Fort Hill Returning Two State Qualifiers in 2001-2002
It's been a long time since two state qualifiers have returned to the mats at Fort Hill as Wrestlers and not as Alumni! Senior Roy Payne and Junior Austin Williams will be returning to Fort Hill's mat this year in hopes of returning to the State Tournament for the second year in a row. That alone will be an accomplishment but both really have their eyes on winning the first state championship for Fort Hill since Dave Phillips did it in 1990. Also, Buddy Vanmeter and Louie Schaidt were the last wrestlers to place in the State Tournament for Fort Hill.
They now know what to expect at this years tournament. Roy recorded a win in his very exciting match against the top seeded Owings Mill opponent in the 103lb class and then lost two very close matches. Austin recorded a win in the 189lb class before losing two. Both had very good showings that earned them a lot of respect by never letting up during their matches.
Both have worked hard in the offseason and attended the Clarion Way Camp with their teammates in the Summer. Also, both play football for the Sentinels. This could be a great year for both of them!
The road to this years tournament will definitely be different. Both the Bi-County and Regional Tournaments will be held at Fort Hill this year. Hopefully the home mat advantage will give them the edge they need to advance to the State Tournament again.
GOOD LUCK!

Three Seniors To Lead Fort Hill This Season!
 | | |
Fort Hill will be led by three Seniors in the 2001-2002 wrestling season. With the leadership of Seniors Roy Payne, James Divelbiss, and James Summers, this team looks for another successful season. All three have been working hard in the matroom and are expected to give big contributions to the success of this year's team.
"This year's Seniors have big shoes to fill, -period!", Coach Nichols stated, "But, I have been watching them for the pass month and I couldn't be more pleased! Let's face it, when you lose team leaders like Cody Mackie, Denny Burke, Kurt Monington, Justin D'Atri, Adam Fell, Matt Beeman, and Dave Smith----you start the season without any clear leadership. Those guys not only led but they set the tone and more importantly the intensity at every practice! They made the entire team better! It's going to take these guys some time to settle in their role but right now they have really taken the bull by the horns! I'm definitely proud of how much maturity they are showing!".
Roy Payne is coming off a great year! He not only qualified for States last year but proved that he could wrestle with the best this state has to offer! About Roy Payne, Coach Nichols recalled, "Without a doubt, Roy wrestled the best and most exciting match at States that I have ever personally been a part of! During the match, he could have had his top ranked opponent disqualified for biting his arm but he refuse to bring it to the referee's attention because he wanted to beat him outright and not with a DQ! What's that tell you about him?"! He will start the year at 112lbs but will most likely drop to 103lbs by January. Either way, he will definitely be the guy to beat in our area!
James Divelbiss also had a pretty good year! He was the varsity wrestler in the 215lb class in 2000-2001 and had a chance to practice with Kurt Monington every day. Coach Nichols said that, "Intensity is what Jimmy is all about! He is not only very physical but very intelligent. That's a very dangerous combination in the Heavyweight divison! He will be very exciting to watch for sure!".
James Summers is expected to be at the 189lb class this year with Austin Williams wrestling in his own weight class. "He may be the biggest surprise of the season." Coach Nichols said, "He has the ability to be every bit as good, if not better, than Austin was in that weight class. He is a natural 189lbs, so he won't be giving up that much weight and his wrestling really has improved! It's a matter of how bad he wants it-----and right now I would say that he wants it pretty damn bad!"!

Fort Hill ends long Northern streak
 | | | | Austin Williams during his 8-6 win over Northern's Chris Knox |
|
CUMBERLAND -- As Josh Tart pinned Lee Yoder, Fort Hill celebrated their first win over Northern in over 14 years on Thursday night at Fort Hill.
Fort Hill won the match, 45-28 and gave Northern head coach Scott Stough his first loss to a Western Maryland Interscholastic League team in his 14 years as a coach and his first loss to a Maryland team in over two years. It was Fort Hill head coach Bernie Nichols' first win over the Huskies in his nine years with the Sentinels.
Jared Skelley (103), Roy Payne (112), Lance Dicken (119), Chris Brown (130), Tart (171) and James Summers (189) won by pins for Fort Hill. Austyn Williams won by decision, and Glenn Lowery won by forfeit. Brown was down 14-4 before notching the pin.
The Sentinels move to 4-1 in the WMIL and drops Northern to 4-1. There is a three-team tie for first in the league as Beall also stands at 4-1.
"I credit the kids for coming off a very disappointing loss to Beall last night (Wednesday). We were within two matches of winning and came up short. To come around after a disappointing loss like that and face a team that hasn't lost to WMIL Dual-Meet in 14 years was awesome," said Nichols. "We have only one of three seniors with regular varsity experience out of 13 weight classes. We are so excited about the future."
For Northern, Dan Ganoe (135), Darrick Kamp (145), Jordan Brenneman (152) and Trey Brenneman (275) won by pin,and Mitchell Guard (140) won by forfeit.
The loss puts Northern (11-3) as an underdog to participate in the Dual-Meet State Regional Tournament on Wednesday at Beall. Beall, North Hagerstown, Williamsport and Walkersville will be the likely participants. The final posting will be made tonight. Beall hosts the tournament as the top-seed due to their 13-1 dual-meet record.
"Wins like this don't come easy, but they are the ones you remember forever," said Nichols. "Our motto was 'Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently' and after last night's loss we did it a lot more intelligently."
Fort Hill (12-10) will host Frankfort and Allegany next Saturday in a triangular.

Tommy Diehl Award for Outstanding Wrestler is --- Roy Payne!
This year's Tommy Diehl Award winner for the most outstanding wrestler is Senior Captain Roy Payne. Roy has lead this team in every category but takedowns. He had the most wins, the most regional points, the best record, not to mention the quickest pin I have ever personally seen against his Allegany opponent during his junior season. Also, roy is a two time State Qualifier and has a win at that tournament under his belt.
"I know that I harp on Roy's win at states last year alot, but it just reaffirms that if you work hard enough, anything is possible! He hadn't even seen a wrestling mat before his sophomore season, and he worked really hard and went out and easily upset a top ranked opponet!", Coach Nichols stated. "His wrestling, work ethnic, and leadership is really going to be missed, not to mention that Roy is just really fun to be around! I know I speak for the entire Fort Hill Community when I say that I wish him and every Senior the best of luck in what ever they do!"
