal in the first half, scored by Ryan Martins of the Penguins, and Brian Dempsey of the Mohawks. In the second half, the Penguins got two early goals by Adrian Pinzon, and made it hold up, as the goalies, Christian Departo of the Mohawks and Mathew Altomare of the Penguins, shut the door the rest of the way. Assists in the game went to the Penguins' Kevin Ewald, Ryan Ewald, and Paul Roushdy, while Sean Conway got one for the Mohawks. Final score: Penguins 3, Mohawks 1.
The U10 division 3rd Place Game saw the Wolfpack square off against the Mohawks. Spencer Savulich got the Mohawks on the board first for a 1-0 lead, but then Jake Tunison scored two for the Wolfpack, who had a 2-1 lead at the half. Jake would score another one for a natural hat trick early in the second half for a 3-1 Wolfpack lead, but Brian Dempsey scored for the Mohawks with 8:53 left to make it a 3-2 game. Zach Giamundo would score to give the Wolfpack a 4-2 lead as the game headed into its final minutes. Brian Dempsey would score again for the Mohawks with 1:44 left to make it a 4-3 game, but the Wolfpack held on to win the 3rd Place trophy by a score of 4-3. Assists in the game went to Mike DeMarco, Mathew Piro, Christian Liebau, and Jake Tunison of the Wolfpack, while Philip Ciliberto notched one for the Mohawks. In the Championship Game, the Penguins and the Lightning, who finished first and second in the regular season, who finally face off against each other to decide who would get the top prize. After the Penguins' Ryan Martins got an early goal in this one, both goalies, Mathew Altomare of the Penguins and Lauren MacWhinney of the Lightning, clamped down on the scoring. But with about 3 and half minutes left in the first half, the Penguins' Adrian Pinzon struck for 2 goals and the Penguins had themselves a 3-0 halftime lead. In the second half, Ryan Ewald of the Penguins would score the only goal of the half, as Mathew Altomare would be the only goalie in the league to post a shutout in the Fall 08 playoffs, to help lead his team to the Championship. Assists in the game went to Adrian Pinzon, Ryan Martins, and Paul Roushdy. Final score: Penguins 4, Lightning 0. Thanks to all of our Fall 2008 U10 Mite Division players, parents, and coaches, for what was an awesome season!!

Our U13 Squirt Division was certainly loaded with alot of talent for our Fall 2008 season, as six teams gave it their all in a quest for the division championship! In First Round action, the Walls & Doors Blackhawks faced off against the Qualcare Ducks in what would turn out to be a tough battle! Right up until the last minute of the first period, the goalies - Jeffrey Isaacs of the Ducks and Tyler Reedman of the Blackhawks, kept the teams off the scoreboard. But with a little over a minute left in the half, Jaysen Correa put the Ducks ahead to give them a 1-0 halftime lead. In the second half, Sam Shapiro would tie the game for the Blackhawks at 1-1 with his first goal of the playoffs. As time wound down to the last 6 and a half minutes, Luke Rizzoli put the Blackhawks ahead as he scored his first of the playoffs for a 2-1 lead. With time winding down and the goalie pulled for the Ducks, the Blackhawks would score again with just 25 seconds left for a seemingly safe 3-1 lead. But the Ducks wouldn't give up, as Chris Villa scored with just 3 seconds remaining to make it 3-2. The final faceoff was won by the Blackhawks, who advanced to the second Round with a hard fought, 3-2 win. Assists in the game went to Kyle Bickerton, who had 2 for the Ducks, and to Michael Pastuszak, Connor Dempsey, and Ben Neri of the Blackhawks. In the other First Round game, the Landau Consulting Phantoms clashed with the Earth - Thebault Sharks. A.J. Vischetti got the Sharks on the board early, and Tyler Hargrove and Bailey Green added goals later on in the period, as the Sharks built up a 3-0 lead by halftime. Kevin Greenman would score the first goal of the second half for the Phantoms to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Sharks' Bailey Green answered that with his goal to make it a 4-1 game. But the Phantoms battled back in this one, as Ryan Chang notched two goals with 11:27 and 10:12 left to suddenly make it a 4-3 game. With 8:48 left Tyler Hardgrove put the Sharks back up by two, as his goal gave them a 5-3 lead. But back came the Phantoms again, as Ryan Chang completed his hat trick with a little over 5 minutes left and the lead was back down to one goal at 5-4. But the Sharks would control things the rest of the way, as Bailey Green would notch one more goal for the hat trick, to give the Sharks a 6-4 win to advance to Round Two. Assists in the game went to Kevin Greenman, Michael Quense, and Noah Murphy of the Phantoms, and to the Sharks' Tyler Hardgrove, who had 3, Sean Mulqueen, and Bailey Green.
