State Championships: 1990-1991 and Scoring History
The 1990 Panthers captured the school's first ever state championship under head coach Tim Klein and assistants Mike Pratley and Jim Taylor. It was the first-ever championship in the new eight-class format. Earlier in the season the Panthers defeated the Marion Eagles, who went on to win the Class DD state championship. The Panthers were a perfect 13-0 and scored 571 points, an average of almost 44 points per game! On defense they recorded eight shutouts, giving up only 59 points, an average of a little more than four points per game, and never allowing more than 10 points in any game. This team set a state record for scoring that lasted all of about 27 hours, before the record was eclipsed by Dowagiac in their state title game the following day.
The 1991 Panthers, under Klein, Pratley and Taylor, repeated as state champions, but took statistics to an even higher level. They scored fewer points than their predecessors had in 1990, at 458 points, but gave up only 21 points for the entire season, 14 in the regular season and seven in their playoff run!! In the process they recorded 11 shutouts in thirteen games!! That means only two teams scored on the 91 Panthers, one of those being the Shamrocks of Portland St. Patrick who scored a lone touchdown in the state final game. They shut out the entire Northwest Conference with the exception of the Manton Rangers who scored twice, and shut out the entire playoff field until the final game.
Since that time, all three of theses coaches have been inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and have combined in their careers for well over 600 victories.
Below are the scores and points for the seasons 1965-2001. There have been only 6 losing seasons in the last 39 years!
In all, the Panthers have played for the state championship in the Pontiac Silverdome five times!
In 2000 the Panthers made it to the semi-finals before falling victim to Crystal-Falls-Forest Park. In 2001 in the District Finals the Cats were defeated 7-6 by Beal City.
