Dairy Queen Mites Repeat As Champions At Troy

The Dairy Queen Mites ended the 2003-04 season in style by winning three straight games to claim their second straight Troy Hockey Invitational Championship. In their first game of the tournament on Friday, 03/12/04, the Dairy Queen Mites defeated the Dayton Bombers by an 8-1 score. The first period ended in a scoreless tie. Fremont erupted for 5 goals in the second period and 3 goals in the final stanza to seal the victory. Six different players scored for Fremont including Cole Bowers (2), Nick Novitski, Austin Halbisen, Matt Pulaski, Isaac Prunty and Logan Apling. Prunty, Halbisen, Jacob Greenhill and Zach Dorr (2) were credited with assists in the opener. Jacob Relford and Caleb Heilman shared goaltending duties in the victory.

In their second game of the tournament, the Mites defeated the host Troy Bruins by a 5-0 score on Saturday, 03/13/04. Five different players scored goals for Fremont, including Cameron Singleton, Prunty, Pulaski, Novitski and Bowers. Bowers also had a picture perfect pass to Pulaski for an assist. Once again, Relford and Heilman shared goaltending duties in the victory.

Points are accumulated by teams throughout the tournament to determine who plays in the championship and consolation games. The championship game in the Mite division ended up being a rematch between the Fremont Dairy Queen Mites and the host, Troy Bruins on Sunday, 03/14/04. Fremont prevailed again by a 4-0 score. The Dairy Queen defense smothered any effort by Troy to score, only allowing 2 shots on goal. Scoring for Fremont were Novitski (2), Bowers and Pulaski. Singleton, Prunty, Isaac Culbert and Connor Busack were credited with assists in the lopsided victory.

The Dairy Queen blue liners led by Luke Stierwalt, Isaac Prunty, Sam Kohler and Cole Bowers played stellar defense throughout the tournament. The defense, coupled with excellent back checking in the neutral zone by forwards Matt Pulaski, Nick Novitski, Cameron Singleton and Jake Wojciechowski were the keys to victory for Fremont throughout the tournament.

The Dairy Queen coaching staff of Ron Wagner, Mark Moir, Ryan Moir and Jay Bowers focused their instruction for the last 6 weeks of the season on playing "position" hockey and the players responded. The practices were intense and spirited and the boys played the game with alot of heart.

Dairy Queen Mites Split a Pair with Findlay

The Dairy Queen Mites split a pair of games on Sunday, March 7, 2004 at the Hancock Recreation Center. The Mites were defeated 5-0 by the Findlay Oiler travel team and bounced back to defeat the Findlay Oiler house team by a 6-2 score.

In the opener (10:00 am), Findlay controlled the tempo from the drop of the puck as Fremont could only muster 3 shots on goal. We were reactive the whole game and they took it to us.

In the second game (12:00 noon), our Mites bounced back for a respectable showing by defeating Findlay 6-2. First year player John Spahr got things going scoring a goal on a feed from Cole Bowers. This was Spahr's first goal of the year and ignited the Heat early on. Cole Bowers scored a hat trick for the Dairy Queen Mites in addition to his assist and Isaac Prunty registered 2 goals for the Heat. Matt Pulaski assisted Prunty on one of his goals.

Netminder Caleb Heilman gave up 2 goals in the first period and shut the Oilers down thereafter. Heilman made 12 saves on 14 shots on goal. The Dairy Queen Mites enter the Troy Tournament boasting a record of 8-7-1 since combining teams. Aspirations are high as the Mites return to defend their title at Troy.

DQ Mites Defeat BG All Stars

The D.Q. Mites defeated the Bowling Green All Stars by a 7 - 4 score on Saturday 3/6/04 at the Fremont Rec. Center. This was an exciting game in which the score was tied 2 - 2 at the end of the first period. The score was tied at 4 - 4 at the end of the 2nd period. Fremont scored 3 unanswered goals in the 3rd period to seal the victory.

Defenseman Luke Stierwalt scored his first goal of the season and had an assist to lead Fremont. Jon Ollom assisted Stierwalt's goal for his first point of the season also. Austin Halbisen also scored his first goal of the season for the D.Q. Mites.

