Green Brook Hockey Club: Spring 2006 Playoffs
![]() |
What an unbelievably exciting and close division our U8 Division was in our Spring 2006 season!! The playoffs would definitely prove this, as no clear favorite emerged going into any round and a team that struggled a bit during the regular season would have the final say as to the division championship. In the first round, the Shake-A-Paw Flyers squared off against the Atlantic Fence Wolfpack. The Flyers got off to a good start, as Alek Minishak scored and Kevin Greenman had a natural hat trick to give the Flyers a commanding 4-0 lead well into the 2nd half. Jimmy DiGiorgio scored for the Wolfpack to cut it to 4-1, but that would be it, as Alek Minishak added another and Brian "Bubba" Reiss scored for the Flyers to seal a solid 6-1 victory. The other first round game featured the regular season first place Lily Pad Ponds Blazers vs the Cuts Fitness For Men Stars. What a defensive struggle this one was, as neither team scored any goals in the first half! The goalies, Lauren MacWhinney for the Stars and Brian Dempsey for the Blazers were definitely on their game for sure. The Stars would finally break through for a goal with 15 minutes left in the 2nd half as Ryan Nieves notched one. Just 3 minutes later the Stars would take a 2-0 lead on a goal scored by Harrison Napell. The goalies dominated the rest of the way, as no more goals were scored and Lauren got the shutout for the Stars to lead them into the Championship Game.
In final round action, the battle for the 3rd Place trophy featured the Blazers vs the Wolfpack. Brian Coelho of the Wolfpack scored the game's first goal, but with a little under 8 minutes left in the second half the Blazers' Jordan Green tied the game at 1-1. With under 3 minutes left in the half, the Wolfpack struck for 2 goals, scored by Jimmy DiGiorgio and Benjamin Gomes and the Wolfpack had themselves a 3-1 lead going into halftime. Brian Coelho added another one early in the second half for a 4-1 lead, but the Blazers cut it back to a 2 goal lead on a goal by J.T. Valley. But the Wolfpack rolled after that, scoring goals by Nick Coelho, Jack Benham, and Jimmy DiGiorgio, while J.T. Valley got his second of the game for the Blazers. The Wolfpack came away with a solid 7-3 for the 3rd place crown. The Championship Game was a classic battle between the Shake-A-Paw Flyers and the Cuts Fitness for Men Stars. Philip Ciliberto got the game's first goal for the Stars, but with 4 minutes left in the first half, the Flyers tied it at 1-1 on a goal by Anthony Kuzmenko. Kevin Greenman quickly gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead early in the second half with a goal, and then the defense and the goalies, Danny Farrell for the Flyers and Lauren MacWhinney for the Stars, dominated things as the Flyer clung to that 2-1 lead for the next 10 minutes. Kevin scored again with about 8 minutes left to give the Flyers some breathing room with a 3-1 lead, but then with just 2:16 left Philip Ciliberto scored his second of the game for the Stars. That set up a wild finish as the Stars tried desparately to tie it and the Flyers just wanted to hang on to that 3-2 lead. They did so, as the final seconds ticked off and the Flyers were the champs. What an exciting finish to a thrilling season for our U8 division!! Thanks to all our U8 players and parents!!

Our U10 Division, which was one of the most competitive divisions in our Spring 06 season, provided some major surprises and thrilling finishes to the season in the playoffs. In first round action, the regular season 4th place Watchung Fire Dept Senators faced off against the 5th place Green Brook F.O.P. Lodge #23 Hurricanes. The Hurricanes got off to a quick start as Stewart Lester scored 55 seconds into the game, while Robbie Campbell added 2 more goals in the first half and the lower seeded Hurricanes were off to a stunning 3-0 start. The Senators fought back though, as Tyler Hardgrove scored for the Senators with 2 1/2 minutes left in the first half to make it 3-1. In the second half, Bobby Bereheiko scored for the Senators to cut the lead to 3-2. That's where it stood when suddenly the lightning and rains came and the game had to be cut short. Final score: Hurricanes 3, Senators 2.
