Green Brook Hockey Club: Fall 2006 Playoffs
![]() |
In final round action, the Penguins faced off against the Sabres for the 3rd Place trophy in what turned out to be a close and exciting matchup. The Penguins struck first with 2 goals in a row by Dustin Demarsico in the first half to take a 2-0 lead. The Sabres answered, though, as Luke Harding and J.T. Valley scored goals to tie it at 2-2, which was the score at halftime. The two teams stayed deadlocked in the second half as both goalies, Stephen Seeley of the Penguins and Lauren MacWhinney of the Sabres, played great games in goal for their teams. But in the closing minutes of the game, Richie McNulty scored 2 goals for the Penguins, who won the game by a 4-2 score to win the 3rd place crown. That set up another great matchup for the Championship, as the Lightning faced the Wolfpack for the top spot. The Wolfpack got on the board right away on a goal by Jacob Wilinsky early in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. But the Lightning struck twice, though, and scored on 2 goals by Harrison Napell to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. They widened that lead to 3-1 on a goal by Alek Minishak. But things got closer again as Danny Russomanno got one for the Wolfpack to cut the lead to 3-2. The Wolfpack responded, though, on another goal by Alek Minishak to get the 2 goal lead back and make it a 4-2 game. The goalies for both teams, Corey Fewer of the Wolfpack and Danny Farrel of the Lightning were great down the stretch and didn’t allow any further scoring. That allowed the Lightning to come away with the U8 Division Championship and a very satisfying season. Thanks to all our U8 teams for a great Fall 06 season and for a great playoffs!!

U17 Division: The Ducks Keep On Quacking!!
![]() |
Our U17 division playoffs pitted 4 teams with a lot of determination against each other in 2 rounds of thrilling playoff action. In First Round action, the Andrews Tree Care Ducks squared off against the Coldwell Banker Wild. The Wild had the upper hand early in this one, as Craig Standish got them on the board for the 1-0 lead. Andrew Serge answered for the Ducks, though, to knot the score at 1-1. After Billy Lester scored to give the Wild the lead back, Andrew Serge repeated his heroics for the Ducks and knotted the score again, this time at 2-2 and that was the score at halftime. The second half opened up in the same fashion as both teams traded goals again with Billy Lester scoring for the Wild and Keith Hoerburger for the ducks to make it a 3-3 game. But then the Ducks’ Walter Quense got things rolling, as he scored 2 unanswered goals for a 5-3 Ducks lead. Colin Bradley scored to cut the Ducks lead to 5-4, but that was it, as the Ducks would score 3 unanswered goals, 2 by Walter Quense and one by Rohan Gokhale and went on to the 8-4 win to secure a spot in the Championship Game. In the other First Round game, the Oksenhorn Jewelers Scorpions faced the Watchung Electric Scorpions. The Rangers got the big jump early in this one, as they scored 3 unanswered goals, scored by Jonathan Suriano, Marco Serino and Mike LeFanto, for the 3-0 lead. The Scorpions managed to get one back just before the half, as Richard Hunt made it a 3-1 halftime score. The Rangers widened their lead to 4-1 with another Mike Lefanto goal in the second half. Patrick Sammon scored for the Scorpions to cut the lead to 4-2, but that’s as close as they would come, as Mike LeFanto completed his hat trick to the final score a 5-2 win for the Rangers to advance to the Championship game.
In Final Round action, the Wild locked horns with the Scorpions for the 3rd Place trophy. The Wild took an early 2-0 lead in this one on goals by Craig Standish and Daniel Mulqueen. But the Scorpions got right back in it with 2 goals of their own, scored by Dan Weiniger and Patrick Sammon. The Wild would take the lead into halftime with another goal by Daniel Mulqueen to make it a 3-2 lead for the Wild. In the second half, the Scorpions really got rolling. Alex Pommer tied the game for the Scorpions with a goal, only to see the Wild get the lead back on a goal by Michael Lester. But that would be it for the scoring for the Wild, as the Scorpions would go on to score 8 goals in a row to end the game with an 11-4 victory for the 3rd Place trophy. George Aller had 4 of the 8 goals scored, while the others were scored by Dan Weiniger, who had 2 more goals, Brian Weiniger, and Brendan Woods. Finally, the Championship Game for all the marbles, between the Ducks and the Rangers, was upon us. After the first 10 minutes were scoreless, Walter Quense got things started with a goal for the Ducks, only to see that matched by Jonathan Suriano's goal to tie it at 1-1. But before the half ended, Walter made sure the Ducks had the lead at halftime by scoring his second of the game to make it a 2-1 lead at the half. The Ducks then proceeded to open up a commanding 4-1 lead on 2 goals scored by Andrew Serge. Justin Turlip got one back for the Rangers to make it a two goal game at 4-2, but the Ducks quacked right back with one scored by James Hand. The Rangers' Anthony Buonvicino scored to make it a two goal game again at 5-3, but that would be all she wrote, as the Ducks' Walter Quense would complete the hat trick for the game's only other goal and the Championship win for the Ducks by the final score of 6-3. As all the Ducks players would say one last time, "Quack! Quack! Quack!".
