Green Brook Hockey Club: FAQ's
What is the Green Brook Hockey Club? (GBHC)
The Green Brook Hockey Club (GBHC)is an instructional inline hockey league for kids aged 5 through 17. Players are assigned to teams in their age group and play a regular season and playoff schedule. Seasons are Spring and Fall, with open hockey in the Summer. The rink is located behind the Green Brook Middle School off of Jefferson Road in Green Brook, NJ.
What type of equipment is required for our players?
The type of equipment that is required for our players is as follows:HECC approved helmet (helmet must have HECC approval sticker on it),hockey gloves, elbow pads, knee & shin pads, roller blade skates, hockey stick with proper thickness, mouthpiece, and athletic supporter & cup for boys. Also, while it is not a requirement, it is highly recommended that players wear hockey shoulder pads to minimize any risk of shoulder injury. Players are to also bring their own water bottles for each game. Please check our sponsor list to find some great sports shops that can provide you with all your inline hockey equipment needs.
How safe is this sport and do injuries occur alot?
As long as each player has the league required equipment on, the games are very safe. Minor injuries sometimes occur, but the utmost care and attention are provided when this happens. In case of any emergency, our coaches and staff have been instructed on how to handle these situations.
How rough is the sport and is there checking?
Our league is definitely a non-checking one, and rough, physical play, especially in our younger divisions, is not tolerated. Any player causing unsportmanlike play will be penalized and, if need be, ejected from the game. The same goes for any player that violates our code of conduct.
How long is each game?
Each of our games consists of 2 twenty minute periods. The clock runs continuously through each period with the exception of the last 2 minutes of each period, where a ref's whistle will stop the clock providing that the score is either tied or a one goal difference. The clock also stops for any player injuries which may occur. In the event of a tie, there is no overtime, except in the playoffs. In the playoffs, in the event of a tie there is a five minute overtime period. If the game is still tied after that, then we go to a sudden death shootout. If you think that could never happen, just check out our "This date in GBHC History" section!!
What is the role of parents in the league?
Parents, besides supplying registration fees and equipment for their child, are encouraged to volunteer for various league activities such as coaching, assistant coaching, promotional activities, concession stand, rink maintenance, and other things to help our league grow and, at the same time, be a rewarding experience for our kids. Above all, parents are asked to maintain a high level of conduct, class, and sportsmanship. Parents now must strictly follow a code of conduct adopted by the GBHC Board of Directors. Following this code of conduct is essential to the success of our league and anything contrary to this will not be tolerated. There are now laws in place in the state of New Jersey requiring parents to adhere to a specified code of conduct during games. This code of conduct will be posted at the rink and be strictly enforced by the league. All parents are asked to exhibit behavior that our players can be proud of and, in fact, learn from. In general, our parents have shown a great sense of responsibilty which has led, in large part, to the success of our league.
How do I sign up for concession stand duty?
A great way to fulfill your work bond requirement is to sign up for volunteer work at the concession stand. You can sign up for work at the concession stand by filling in a specific time slot on the concession stand timesheet. Just go to the concession stand and ask about it and simply fill in any remaining slots on the timesheet you'd be available for.
When are games and practices usually scheduled?
During the Spring and Fall seasons games are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays. The U8 and U10 Divisions play on Saturday, while the U13 and U17 Divisions generally play on Sunday. If a particular game is rained out, it could be rescheduled for a Saturday or Sunday. Coaches schedule their own team's practice times. This is done after each coach is advised of rink availability and coaches are then responsible for contacting parents about scheduled practices.
Is the league limited to just kids in the Green Brook area?
No way! Kids from anywhere can sign up in our league. While there is certainly a Green Brook community element to our league and a good number of our kids do live in Green Brook, kids from all other towns are welcome to join! We have a number of kids in our league from other towns like Watchung, The Plainfields, Middlesex, Piscataway, and from towns even as far away as Skillman and Verona!!
Is this league just for boys?
Absolutely not!! Some of our best players in the league are girls, so if you know any girls who may be interested, by all means tell them our league will be a fun experience for them.
How good a skater/player does my child have to be?
All skill levels are acceptable in our league. Yes, even if your child barely knows how to skate he/she will learn some fundamentals of both skating and hockey skills. Many of our coaches can tell alot of great stories of progress with so many of our kids in the league over the last couple of years!! So if your child is a beginner in either skating or hockey, this is a great place to start!!
What's the best way to get to the rink?
Route 22 is the best starting point when it comes to rink directions. Simply take Route 22 east or west, depending upon what direction you're coming from and get off at the exit for Rock Avenue. After getting off Route 22, continue about a quarter mile and make a right turn onto Greenbrook Road. Go about a half mile, then make a left onto Jefferson Road. Go about a quarter mile and turn left into the parking lot of the Green Brook Middle School. Proceed to the lot behind the school and you'll be there at the rink! There are other ways of getting there, but this is perhaps the most common.
Are there rules concerning coach and parent conduct?
Without question. Rules of fan/parent behavior are posted at the rink and we encourage our fans and parents to constantly review these and make sure you follow the rules of conduct. Failure to adhere to these rules may result in expulsion from the rink area and, if necessary, from the league. The same goes for our coaches, who also have a set of rules concerning their behavior behind the bench. While there have been some rare incidents requiring discipinary action over the past few seasons, we are happy to say that most of our coaches and parents have exhibited discipline that their children can be proud of. Still, violations of these rules of conduct will not be tolerated and any disciplinary action that might be necessary will occur at the discretion of the board of directors. Remember parents and coaches, this league is for our kids...let's never lose sight of that!!!
