Valero Benicia Refinery - Media Release September 30, 2011

Benicia - The Valero Benicia Refinery announced today, September 30, that 20 children's charities nominated by refinery employees will be the recipients of grants totaling $375,000.  The funds were raised through the 2011 Valero Texas Open and Benefit for Children Golf Classic tournaments, held in San Antonio, Texas, last April.

"We truly appreciate how the organizations receiving grants today work to enrich the lives of the children of Benicia, Vallejo, Fairfield, Vacaville, and other nearby communities," said Doug Comeau, vice president and general manager of the Valero Benicia Refinery.  "These charities, like most nonprofit organizations, accomplish amazing results using very limited resources."

Added Comeau, "Like many businesses and individuals, nonprofit organizations are experiencing continued financial pressures because of the strained ecomomy.  We know these grants will be put to good use and help hundreds of area children."

Since 2001 when the Benicia refinery began distributing dollars from the annual golf tournament, 81 children's charities have shared the more than $3.1 million distributed by refinery from the annual golf event.  This figure does not include other charitable contributions made throughout the year by the Benicia refinery, nor does it include the United Way contributions made by Valero and its employees.

Thanks to the generosity of Valero's business partners and sponsors, the Valero Texas Open remains one fo the most charitable tournaments on the PGA Tour.  This year nationwide, Valero will distribute a record $9 million to children's charities in the areas where it does business.

The grants announced today, ranging in amounts from $10,000 to $40,000, will help organizations dedicated to enhancing children's lives by providing a variety of services and programs such as camps for youth, educational and recreational programs for at-risk youths, and resources for disadvantaged children.

"Once again, the generosity of Valero's many business partners and sponsors has generated a record amount to be distributed to children's charities in the area where Valero does business, "Valero would not be able to provide this level of financial support for children's charities," Executive Vice President and general counsel of Valero Energey Corporation Kim Bowers said.  Bowers was the company executive who oversaw the 2011 Valero Texas Open.
