In addition to providing pavilion rentals, the Gary Parks & Recreation Department provides year-round activities for mature residents (lunch programs, bingo, crochet, quilting, sewing) and children (after-school, summer recreation/lunch programs). The children participate in arts and crafts, organized sports, field trips, swimming, and board games.

Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) is entering its 17th season in 2005. Since its inception in 1989, RBI has grown from a local program for kids in South Central Los Angeles to an international campaign encompassing over 200 cities and over 95,000 players.

The 2005 Northern League Champion Gary SouthShore RailCats are a Professional Minor League Baseball Team serving Northwest Indiana and Chicago’s south suburbs. For the last two years, they have been chosen “Best Local Spectator Sport” by Northwest Indiana Business Quarterly. Their 96 game schedule includes 48 home games at beautiful U. S. Steel Yard, an award-winning 6,000 seat state-of-the-art facility located next to the Indiana Toll Road (I-90) with easy access to I-65.
