FRIENDSWOOD RAPIDS - U-12B 2005 Super II STATE CHAMPIONS!!! Again!!!The Friendswood Rapids, U-12 Boys won the 2005 Super II State Championship over the weekend in Houston at Bear Creek Park. This makes Back-to-Back State Championships for the Rapids who were U-11 Div II State Champions in 2004.
The Rapids played against the EPYSA El Paso Cruz Azul, AAYSA San Antonio Pumas, HYSA Westside Quest Dragons, and CAYSA Austin Revolution. In dramatic fashion, the Rapids came back from a 4th place standing on Saturday to win on Sunday outright with 27 points. El Paso finished 2nd with 26 points and Westside finished 3rd with 26 points. The third tie-breaker was used to determine the place for 2nd and 3rd. The Rapids, Eastern District Champions, tied the Westside Dragons (ED2) 1-1 on a chilly night in Friendswood on Tuesday. They then took on El Paso on Saturday and earned only another tie after an intense game. Going into Sunday, the Rapids were hoping for some luck with the other games and got it when El Paso tied Westside. That left the door wide open as the Rapids beat San Antonio 3-1 early Sunday. With the last game in front of them, and Westside finishing play with 26 points, the Rapids were in a must-win situation to earn their 2nd State title. In the final game, the Rapids and Austin were tied 0-0 at the half in a very physical and intense game. Never underestimate the heart of a champion. The Rapids dominated in every way in the second half and ended the game with a last second goal to win the contest 4-0.
The Rapids are coached by David Montz, with assistant coaches Bill Rich and Michelle Rich. The trainer is David Stewart. David Stewart has now trained 9 State Champion teams. The Rapids are now celebrating and taking some time off before playing winter tournaments and beginning play in the President's Cup.