Logan Apling had two goals for the Heat, from his right winger position. Matt Pulaski, Nick Novitski, and Cameron Singleton also scored goals for the D.Q. Mites. Cole Bowers rounded out the scoring for the Heat with an assist.

Jacob Relford and Caleb Heilman shared goaltending duties for the victorious D.Q. Mites. The D.Q. Mites are back in action on Sunday, March 7, 2004 in Findlay taking on the Findlay Travel team at 10:00 am and the Findlay house team at 12:00 noon. Both games will be played at the Hancock Rec. Center.

Dairy Queen Mites Sweep Findlay Over the Weekend

The Dairy Queen Mites defeated the Findlay Oiler House team in a pair of weekend games at the Fremont Rec. Center. On Saturday, 2/28/04, Fremont defeated Findlay by an 8-0 score. Cole Bowers had a pair of goals and a pair of assists for the Heat. Matt Pulaski had a goal and an assist and Connor Busack assisted on two goals for the Heat. Isaak Edgar and Zach Dorr logged their first goals of the season for the Heat and Sam Kohler, Jacob Wojciechowski and Nick Novitski lit the scoring lamp also for the Heat. Jake Relford and Caleb Heilman shared goaltending duties in the shutout victory.

Findlay returned on Sunday, 2/29/04, and appeared energized for a rematch. Fremont, however, responded to the challenge coming out on top by an 8-3 score. Cameron Singleton took advantage of the opportunity to center his own line by scoring two goals for the Heat. Cameron wins many of the battles on the boards and does so many positive things during a game that do not show up on the scoresheet for his team.

Logan Apling scored his first goal of the season for the Heat also. Logan, in just his first year of playing hockey, has been placed on defense at times and also as a right winger. His versatility has been a luxury for the Heat coaching staff. Also scoring for the D.Q. Heat Mites were Bowers (2), Novitski, Wojciechowski and Pulaski. Jake Greenhill, Edgar and John Spahr logged assists for the Heat. Heilman and Relford once again shared goaltending duties in the victory. Both played solid games over the weekend.

Isaac Culbert earned the coaching staff's "Mr. Hustle" award this weekend for his movement up and down the ice. It was noted that Isaac, also in his first year of hockey, was in the proper position on the ice throughout the weekend from his left winger position. Sam Kohler and Isaac Prunty also played solid defensive games over the weekend. This duo has been relied on heavily to shut down the opposing team's top scoring line. The Dairy Queen Mites are back in action this coming weekend. Check the website for updated details. Go Heat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defensemen Get Offensive in D.Q. Mites Victory over Findlay

The D.Q. Mites defeated Findlay House Mites by a 4 - 2 score on Saturday 2/21/04 at HRC. All Fremont goals were scored by defensemen.

Findlay caught Fremont on their heels early and took a 1 - 0 lead 3 minutes into the contest. Isaac Prunty would even the contest at 1 - 1 when he scored with 6:15 left in the first period. Logan Apling was credited with the assist. Cole Bowers gave Fremont the lead 2 - 1 by scoring a goal with 4:31 left in the first period. Luke Stierwalt was credited with the assist.

Prunty would tally another goal early in the second period to stretch the Fremont lead to 3 - 1. Bowers assisted on this goal. Halfway through the second period, Sam Kohler would score after some nifty puck handling to give Fremont a 4 - 1 lead. Findlay would score again with 24 ticks left in the second period to make it 4 - 2. No scoring took place in the third period.

Our defensemen do so many things that don't show up on the stat sheet, however, today would be different. The heat smothered anything the Findlay offense attempted to get going in the neutral zone. Caleb Heilman and Jake Relford shared goaltending duties for the Heat.

DQ Mites Win Two in Winterhurst Tournament

The Dairy Queen Mites had an impressive showing at the Winterhurst Hockey Association 2004 Presidents Day Tournament. The Mites won their first 2 games and advanced to the semi-finals of the six team Mite A division, where they were defeated by Winterhurst Geither 2 - 1 in a hard fought game.

