Fort Hill HS Wrestling: 2001-2002 Season & Older
Fort Hill Returning Two State Qualifiers in 2001-2002
|Senior Roy Payne|
They now know what to expect at this years tournament. Roy recorded a win in his very exciting match against the top seeded Owings Mill opponent in the 103lb class and then lost two very close matches. Austin recorded a win in the 189lb class before losing two. Both had very good showings that earned them a lot of respect by never letting up during their matches.
Both have worked hard in the offseason and attended the Clarion Way Camp with their teammates in the Summer. Also, both play football for the Sentinels. This could be a great year for both of them!
The road to this years tournament will definitely be different. Both the Bi-County and Regional Tournaments will be held at Fort Hill this year. Hopefully the home mat advantage will give them the edge they need to advance to the State Tournament again.

Three Seniors To Lead Fort Hill This Season!
"This year's Seniors have big shoes to fill, -period!", Coach Nichols stated, "But, I have been watching them for the pass month and I couldn't be more pleased! Let's face it, when you lose team leaders like Cody Mackie, Denny Burke, Kurt Monington, Justin D'Atri, Adam Fell, Matt Beeman, and Dave Smith----you start the season without any clear leadership. Those guys not only led but they set the tone and more importantly the intensity at every practice! They made the entire team better! It's going to take these guys some time to settle in their role but right now they have really taken the bull by the horns! I'm definitely proud of how much maturity they are showing!".
Roy Payne is coming off a great year! He not only qualified for States last year but proved that he could wrestle with the best this state has to offer! About Roy Payne, Coach Nichols recalled, "Without a doubt, Roy wrestled the best and most exciting match at States that I have ever personally been a part of! During the match, he could have had his top ranked opponent disqualified for biting his arm but he refuse to bring it to the referee's attention because he wanted to beat him outright and not with a DQ! What's that tell you about him?"! He will start the year at 112lbs but will most likely drop to 103lbs by January. Either way, he will definitely be the guy to beat in our area!
James Divelbiss also had a pretty good year! He was the varsity wrestler in the 215lb class in 2000-2001 and had a chance to practice with Kurt Monington every day. Coach Nichols said that, "Intensity is what Jimmy is all about! He is not only very physical but very intelligent. That's a very dangerous combination in the Heavyweight divison! He will be very exciting to watch for sure!".
James Summers is expected to be at the 189lb class this year with Austin Williams wrestling in his own weight class. "He may be the biggest surprise of the season." Coach Nichols said, "He has the ability to be every bit as good, if not better, than Austin was in that weight class. He is a natural 189lbs, so he won't be giving up that much weight and his wrestling really has improved! It's a matter of how bad he wants it-----and right now I would say that he wants it pretty damn bad!"!
This will be Austin Williams second straight year as Team Captain. Roy, James, and Artie will be heading in their first year in this leadership role. All should do a great job! Congratulations!!! Now the work starts!!

Fort Hill won the match, 45-28 and gave Northern head coach Scott Stough his first loss to a Western Maryland Interscholastic League team in his 14 years as a coach and his first loss to a Maryland team in over two years. It was Fort Hill head coach Bernie Nichols' first win over the Huskies in his nine years with the Sentinels.
Jared Skelley (103), Roy Payne (112), Lance Dicken (119), Chris Brown (130), Tart (171) and James Summers (189) won by pins for Fort Hill. Austyn Williams won by decision, and Glenn Lowery won by forfeit. Brown was down 14-4 before notching the pin.
The Sentinels move to 4-1 in the WMIL and drops Northern to 4-1. There is a three-team tie for first in the league as Beall also stands at 4-1.
"I credit the kids for coming off a very disappointing loss to Beall last night (Wednesday). We were within two matches of winning and came up short. To come around after a disappointing loss like that and face a team that hasn't lost to WMIL Dual-Meet in 14 years was awesome," said Nichols. "We have only one of three seniors with regular varsity experience out of 13 weight classes. We are so excited about the future."
For Northern, Dan Ganoe (135), Darrick Kamp (145), Jordan Brenneman (152) and Trey Brenneman (275) won by pin,and Mitchell Guard (140) won by forfeit.
The loss puts Northern (11-3) as an underdog to participate in the Dual-Meet State Regional Tournament on Wednesday at Beall. Beall, North Hagerstown, Williamsport and Walkersville will be the likely participants. The final posting will be made tonight. Beall hosts the tournament as the top-seed due to their 13-1 dual-meet record.
"Wins like this don't come easy, but they are the ones you remember forever," said Nichols. "Our motto was 'Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently' and after last night's loss we did it a lot more intelligently."
Fort Hill (12-10) will host Frankfort and Allegany next Saturday in a triangular.
|Roy Payne is 112lb Champion!|

He hadn't even seen a wrestling mat before his sophomore season, and he worked really hard and went out and easily upset a top ranked opponet!", Coach Nichols stated. "His wrestling, work ethnic, and leadership is really going to be missed, not to mention that Roy is just really fun to be around! I know I speak for the entire Fort Hill Community when I say that I wish him and every Senior the best of luck in what ever they do!"