In Second Round action, The Sharks tangled with the regular season first place team, the Metro Wire Rope River Rats. This was another great defensive battle, as neither team scored in the first 11 minutes of the game. Then, Corey Paltjon broke through for the River Rats with a goal for a 1-0 lead, but that vanished just over the next 4 minutes, when A.J. Vischetti put two goals in the net for the Sharks for a 2-1 lead. The River Rats would get the equalizer with just 2:28 left in the half, as Kyle Celeste scored to tie the game at 2-2. It looked as though that's what the halftime score would be, but with just 45 seconds left in the first half, Tyler Hardgrove notched one for the Sharks to lead them into halftime with a 3-2 advantage. Things got even more defensive in the second half, as the goalies, John Carl Gibbons of the River Rats, and Al Nieliwocki of the Sharks, held off just about any scoring chances there were in the second half. But with time winding down to the last 4 minutes of the game, Bailey Green got one for the Sharks, who went on to win the game and advance to the final with a 4-2 victory. Assists in the game went to the Sharks' Bailey Green, who had 2, Tyler Hardgrove, and A.J. Vischetti, and to the River Rats' Corey Paltjon. In the other Second Round game, the Blackhawks faced off against the Green Brook F.O.P. Lodge #23 Titans. After a scoreless first 7 minutes of the game, the Blackhawks would strike for two goals in the span of a minute, as Sam Robinson and Zach Iverson netted goals for a 2-0 Blackhawks first half lead. The 'hawks just kept it into the second half, as Ben Neri, Zach Iverson, and Sam Shapiro would score goals within a two minute span early in the period for a commanding 5-0 lead. Ben Neri would add one for good measure with 6 minutes left, but the Titans broke the shutout with just 14 seconds left on a goal by Jimmy DiGiorgio. Assists in the game went to the Blackhawks' Ben Neri and Zach Iverson, both of whom had 2 each, Jack Benham, Connor Dempsey, and Sam Robinson, while the lone assist for the Titans went to Justin Capella. Final score: Blackhawks 6, Titans 1.
In the 3rd Place Trophy Game between the River Rats and Titans, Will Hughes scored the first goal of the game for the River Rats, but the Titans would answer with three goals of their own before the half ended, as Steven Sarnowski netted two goals and Justin Capella had one to give the Titans a 3-1 lead at the half. But it was all River Rats in the second half, as Corey Paltjon got two, and Cody Sorrentino and Kyle Celeste got one each to give the River Rats a 5-3 win for the 3rd Place trophy. Assists in the game went to the Rats' Cody Sorrentino, who had 2, Kyle Celeste, and Corey Paltjon, while Titans players Billy Stevens, Jimmy DiGiorgio, and Justin Capella had one each. Then we had the game for the big prize, the Championship Game between the Blackhawks and the Sharks. In this one, we had yet another tough defensive struggle, as the goalies, Tyler Reedman of the Blackhawks and Al Nieliwocki of the Sharks, played great in net for their teams! The Blackhawks would strike first in this one though, as Luke Rizzoli and Sam Shapiro scored goals for a 2-0 'hawks lead. That was our score going into the final half of the U13 season. Ben Neri then scored a huge goal for the Blackhawks with 9:15 left in the second half for a 3-0 lead. Joey McNulty would score for the Sharks to cut the lead to 3-1 with 4:20 left, but that was it, as the Blackhawks completed their three round march to the championship. Assists in the game went to Zach Iverson and Connor Dempsey of the Blackhawks. Final score: Blackhawks 3, Sharks 1. What a great season all six teams in the U13 division provided for everyone for our Fall 2008 season. Thanks guys!!

