2nd Annual Cross Town Classic
Cats go up 2 0 in the Cross-town Classic Series
The Junior Wildcats traveled to Mokena on Thursday night to take on the Burros in the 2nd annual Cross-town Classic game. The Wildcats looking to defend their title took the wet muddy field by storm and struck first scoring on the opening drive of the game to take an early 8-0 lead. Two strong defenses took over from there as neither team was able to move the ball. It wasnt until late in the 2nd quarter when the Cats got on track again and put together a very impressive drive. Using a combination of run and passing the Cats was able to move effectively down the field scoring at the end of the 2nd quarter to go up 16-0 at half.
Mokena opened the 3rd quarter with a TD of their own, however, the Cats Special Teams stepped up and blocked the extra point attempt to make the score 16-6. The Burros would score once more later in the game and again the Cats got their paws up to block their 2nd attempt, Wildcats 16 Burros 12.
It was at that time Coach Pirkle and crew rallied the troops and got the defense fired up. Mokena would have 2 more chances to take the lead, but the Cats stellar defense came up strong stopping a late Mokena rally. The Frankfort Square Wildcats secured the win as the Burros turned the ball over on downs.
I think everyone in attendance that night would agree that both teams played outstanding football on a sloppy wet field. The sportsmanship from both teams was top notch, with neither team quitting ..both playing hard to the end. The majority of these boys will move onto LWE next year and become teammates in what looks to be another outstanding Freshman Football team for the Griffins. Good luck to all of the 8th graders and thank you for another exciting game. We look forward to watching you all exceed and go undefeated at LWE.