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK(12/31/00-1/6/01) is Justin D'Atri !
Fort Hill Splits at Frankfort to Move to 3-2
The team has been fighting a virus or flu that seems to be hitting just about everyone(including the Coaches). Senior Adam Fell made weight in the morning but was sidelined with illness along with other members of the team. We only hope that we can get over this soon.
On late Thursday night, we found out that West Virginia did not get the 2 Pound allowance that we have had since Jan. 1st until Jan. 15th. Due to this most wrestlers were experiencing weight problems that caused a major shift in our lineup in the lighter weight classes.
I know, I know-----I'm complaining but I really think that it is time that everyone starts obeying the same rules. The powers to be in Charleston and Annapolis need to get on the same page and make it easier to travel across state lines without major rule changes. We know have conflicting stalling rules, weight classes, scheduling rules, and now the 2 pound growth allowance to name a few. Next will might have to wear mouth guards to wrestle in WV.
I'm not taking anything away from a really well prepared Frankfort team that dominated us from 119-145. They looked great and I congratulate them.
Little Sentinels All Win!!
The three Little Sentinels all won their matches on Saturday night before the Varsity matches. Sixth Graders Zach Huffman, Sean Bennett, and Justin Nichols decisioned their Frankfort Mat Club opponets and proved to everyone that all of their hard work is really paying off! Justin Nichols and Zach Huffman have started the season with a 1-0 record. Nathan Bennett now has a 2-0 record! Great job guys and keep up the great work!
How To Care For Your New Uniform
Always wash uniforms - never dry clean them. Dry cleaning can discolor your uniforms and damage the screen-printing.
For best results, launder uniforms immediately after each wearing. Uniforms that cannot be cleaned promptly should be hung individually on wooden or plastic hangers. Metal hangers will leave rust marks. ALWAYS WASH SEPARATELY! DO NOT WASH IN HOT WATER - ALWAYS USE COLD!
For best results in drying, hang on plastic or wooden hangers and let hang dry. If dryer is used, set for AIR ONLY and turn uniform inside-out. NO HEAT!
Please make every effort to take care of these uniforms! We need them to last awhile!
Fort Hill Pins South Hagerstown To Improve to 2-1
Sentinel JVs Dominate South Hagerstown JVs!
Fort Hill Runners-Up at 2000 TR Davis Memorial Tornament
Junior Roy Payne pinned Jonathan Guth from University in 5:04 to win the 103lbs Championship. Roy looked great all day and was really never challenged. He is really eager to avenge his only loss of the season to Nathan Jackson of Beall, who could only manage a forth place finnish.
For the 125lbs Championship, Senior Jason Hillegas pinned Josh Kennell of Meyersdale in 4:40. This should help Jason to return to the Maryland State Tournament again this year!
We had two second place finnishers as well. Seniors Jason Riggleman finnished second at 130lbs and Kurt Monington finnished second in the 275lb weight class.
To take second in the team results, Fort Hill needed some more help though. That help came with good perfomances from the entire team! Senior Cody Mackie in the 160lb class, Sophmore Austin Williams in the 189lb class, and Junior James Summers in the 215lb class finnished third respectively. Senior Adam Fell took fourth place in the 119lb weight class. Others recording wins for team points were Senior Jason MaBee at 112lbs, Senior Vinny Imbesi at 145lbs, Senior Denny Burke at 152lbs, and Senior David Smith at 160lbs.
The team scores were as follows:
1st - Meyersdale(PA) 185.5
2nd - FORT HILL 140.5
3rd - Beall 129
4th - Uniontown(PA) 93
5th - Model(DC) 85
6th - St. James 85
7th - Westmar 58
8th - WaHama(WV) 56
9th - James Buchanan(PA) 54
10th - Allegany 46
11th - Boonsboro 33
The Team Captains for the 2000-2001 Wrestling Season is Cody Mackie, Kurt Monington, Denny Burke, and Austin Williams. They were selected by the team by vote. We hope that you will lead the Fort Hill Wrestling Team to another great year!