In second round action, the Metro Wire Rope Panthers took on the Appleton Electric Flames in a matchup of second place vs third place regular season teams. In the first half, Jessie Anson scored to give the Flames an early lead, but the Panthers would tie it before half time on a goal by Steven Weidlich. In the second half, the Panthers' Michael Gibbons would score twice for the only goals of the period, as the Panthers came away with a 3-1 victory. Both goalies, Jarad Jirari for the Flames and John Carl Gibbons for the Panthers were great in this one, keeping the game a very low scoring one. In the other second round game. The Hurricanes were back to face off against the regular season first place Pizza Brothers Titans. What a great battle this one was! Will Hughes scored one in the first half for the Hurricanes to give them the lead, but Chris Lubrano would tie it for the Titans just before the end of the first half. The second half saw the Hurricanes jump out to a 3-1 lead just a couple of minutes in on goals by Robbie Campbell and Will Hughes (his second of the day). The Titans would battle back though, as Steven Sarnowski scored for them to make it 3-2. Then, with a little over 8 minutes left, Chris Lubrano notched the game-tying goal for the Titans to make it a 3-3 game. But just a minute and a half later Conner Dempsey scored to make it 4-3 Hurricanes. Both sides battled back and forth in the last few minutes, but the goalies, Tyler Reedman for the Hurricanes and Michael Pastuszak for the Titans, shut the door on any further scoring and the Hurricanes had themselves the upset 4-3 victory. That set up a very interesting final round of U10 Division action.
The 3rd Place consolation Game saw the Titans take on the Flames. The Flames got on the board first in this one as Ryan Sloop scored about 7 minutes into the game. The Titans would answer, though, with goals from Eric Harding and Steven Sarnowski to take a 2-1 lead into half time. The Titans would extend that lead in the second half with 2 more goals, scored by Chris Lubrano and Steven Sarnowski - his second of the game. The goalies had a great game, as Michael Pastuszak for the Titans and Jarad Jirari for the Flames kept the game low scoring, with the Titans prevailing by a 4-1 score. In the U10 Championship game, which featured the Hurricanes vs the Panthers, goaltending and defense were the name of the game!! Jayson Correa got the games first goal 4 1/2 minutes into the game, but the Hurricanes would tie it on Alexa Lipke's goal for a 1-1 score. That's the way it remained at half time and, in fact, throughout the rest of regulation, as goalies John Carl Gibbons of the Panthers and Tyler Reedman of the Hurricanes shut the door. It was on to overtime!! Despite some great chances on both sides, the goalies still remained tough and overtime did not produce a winner. It was time for a shootout to decide the championship!! In the shootout, it was all Hurricanes, as Robbie Campbell and Will Hughes scored the only goals and the Hurricanes completed the most incredible finish to their season!! They could only manage 1 tie during the regular season, but put it all together for the playoffs. Congratulations to the Hurricanes and to the U10 Division on a great season!!

Our U13 Division featured 6 very hungry teams this season and what a great finish these guys provided!! In first round action, the Oksenhorn Jewelers Maple Leafs took on the Qualcare Sharks. The Sharks bolted out to a 3-0 lead on a goal by Justin Turlip and 2 by Carl Girgus. Brian Weiniger would answer for the Maple Leafs with 2 goals of his own, but the Sharks had a 3-2 halftime lead. Brian was still on a roll, as he scored the first 3 goals of the second half to give the Maple Leafs a 5-3 lead. The Sharks weren't done though. After the 2 teams traded goals by Justin Turlip (Sharks) and Bryan Serge (Maple Leafs), the Sharks came back and tied the score on 2 goals by Brandon McSorley. That's the way it stayed until the last few ticks of the clock, when, with just 14 seconds left, Brian Weiniger scored the game winner for the Sharks. What a thriller! In the other first round game, the JRC Service River Rats took on the Green Brook Republican Club Penguins. The Penguins took control in the first half on a pair of goals by Nick Martin plus goals by Vinny Martin, Sam Wolfson, and Billy Stevens. The River Rats had 2 of their own, both scored by Joshua Katzen, but trailed at the half, 5-2. The Penguins would stay in command, as the second half saw a pair of goals by Scott Schwefringhaus and one by Jesse Zeigler, while Corey Paltjon scored a pair for the River Rats. The Penguins prevailed by a final score of 8-4.
