The U.S. Army built Fort Lowell in 1873 to protect the fledging city of Tucson against the Apaches. Today, a museum in the former commanding officer's quarters displays artifacts from military life in territorial days and tells the story of the site's long history. The park features baseball fields, a swimming pool, soccer fields, tennis courts, playground structures, and a duck pond.