What an incredible season our Fall 2008 season was in our U17 Bantam Division!! The regular season proved the division to be one of the most evenly balanced divisions in league history, as only 5 points separated the top team from the bottom. In First Round action, the Just Hockey Rangers faced off against the Sign - A - Rama Devils. The Rangers won the regular season first place spot, but with the closeness of the division, everyone knew that just about anything could happen in the playoffs! The Devils got on the board first in this one, as Nick Perrette notched the game's first two goals for a 2-0 Devils first half lead. The Rangers had the answer though, as Robert Lally scored two of his own to knot the score at 2-2 at the half. Neither team scored during the first 10 minutes of the second half, but then the Rangers broke through on a goal by Frankie Buonvicino to take a 3-2 lead. As the clock ran down to 6:40 left in the game, Anthony Parascondola added another one for the Rangers, and suddenly the Rangers had themselves a 4-2 lead late in the game. The clock wound down to under 3 minutes left and the Devils chances seemed to be slipping away, but then Damien Quense scored with 2:37 left to suddenly make it a 4-3 game. The teams battled tenaciously the last couple of minutes, and with just 37 seconds left the miracle the were hoping for happened, as Jimmy Sammon notched the game tying goal to make it a 4-4 game. The teams then headed into sudden death overtime. Just one minute into OT, Justin Turlip stole the puck and headed right to the net to score the game winner, as the Devils won it in OT with an incredible comeback win, 5-4. Assists in the game went to Damien Quense, who had 2, Patrick Sammon, and Justin Turlip, from the Devils, while the Rangers assists came from Frankie Buonvicino, who had 2, and Joshua Zeloof. This classic game was followed by yet another one in the U17 First Round, as the D & M Trophies Chiefs faced the Oksenhorn Jewelers Drifters. The Chiefs got an early lead on goals by Georgie Margelis, Nick Martin, and Matt Todtenkopf for a 3-0 lead. The Drifters battled back with two goals of their own, both scored by Billy Lester, and suddenly it was back to a one goal game at 3-2, Chiefs. As the period wound down, Colin Bradley widened the Chief lead with a goal to make it 5-3, but the Drifters kept it close with a goal by Logan Green to close the gap again to down to one at 5-4. Just before the half ended, Georgie Margelis scored for the Chiefs, who took a 5-3 lead into the half. The Drifters would continue to stay close, though, as they would score on a goal by Dylan Damato to make it 5-4. But as the period rolled on, the Chiefs continued to try and take command, as two more Chief goals, scored by Georgie Margelis and Colin Bradley, made it a 7-4 lead. As time wound down to the last 7 minutes, things seemed in control for the Chiefs. The Drifters, though, were still not done, as they mounted a fierce comeback in the closing minutes of the game. Logan Green would score, then Josh Ramsey a couple of minutes later, and suddenly it was a 7-6 game. The Chiefs tried to finish off their opponent, but the Drifters finally got things even, as Billy Lester scored with just a minute and a half left to tie the game at 7-7 and send it into overtime. The two teams battled in OT, but the goalies - Steven Isaacs for the Drifters and Al Nieliwocki for the Chiefs, kept both teams off the scoreboard, so we went to a Shootout. The Chiefs would finally emerge victorious, as Colin Bradley netted the only Shootout goal, while Al Nieliwocki stopped the final shot, and the Chiefs advanced to the final with a tough-fought victory by an 8-7 score. What a game!
In the 3rd Place Game, the Drifters faced the Rangers in what would turn out to be yet another thrilling game for the U17 playoffs. The first 10 minutes of the first half were scoreless, but the Rangers then struck first on a goal by Farris Ghanin for a 1-0 lead. But as the half was ending, the Drifters took a quick one goal lead on goals by Billy Lester and Stephen DeTorres for a 2-1 halftime edge. Midway through the second half, George Aller then tied the game for the Rangers at 2-2, setting things up for a dramatic finish. With time running down to about 3 minutes left in the game, Billy Lester would give the drifters the lead again at 3-2 with a goal, but just 30 seconds later, the Rangers answered that with a goal by Frankie Buonvicino, and we had a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation. The OT period was scoreless, as the goalies were tough, and then we went to a shootout. What a thrilling end to a career it was for George Aller of the Rangers, who had the only 2 assists of the game and who would score the only shootout goal in what would be the final game of his career, as Nick Coco would also stop the final shot as well, to lead the Rangers to a 4-3 shootout win. This game was also the third OT game out of the four U17 playoff games. The Championship game was yet another close won, as the Devils faced the Chiefs for the top prize. Nick Perrette got the the Devils off to a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the game, but that was answered a short time later by Nick Martin of the Chiefs, who tied the game at 1-1. The third "Nick" goal in a row was scored soon thereafter, as Nick Perrette notched his second of the game for the Devils, who recliamed the lead at 2-1. The Devils then got a key goal with 7:35 left in the first half, as Jimmy Sammon scored to put them up by two at 3-1. Jimmy's cousin, Patrick Sammon, would add to the lead with just under 4 minutes left, as his goal gave the Devils a commanding 4-1 halftime lead. In the second half, defense and goaltending was the name of the game, as neither team could mount much in terms of scoring. The goaltenders, Tyler Reedman of the Chiefs and Kurt Vivian of the Devils, turned away chance after chance in the half, as only one goal, scored by Colin Bradley with 3:48 left, was scored the rest of the game. The Devils, who finished in fourth place in the regular season, wound up as division champs by playing tough defensive hockey despite having no goals in the second half of the Championship Game. Final score: Devils 4, Chiefs 2. Assists in the game went to the Devils' Justin Turlip and the Chiefs' Karl Koliver. Thanks to all our Fall 2008 U17 teams and players for providing the league with one of the most closely matched and exciting divisions ever!!