The second round featured the Joe and Mary's Parrot Place Vipers facing off against the Maple Leafs. The Leafs got an early goal from Derek Cumminsky, but Frankie Buonvicino tied it for the Vipers a minute later. Michael Sullivan and Brian Weiniger scored the next 2 for the Leafs but Anthony Parascondola closed the gap to 3-2 with a goal for the Vipers. Brian and Anthony scored goals again to make it a 4-3 game, but then things started rolling in the Leafs favor. After a 5-3 half time lead, the Leafs scored 6 of the next 7 goals in the game. Bryan Serge had a pair of goals, and Derek Cumminsky completed the hat trick for the Leafs. Peter Chang would add 2 goals and Michelle Valley one, but this one went to the Maple Leafs by a decisive 11-6 margin for a trip to the Championship Game. The Watchung Electric Scorpions then took on the Penguins, and immediately established an early lead on a pair of goals by Ryan Chang and one by Richard Hunt for a 3-0 halftime lead. Damien Quense, Sean Kenny and Richard Hunt would score to widen the lead in the second half for the Scorpions to 6-0, before Sam Wolfson and Nick Martin got the final 2 goals of the game for the Penguins. The 6-2 victory gave the Scorpions a ticket to the Championship Game.
The Penguins and Vipers locked horns for the 3rd Place trophy game. The Pens established the early lead in this one as Scott Schwefringhaus and Sam Wolfson both notched 2 a pair of goals each while Nick Martin added one also and the Penguins had a commanding 5-0 lead at halftime. But the Vipers would battle back! Anthony Parascondola got the Vipers on the board and Frankie Buonvicino had a pair of goals for the Vipers. But Sam Wolfson completed the hat trick for the Pens and the score was 6-3 Penguins, before Zach Iverson would add one last tally for the Vipers. The Penguins took the 3rd Place trophy by a 6-4 count. The Championship Game, between the Maple Leafs and Scorpions, was a dandy one indeed!! After Brian Weiniger got the Leafs on the board with the game's first goal, Sean Kenny and Ryan Chang scored for a 2-1 Scorpions lead. Brian would tie it with a goal for the Leafs, but Sean Kenny put the Scorpions in the lead again with a goal to make it 3-2 Scorpions. But this was a real see-saw game! Once again the lead changed hands, as the Maple Leafs scored 2 goals, one by Jenna Abbatemarco and one by Brian Weiniger, to take a 4-3 lead into halftime. In the second half the Scorpions tied it again on a goal by Richard Hunt, only to see the lead go back to the Leafs on Brian Weiniger's 4th goal of the game with about 10 minutes left. But - you guessed it - the Scorpions tied it yet again on Ryan Chang's second goal of the game and the score stood at 5-5 with a little over 8 minutes left. With about 6 minutes left it was Brian Weiniger again that struck for the Leafs and once again gave them the lead. Both teams battled furiously in the last few minutes and the goalies, Laura Sammon for the Maple Leafs and sean Woods of the Scorpions, faced a fierce attack by both teams. But the Leafs clung mightily to their lead and hung on for the 6-5 Championship win. The Leafs completed what was a miracle comeback for the season, as they spent much of the first half of the Spring 06 season near the bottom of the standings. What a great and entertaining season by our U13 Division. Thanks guys!!