The tournament started with the Mites defeating the Parma Flyers at 6:45 am on Saturday 2/14/04 by a 6 - 0 score. Cole Bowers scored 3 goals, Nick Novitski scored 2 goals and assisted another, Isaac Prunty scored a goal and Jake Wojciechowski, Logan Apling, Matt Pulaski, and Zach Dorr were credited with an assist in the victory. Jake Relford got the win in goal for the Dairy Queen Mites. Opposing coaches vote for each team's MVP after the game. Bowers was voted the MVP of the first game.

The next game for the Dairy Queen Mites was against the Rocky River Pirates at 3:45 pm on 2/14/04. The Mites were again victorious in this contest defeating Rockey River 8 - 3. Pulaski had 4 goals and Novitski had 3 goals and an assist to lead the Dairy Queen Mites to a victory. Bowers also scored a goal and Dorr, Prunty, and Sam Kohler were credited with assists in the Fremont victory.

Relford got the win in goal for Fremont after playing another solid game. Save totals were not available for the game. Relford was voted MVP by the Rocky River coaches in this game. Pulaski, Novtiski, and Prunty also had performances worthy of this honor.

By winning their 3 team division, Fremont earned the right to play the second place team in the other 3 team division in the semi-finals. To advance to the finals of the Mite A division, Fremont needed to defeat Winterhurst - Geither. This game was a hard fought physical game from the start. Winterhurst scored first to take a 1 - 0 lead at the end of the first period. Pulaski, with an assist from Bowers, tied the score at 1 - 1 on a power play goal and this is how the second period would end.

In the third period, Nick Novitski appeared to score a goal that was waived off by the official. Winterhurst would then score a power play goal after a questionable "too many men on the ice" penalty against Fremont. Jake Relford would again play superbly in goal saving 22 of 24 shots. He was again voted MVP. The Winterhurst goalie made 24 saves on 25 shots and was unbelievable in net. He stopped several break away shots by Pulaski, Novitski and Bowers to secure the win. Fremont also had other power play opportunities that they were unable to take advantage of in this contest.

Fremont bowed out of the tournament with an impressive 2 - 1 record despite a mixed roster of Mites and Mini-Mites playing in a Mite A tournament. This is an accomplishment in and of itself. Good job HEAT!

Dairy Queen Mites Battle Back to Tie Elyria

The Dairy Queen Mites battled back to tie the Elyria Panthers 5-5 with 9 seconds left in the third period on 2/07/04. Elyria beat the Dairy Queen Mites 9-2 earlier this season at Elyria. This time was different though as Fremont played inspired hockey throughout the contest having leads of 1-0 and 2-1.

The first period ended 1-0 Fremont as Nick Novitski tallied the first Fremont goal just 2 minutes and 32 seconds into the contest. Matthew Pulaski gave Fremont its second lead, 2-1 as he scored 2 minutes and 34 seconds into the second period. The second period would end with Elyria in the lead 3-2. Pulaski again lit the lamp 31 seconds into the third period to knot the score at 3-3 and set the stage for what would be an exciting finish.

Elyria would again take control of the contest, scoring the next 2 goals to go ahead 5-3. However, the fire would reignite for the Heat as Cole Bowers scored with 2 minutes and 21 seconds to go in the contest. A Dairy Queen Mite "Powerline" would then finish the contest to put some pressure on the Panthers. This strategy worked as defenseman Isaac Prunty made what turned out to be the play of the day. With under 30 seconds to go and the puck in the Elyria zone, Prunty held the blue line and dumped the puck back on net. Nick Novitski settled the puck from the left slot and scored with 9 ticks left in the contest to knot the score 5-5. This is how it would end. Goalie Jake Relford was on top of his game in this one making save after save. Jake and the rest of the Mites are gaining momentum as they head east to do battle with teams from the Cleveland area and New York in the Winterhurst Hockey Tournament 2/13/04 to 2/16/04. Our first game in the tournament is Sat. 2/14/04 at 6:45 am. The theme of the weekend tournament is "Play Your Heart Out" in honor of St. Valentines Day.   GO HEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sylvania Travel Defeats Mite House

The Dairy Queen Mite House team was defeated by the Sylvania White Travel team by a 7 - 3 score on 1/25/04. Scoring goals for Fremont were Matthew Pulaski, Cole Bowers, and Jacob Wojciechowski. Pulaski's first goal was a sweet glove-side top-shelf lifter that finally got Fremont in the scoring column.

