Bantams Fall in Shootout

The Ice Wolves fell 7-6 to the Plymouth(MI)Great White Sharks in a shootout in the championship game of the Chicago Cup. After Phred Schumacher got Fremont off to a quick start just 2:15 into the game, the Ice Wolves would go on a cold spell falling behind 4-1 heading into the final period. Fremont would come alive scoring the next three goals. Mike Smith got the monkey off the backs of the Wolves with less than one minute gone in the final period. Then two minutes later Max Yellstrom brought the Ice Wolves back to within one with Smith assisting. Then just 10 seconds later Ethan Binger got the equalizer on a pass from Yellstrom.

The tie was short lived as less than one minute later the Sharks would get two quick goals of their own to regain what seemed like a safe lead. With 4:40 left in the game Binger picked up his second of the contest with Smith and Schumacher assisting. Then 56 seconds later Yellstrom took a pass from Jordan Frank to knot the score up once again. Fremont had three more scoring opportunities in regulation but could not get another goal.

The teams then went to a 5 on 5 overtime where the Ice Wolves managed to kill a penalty and TJ Humbert made 3 big saves. The second overtime was a 4 on 4 and the Ice Wolves were on fire getting off 8 more shots on goal. The Sharks goalie was up to the challenge and the second overtime ended as well.

It finally came to a shootout to determine the champion. Each team was allowed 5 players to take the breakaway to the opposing goalie. TJ Humbert did his part by stopping 4 of the 5 Sharks, but much like that second overtime none of the Ice Wolves could slip the puck past the big Shark goalie and the Ice Wolves brought home the runner's up banner. WHAT A GAME, WHAT A TEAM, WHAT A SEASON! GREAT JOB ICE WOLVES.

Ice Wolves Hand Blue Jackets First Loss

JMcAfee05
Josh McAfee Adds 2 Goals in Ice Wolves Win
The Ice Wolves bantams did just what they needed to do and more in a huge game on Sunday morning. After an earlier 4-1 Columbus win in Fremont in January, Fremont would need to beat the Blue Jackets in Columbus by at least 4 goals to have a chance to bring Fremont's first CSHL banner back to town. Columbus had allowed just 9 goals on the season going into the game so the task ahead was a big one.

But the Ice Wolves would rise to the occasion by getting the game's first 2 goals and forcing the Blue Jackets to play without the lead, something they are not used to doing. Mike Smith broke the ice just 1:01 into the contest and Alex Swope scored what would prove to be the game winner less than two minutes later. Even though Columbus would score the game's next goal, Fremont responded with 2 more goals in the period in route to a big 8-1 spanking.

The win set up a very important afternoon game with Westerville. A win in that game would bring the Bantam A3 championship banner to Fremont.

Ice Wolves Overwhelm Elyria

The Ice Wolves rolled over the Elyria Panthers on Saturday afternoon for their second preseason victory. The final score was 10-0. Most of the game was played under a running clock as Fremont skated out to a 7-0 lead with just under 3 minutes left in the first period. The Ice Wolves outshot the Panthers by a 29-4 count. Elyria will most likely be a "B" team this year so the Wolves will probably not play them again.

The scoring was spread around with Mike Smith, Max Yellstrom and Alex Swope each getting two goals. Phred Schumacher, Ethan Binger, Casey Wojciechowski and Liam Galvin each added a goal as well. Josh McAfee, Yellstrom (3), Wojo, Paul Wendt and Max Celek picked up assists.

TJ Humbert was not seriously tested, but stopped all 4 shots he faced getting his first shutout of the season in net for the Ice Wolves.

Phred Schumacher was called for a game misconduct penalty and will sit out the Sunday afternoon game with Cleveland Heights.

Shaker Heights Comes from Behind to Top Ice Wolves

Shaker Heights, Ohio - The Ice Wolves raced to a 3-0 lead after one period, but collapsed in the second period allowing 4 unanswered goals to lose the lead for good.

The score was briefly tied at 4-4 until a quick flurry which saw the Raiders score 3 goals in less than a minute put Shaker up for good. Shaker's last four goals were all on special teams with the first 2 being played 4 on 4, the third was a power play goal and the final goal was shorthanded.

Alex Swope got the Wolves on the boards midway through the first period followed by a 5 on 3 powerplay goal by Max Yellstrom and then Mike Smith's first of three goals for the game. Smith and Max Celek assisted on Yellstrom's goal. Phred Schumacher picked up an assist on Smith's second goal.

The two goals Smith added in the third period continued his blistering scoring streak to start the season. He has scored 13 goals in the first four games spread out evenly with hat tricks in three games and four in the other game.

TJ Humbert made 9 saves in goal.

The team prepares for a big 3 game weekend in Fremont on October 29 & 30.

Parma Scores Late to Beat Bantam Ice Wolves

Parma, Ohio - The Ice Wolves Bantam team played another outstanding game vs. a higher seeded team. In the end the Parma Flyers topped Fremont by a 7-6 score.

For the second straight game, the Ice Wolves outshot the competition, this time by a 36-22 count.

The Ice Wolves never led in the game, but the score was 5-5 when the Flyers broke the tie with just 3:31 left in the contest. They scored again one minute later to extend the lead to 7-5.

With 1:21 left in the game, and a face-off in the Parma end the Ice Wolves called a time-out and pulled goalie TJ Humbert for the extra attacker. The move paid off when Mike Smith crashed the net after the face-off and scored with 1:11 left.

Humbert stayed off the ice and the Ice Wolves got several more quality chances in the final minute, but could not get the equalizer.

Smith scored 4 of the team's goals and assisted on the other two. Jordan Frank and Paul Wendt picked up the other goals for the Ice Wolves. Ethan Binger, Max Celek and Frank each picked up one assist in the game. TJ Humbert made 15 saves for the Wolves.