Our U17 was certainly a competitive one throughout the regular season, with much of the standings only resolved right near the end of the season. First Round action pitted the D & M Trophies Rockets against the Coldwell Banker Devils. The Devils got the jump in this one as John Fiorilla scored for them 12 minutes into the first half. Bu the Rockets' Nick Abbatemarco quickly tied it a minute later and the game was a 1-1 deadlock at halftime. In the second half, Nick Abbatemarco got on a roll for the Rockets as he scored 3 goals in a row and Pat Sammon scored one as well to give the Rockets a 5-1 lead. Mike DiPaolo would add one for the Devils to make it a 5-2 game, but that's how ity stayed, as the goalies, Steven Isaacs (substitute) for the Devils and Anthony Parascondola for the Rockets, shut the door on any further scoring.
In the Second Round, the Carrabba's Rangers faced the Andrews Quality Tree Care Wild. The Rangers' Jimmy Rizzolo struck first with a goal less than 5 minutes into the game, but the Wild would tie it on a Matt Hicks goal just before the end of the first half. The Rangers would take the lead in this tough-fought battle, as Craig Standish scored just 4 and half minutes into the second half. About 4 minutes later, Anthony Buonvicino scored and extended the Rangers lead to 3-1. Both teams fought hard in this one and the goalies, Brian Smith for the Wild and Andrew Todtenkopf of the Rangers shut the scoring down after the Rangers got the 3-1 lead. The rains came with about 8 minutes left in the game and that was it, as the Rangers notched a 5-2 win to advance to the Championship Game. In the other Second Round Game, The Rockets faced off against the regular season first place team, King George Chiropractic Ducks. This one was a fierce battle, with the Rockets taking an early 2-0 lead with the first goal just 26 seconds into the game by Pat Sammon and another one by Jon Suriano just one minute later. But the Ducks got their own offense started, with 3 straight goals, two by Brandon Lipke and one by Billy Lester, to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Rockets fought back and tied it on a goal by Marco Serino. But with 12 minutes left Nick Perrette scored to put the Ducks back in the lead at 4-3. The two teams battled mightily the rest of the way, but the Ducks added late goals by Brendan Woods and another one by Nick Perrette to secure the win and move on to the Championship round.
In final round action, the Rockets battled against the Wild for the 3rd Place trophy. Keith Hoerburger got the Wild on the board first in this one, but Nick Abbatemarco tied it at 1-1 for the Rcokets. The lead see-sawed and the Wild had a 2-1 lead on a goal by Michael Johnson, only to have the game tied on a goal by Anthony Parascondola, just before the half. In the second half, the Rockets once again had the advatantage, as Pat Sammon gave them a 3-2 lead just 25 seconds in. That's how it stayed until, with 9:44 left, Andrew Serge scored for the Wild and the game was tied again at 3-3. but it was all Rockets after that. Nick Abbatemarco scored two more goals to complete his hat trick and Jon Suriano scored one to give the Rockets a 6-3 victory and the 3rd Place trophy. Next, it was time to decide the U17 Championship between the Rangers and the Ducks. the Ducks got the early jump in this one, as Brandon Lipke scored two goals in the first minute and a half of the game. Craig Standish got one back for the Rangers, but Brendan Woods scored for the Ducks to get the two goal lead back, making it 3-1. but with just 26 seconds left on the first half, Stephen DeTorres notched his first of the game for the Rangers to cut the Ducks lead to 3-2 at halftime. In the second half, after Rohan Gokhale scored to give the Ducks a 4-2 advantage, Stephen DeTorres scored his second of the game for the Rangers and the score stood at 4-3. Once again the Ducks got another two goal advantage, as Brandon Lipke completed his hat trick on the day to make it 5-3. But the Rangers refused to quit and Kyle Van Decker scored for them to once again cut the lead down to a one goal, 5-4 lead. But suddenly the Ducks quacked loudly and scored the game's last two goals, one by Brendan Woods and one by Michel Lester and had themselves the Championship crown. They also did something that has proven to be quite difficult in recent years, which is finish in first place during the regular season AND in the playoffs. Congratulations to the Ducks and great season U17 players!!
