Underdog Squirts Claim Championship!
The Squirts pulled off yet another amazing come from behind victory to upset the #1 seed and previously undefeated Columbus Capitols to claim the Squirt A2 Championship in Strongsville Saturday night.
In typical Fremont fashion, the Ice Wolves got off to a sluggish start spotting Columbus a two goal lead going into the 2nd period. The championship atmosphere was intense and the team harnessed the energy and played their best period of hockey for the year scoring 4 unanswered goals in the second and taking a 4-2 lead into the 3rd period.
Having played this Columbus team twice before without a victory, the squirts new that it would be a hard fought third period. Fortunately, the only scoring in the third would be the 5th and final Fremont goal as solid defense and outstanding goaltending took Columbus out of their game.
As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Fremont fans erupted as our squirts claimed a 5-2 victory to win the league championship. The players were presented with individual trophies and subsequently the league banner which they proudly displayed while skating a victory lap and pausing for their noisy fans at the glass. It was another memorable moment in this debut season in the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League. It truly couldn't have been scripted any better. Thanks for the ride!
