Fort Hill's Austin Williams Ranked 6th in State at 171lbs!
Austin Williams #1pic vs Northern013102
With the preseason polls out, Fort Hill's Austin Williams has been ranked sixth in the 1A/2A state of Maryland at 171lbs by the Maryland State Wrestling Association. This is Austin's second year that he has been ranked in the state during the preseason. Click on the above Headline for the complete Maryland State rankings!

Also, Austin is shooting for his 100th win as a Sentinel. Currently, he has a 72-34 record which is just 28 wins shy of the century mark. More than half of those loses, 17 to be exact, came during his freshman year. That year, Austin wrestled 189lbs for his team while only weighing about 162lbs but still recorded 18 wins.

"I can't remember the last time a Fort Hill wrestler recorded 100 varsity wins.", Coach Nichols stated. "It is a great accomplishment in the state of Maryland because of the few opportunities we have compared to WV. They might have 50 plus matches a year over there but we are limited by the scheduling rules in Maryland. In this state, a wrestler is lucky to get 35 matches and to do that, that wrestler has to qualify for regionals and the state tournament. It's something that Austin definitely needs to shoot for this year. It would be a wonderful accomplishment. If you asked me when Austin was a freshman if he would have had a chance to reach 100 wins in high school, I probably wouldn't have thought so. If he does it, I hope that he won't be the last.", Coach Nichols added.

When asked about the 100 wins, Austin said,"It's a goal that I've had for myself. I really want it, I got to make it happen!". However it turns out, we certainly are cheering for Austin Williams.

Fort Hill Returns Six 1A/2A West Regional Qualifiers!
Lance Dicken #1pic @ Westmar 122201
Senior Lance Dicken
With the wrestling season started, Fort Hill is pinning their hopes on six returning 1A/2A West Region Qualifiers to lead their team to another successful season. Returning qualifiers are Chris Brown(11), Artie Butler(11), Lance Dicken(12), Jared Skelley(11), Josh Tart(11), and Austin Williams(12).

Chris Brown(11)is coming off a solid sophomore season in which he had recorded 18 wins with only seven losses. He also made 75 team points in dual matches, and took 3rd in the TR Davis Memorial Tournament.

Junior Artie Butler had a 16-17 record as a Sophomore Team Captain. Artie was a leader both on and off the mat last year. Taking 3rd in both the Fort Hill Super Dual Meet Tournament and the Bi-county Tournament last year, Artie has a great reason to be excited this year.

Senior Lance Dicken ended the 2001-2002 season with a 17-15 varsity record. Really coming on last year, he took 2nd in the TR Davis Memorial Tournament, 3rd in the Fort Hill Super Dual Meet Tournament, and 3rd in the Bi-county tournament. This year should be really exciting for Lance!

As a sophomore, Jared Skelley turned alot of heads in cluding his Coach! Stepping in at 103 for State Qualifier Roy Payne, Jared ended his Sophomore season and first full varsity year with a 20-10 record! "I can't say I was shocked," Coach Nichols said, "but, I was definitely pleased!"! Jared was the TR Davis Memorial Champion, took 2nd in the Bi-County tournament, and 5th in the regions. This could really be a breakout season for Jared!

Junior Josh Tart had a great season last year also! With a 20-13 record, Josh took 3rd in the Super Duals and scored 102 team points in dual meets. Not bad at all for his first varsity year!

Senior Austin Williams is coming off his second state qualifiying year in which he had a 27-9 record. It was also his second year as a Team Captain. He took second at the Fort Hill Super Duals, 3rd at the TR Davis, 3rd at Bi-counties and 3rd at the 1A/2A West regionals.

Fort Hill defeats Petersburg Vikings!
Austin Williams 2002-03
Senior Team Captain Austin Williams started the Sentinels off right by pinning Petersburg's Erik Schwandt in the first match to lead the 54-20 victory! He was then followed up with pins by Junior Team Captain Jason Oates, Senior Josh Tart, Senior Lance Dicken, Sophomore Billy Aldridge, Junior Jesse Lambert, and Junior Chris Brown. Junior Team Captain Artie Butler and Sophomore Brandon Abe received forfeits.