Devensively, Jacob Relford held Sylvania scoreless in the first period and played his heart out between the pipes. Luke Stierwalt, Sam Kohler, Isaac Prunty, Cole Bowers, and Austin Halbisen played well on the blue line. The Dairy Queen Mites are once again in action on Sat. 2/7/04 against Elyria at 1:30 PM at the Fremont Rec. Center.

Dairy Queen Mites Beat Bowling Mites

The Fremont Heat Dairy Queen Mites defeated a Bowling Green Mite House team by a 10-1 score on Saturday January 17, 2004. Nick Novitski took the opening face off and scored 7 seconds into the contest. Novitski also scored another goal for the Heat. Cole Bowers scored 4 goals for Fremont, all on defense. Mites Split a Pair

The Fremont Heat Mites split a pair of games on 1/11/04, winning 4 - 0 against Findlay Mite House at 8:00 am in Findlay and losing 8 - 6 against Findlay Mite Travel at 1:30 pm in Fremont.

Cole Bowers had a hat trick and an assist in the win against Findlay. Isaac Prunty also scored a goal for Fremont. Jacob Greenhill had 2 assist and Matt Pulaski and John Spahr also were credited with an assist each in the win.

In the second game, Fremont scored 5 goals in the 3rd period to make a good game out of this one. Pulaski, Bowers, and Novitski scored 2 goals each for Fremont. Novitski also logged an assist in the contest. Jake Relford played a good game as goalie for Fremont.

Logan Apling, Cameron Singleton, and Zach Dorr played good games defensively for Fremont. We matched up equally with the travel team when mites were matched against mites. The mites are in action again on 1/17/04 at 4:30 pm in Fremont against the Bowling Green All Stars.

Mite Teams Now Combined

As you know we started the season with 2 mite teams; Coach Jay's team and Coach Danielle's team. With Danielle's team losing 5 players, the two teams will now be officially combined and everyone is to show up for all previously scheduled games for both teams. If you have any questions, contact Brad Wendling, coach Jay or coach Danielle.

Sunday, January 4
Mites Take Two on the Chin

The mites had the rare occasion of playing two games on Sunday; the first was a 10-2 loss to Elyria in Elyria at 8:00am and the second a 7-2 loss to the Findlay travel team in Fremont which had a 1:30 start.

This was the first time any Fremont mite team has played an Elyria team. The Elyria team is a AA minor team in the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League and equivalent to the house "all star" teams we have been playing. We will have a grudge match in Fremont on February 7th at 1:30.

The Findlay game was more encouraging. They ended up playing a 4th period as there was plenty of ice time left after the game. Fremont was down 5 to 1 through the first two periods, but managed to end strong in the last two periods finishing behind in those two by a 2 to 1 margin. The mites next action is in Findlay at 8:00am on 1/11/03.

Mites Lose to Sylvania White

Although it started off great with Nick Novitski scoring the game's first goal and Fremont tallying two more to go up 3-0, the Sylvania White teamed buckled down and came back with 5 unanswered goals of their own for an eventual 5-3 victory. A lot of progress was shown in this game by the younger players who are really picking up the pace and showing great development. Also, Jake "Hollywood" Relford played exceptionally well between the pipes. The mites next game is 1/04/04 @ 8:30am at Elyria.

DQ One Mites Win Opener

The Dairy Queen Mites 1 team split a pair of away games this weekend. They opened the season with a win over the BG All Stars on Saturday, 11/15/03 at the University of Findlay Clauss Ice Areana, 6 - 5. On Sunday, 11/16/03, the DQ Mites 1 team lost 6 - 0 to a tough Sylvania AA Travel team that held tryouts in July.
Matt Pulaski led Fremont with 2 goals on Saturday. His supporting cast was impressive to say the least. Cole Bowers and Rick Kwapich each scored a goal and had an assist, while Connor Busack and Isaac Prunty tallied a goal each.
Jake Relford got the win on Saturday with a 16 save performance and made numerous saves on Sunday.
