The next Learn to Row clinic will be 10:30am Saturday, September 22, 2007, lasting until around 1:30PM. The first half is dedicated to teaching the body mechanics of the rowing stroke. This is accomplished using the ergometers (rowing machines) at the Newnan's Lake Boathouse. This is not a strenuous workout; however you will do some exercise. Muscles you don't normally use may come into play, so you may experience a bit of soreness the next day.

The second half of class is held on the lake. You will go out in a boat and put into practice what you learned earlier. Learners are teamed up with an equal number of experienced rowers. We have found this to be an effective and exciting way to give people a taste of what rowing is all about.

Also included with each clinic are 2 additional coached rows, which will be scheduled as "Open Novice Boats" thereafter. You must take advantage of these 2 rows within 2 months of starting the clinic. The cost of the whole package is $75 and is payable when you arrive at the clinic. Please make checks payable to GAR.

What to wear? Workout clothes that aren't too baggy. Bike-type shorts work well. For the land portion of the clinic, you'll want to wear tennis shoes.   When we get in the boat you will need socks only, as crew boats have built-in shoes to give the rower a stable platform. (I can hear what you're thinking: yes, they ARE all one size!)

What to bring?    Definitely bring water, everything else is optional.   You might want to have sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, and insect repellant.   Dont' forget your socks!

The directions to the Newnan's Lake Boathouse are posted below.

Pre-registration for Learn to Row is necessary. To pre-register or if you have further questions, please contact Amber Waters at amber_waters@hotmail.com.

DIRECTIONS TO NEWNAN'S LAKE

From Gainesville go east on University Avenue. Where Hawthorne Road (hwy 20) bears off to the right continue straight on University. In about 3 miles hwy 26 bears off to the left, but you stay in the right hand lane and continue straight on University Ave.(an overhead sign also says it is Co 329-B). If you continue straight about 1.5 miles you will end up in Newnan's Lake. Before that happens watch for SE 73 St on your right. You will also notice a yellow highway sign indicating a right turn in the road. On your left directly across the road from that sign is a dirt driveway and gate. That is the entrance to the boat house. Turn in there and proceed slowly straight back. Don't take any little turn offs.

You may spot a picnic pavillion and meadow to your right. You will pass behind UF's boathouse and then run right into GAR's boathouse. DRIVE SLOWLY AND VERY CAUTIOUSLY. For Saturday classes on Saturdays especially there likely will be lots of car/boat/rower/pedestrian traffic. Sundays are less a problem.