Senior Joe Stump, weighing in at 193lbs wrestled an outstanding match against Zach Poland of Petersburg, who weighed in at just 2 pounds under the 275lb maxium weight. Never giving up a takedown and registering 4 of his own, Joe fought off his back twice to go up 15-10 before pinning Poland with just 5 seconds left in the match. It was a great emotional boost for the team! He did an outstanding job!

"I really feel like were starting to recover from last week! Petersburg is a good team and we were ready for them! Now it's time to get ready for the rest of the season! Today was a totall team effort! Everyone in that matroom, Varsity and JV, attributed to this win by stepping up the practices!", Coach Nichols stated. "I'm finally excited about the rest of the season!"

Hedgesville Edges Fort Hill for C.V.A.L. Crown!
Austin Williams 2002-03
Team Captain Austin Williams won his 2nd CVAL Championship!
The Fort Hill Wrestling team missed a huge opportunity to win it's first Cumberland Valley Athletic League title in quite some time by losing to the Hedgesville Eagles 50-24 in what would be the title match-up. "It has been a very rare opportunity for us over the years to put together a team that can compete with Martinsburg, Jefferson, and Hedgesville. They have such great feeder programs in those areas and can wrestle many more times than we can in Maryland.” Coach Nichols stated. “But I tell you, this Sentinel team we have can beat anyone when they are on a roll. We wrestle with a lot of emotion! We will need that emotion this week when we meet Northern and Hyndman!”

It was, however, not that bad of a day for Fort Hill. Senior Austin Williams did become the 171lb. Champion by winning five straight matches all by first period pins. He truly had a great day that included pinning Brad Ammons of Hedgesville in 1:15. Ammons is currently ranked 6th at 171lbs. in the AAA West Virginia’s Coaches Poll. This is Austin’s second CVAL Championship. He also won the 189lb. class in 2001.

Five other Sentinels had pretty good performances as well. Junior Michael Hupe, Sophomore Brandon Abe, Senior Lance Dicken, Junior Josh Tart, and Junior Jason Oates all went 4-1 on the day for second place finishes! Also, Junior Jesse Lambert, Junior Chris Brown, and Senior John Wertz all went 3-2 on the day. Not for the returning cast that should have a real shot at the title next year. Junior Jason Oates, a Team Captain, summed it up this way, "General George S. Patton once said that if a man does his best, what else is there? This year at the CVAL tournament we did our best. However, I have to disagree with General Patton, because next year we're going to do our best and bring home a CVAL title at the same time."

There is a pecking order in the CVAL conference. Hedgesville is on top by going 5-0 for the day. Close behind is our own Sentinels (4-1). Followed by the Jefferson Cougars (3-2). Then the bottom of the conference is Martinsburg (2-3), and then Musselman (1-4) followed by Woodrow Wilson (0-5).

In parting Coach Nichols said, “I know that I should be happy with our first 2nd place finish in like forever, but we just can't help but feel let down, because we let the Hedgesville match get away from us. We were so confident that we could and would win the title after beating Jefferson (Ranked 9th in WV AAA). We were on a roll! All we needed was to win three matches more. I guess times really have changed for wrestling at Fort Hill. Wanting to win isn’t enough anymore; we expect to win now against everyone! All of these kids put in the effort to win!”

Fort Hill Stops Northern 42-34!
The night got started off on the right foot withFort Hill Junior Chris Brown going up on Northern's Michael Wolf 12-11 before pinning him in 5:49. That win, seemed to propell the Sentinels to what would be only their 2nd victory against Northern Garrett in 19 years but it is their second straight!

It was a total team effort by the Fort Hill Wrestlers! Senior Austin Williams did his part by pinning Northern Garrett's Andy Sebolt. Also, Junior Josh Tart went up on Northern's Lee Yoder 4-1 before pinning him in 3:18 for another key match up. Then Jason Oates and Joe Stump came away with pins. Then Brandon Abe and Lance Dicken sealed the win with pins!

