Brookdale Basketball Team Honored by Freeholders March 29th, 2013 By: MC Public Information Office, Atlantic Highlands Herald Men’s basketball team ends season with best record in school’s history At their March 28 regular meeting, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognized members of the Brookdale Community College men’s basketball team for winning their first Division III men’s basketball championship. “These dedicated young men of Brookdale’s Jersey Blues basketball team had a record-breaking year,” said Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone. “By training and playing with passion and skill they earned the most wins in their school’s history and a national championship.” As part of a spirited presentation ceremony, Freeholder John P. Curley provided a play-by-play of the final game that made the team the men’s champions of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The members of the 2012-13 team were: Neil Thompson, Amir Gilliam, Cory Soanes, David Rosado, Joe Nickerson, Anthony Seward, Paul Little, Brian Adams, DaRon Curry, Andrew Bostic and Ricky Stephens. Each player received an individual certificate of recognition from the Board of Chosen Freeholders. Led by head coach Paul Cisek, associate head coach Charlie Hawthorne, assistant coaches John Rivera, Ron Pastore, Rich Brunson and manager Alfonso Nachum, the Jersey Blues finished their landmark season with a 61-55 win over Eastfield College (Texas). The Jersey Blues are the first New Jersey team to garner this honor since 1994. Receiving special honors at the NJCAA tournament were Joe Nickerson who was named Tournament MVP. Neil Thompson was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Jersey Blues ended the 2012-13 season as the team with the most wins in Brookdale’s history with an overall record of 33-1.
