It's Official Paul L. Klehm Field
On Thursday February 12th 2004 The Galion School Board approved the Naming of the High School Softball Field after long time softball friend, supporter and former coach Paul L. Klehm. I would like to thank the School Board for naming our field after such a "great person". I would like to thank the class of "2003" and the team from the 2002-2003 for presenting this proposal to Mr. Rose and the school board.
Galion Losses # 1 Fan
Paul L. Klehm, 85 of 319 Westgate Drive, Galion Died at 3:15 A.M.
Wednesday April 16, 2003 at home after having been in declining health.
Born January 6, 1918 in Marion he was the Son of the late Louis and Lena (Malo) Klehm.
He graduated from Galion High School in 1936 and attended Marion
Business College.
Enriching the lives of Galion and Crawford County residents played a large role in Paul's life.
Mr. Klehm was a charter member of the Galion Boosters Club and could be found popping corn for all of the Galion High School home football and basketball Games. He was a ticket taker many years at the front gates. During spring he spent many days watching boys baseball and girls softball teams play.
He earned the designation as the No. 1 fan of the Galion Girls Softball Team.
Paul and I talked almost daily during Softball Season and he was my
strongest supporter over the years. He would even come down to the field in the off season. In fact he would come down just to walk Rusty around the circle.
I met Paul in 1977 While I was playing Softball for Shorty & Dees. We
needed to Finish 1st in an extra tournament at the end of the Season to Qualify for the Very 1st Softball World Series in Mansfield. We had run out of money but Paul put up the cash so we could play. This was the kind of man Paul Klehm was, a giver. Every year Paul would hand me a hundred dollar bill and say spend this on the girls just don't tell them where you got it. Paul would always pick a
game toward the end of the season and provide pizza for the girls after the game.
I was so used to looking for Pauly and Rusty before every game. Now
they are both gone. Paul was one of the first Coaches for the Softball Team when Lynn Hoffman was the coach. Paul helped train the early pitchers like Kathi Montgomery, and Jodi Hoverland. Paul missed very few home games over 26 years. I remember when his wife passed away he had people over after the funeral. We had a game that night and he missed it. I was
cleaning up the field when I saw the blue car pull in. He got out and came over to the fence and asked how his girls had done that night. Paul was concerned about every girl, hoping that they would reach their potential. Paul loved the game of Fastpitch Softball and he loved the kids each and every one. There will never be another Paul Klehm. He was my friend, and I miss him every time I go
to the field.