Fort Hill improves it Dual Meet record to 9-3-1 and has a shot at the Dual Meet Region's final spot with this win over Northern Garrett. The final spot will be determined by Saturday night when the Sentinels are in a must win situation against Hyndman. To even have a shot, the Sentinels must beat the Hyndman Hornets!

SHORT GAP, W.Va. — R.J. Payne earned a scholarship to Hershey College for his skills in the sport of wrestling. But instead he chose to follow his lifelong dream of becoming a soldier.

Now, the 2002 Fort Hill High graduate is somewhere in the desert sands of the Middle East. The last couple of weeks he was in Kuwait.

R.J.’s aunt, Barb Proffitt, hasn’t heard from him since the bombing of Baghdad began Wednesday night.

“Up to two days ago, he could e-mail me almost daily,” she said Friday. “We haven’t heard from him since the bombing began. He said they were getting ready to move out and he would e-mail when he could.

“It’s something he always wanted to do. He wanted to be in the Army since he was a little kid.”

Following basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and a brief assignment at Fort Campbell, Ky., Payne was assigned to Kuwait. He arrived there about two weeks ago.

Proffitt said her nephew was initially assigned to demolition, “but I don’t know what he is doing now.

“I know the Screaming Eagles are an elite group that goes in ahead of everybody else.

“R.J. just loves the military so much, he just wants to do a good job. He’s been a wonderful kid that always took care of his sisters.

“He’s just an all-around good kid,” said Proffitt. “And anybody who knows him will tell you he’s a joy.”

Bernie Nichols, R.J.’s wrestling coach at Fort Hill, said, “R’J.’s got a lot of heart. He’s a real team leader, the kind of kid you’d want on your team. All the kids looked up to him. He has an outstanding personality that attracts everyone.

Nichols also said R.J. didn’t start wrestling until his sophomore year.

“He wasn’t that big but he kept working hard and he made it to the state tournament two years in a row, which is really hard to do.

“R.J. was bi-county champion his senior year and won a lot of tournaments,” said Nichols.

R.J.’s mother, Tiffany Payne, resides in Granby, Mo.

“R.J. called me about 1:30 this morning,” she said Friday. “He wanted to let me know he’s all right. It was short but sweet and good to know he’s doing all right,” said Tiffany Payne.

“I don’t know exactly where he is. But I know he’s safe and that’s all I need to know. I thought I was dreaming. I couldn’t go back to sleep after I talked to him.

“I e-mail him every day and drop a letter in the mail about every other day,” said Tiffany. “Now I’m waiting to hear from him again.”

R.J.’s brother Josh is a 2001 graduate of Fort Hill. His sister Brandi attends Washington Middle School, and sister Chelsea is a student at Northeast Elementary School. They reside with their father, Roy Payne, in Cumberland.

Austin Williams 2002-03
Austin Williams is The Tommy Diehl Award Winner!
Williams vs SH 122802
This year's Tommy Diehl Award winner for the most outstanding wrestler is Senior Captain Austin Williams. Austin has leaded this team in every category - he had the most wins, the most regional points, the best record, and the most takedowns. Not to mention the quickest pin I have ever personally seen against his Allegany opponent this season. Although Austin hasn’t won a state championship, he holds the most career wins ever by a wrestler at Fort Hill with 104 victories in his four years as a starter! Also, Austin is a 3X State Qualifier, 4X Regional Qualifier, 3X Team Captain, 2003 Bi-county Champion, 2001 and 2003 CVAL Champion, and 2003 All-WMIL All Area 1st team.

"I’m really proud of Austin’s accomplishments while at Fort Hill! They really speak for themselves! He has been a great wrestler both on and off the mat!” Coach Nichols stated. "His wrestling, work ethnic, and leadership is really going to be missed, not to mention that we have been coming to wrestling practice together for the last 11 years! It’s tough coaching your son at sport like wrestling but I wouldn’t have traded it for anything in the world! I know I speak for the entire Fort Hill Community when I say that I wish him and every senior the best of luck in what ever they do!"
