BASEBALL PHRASE OF THE DAY
"CIRCUS CATCH" - Outstanding diving (or leaping) catch by a fielder.
PAST PHRASES ...
"BAND BOX" - A small ballpark.
"BATTERY" - The Pitcher and Catcher on the field.
"BRONX CHEER" - When the crowd boos!
"CAN OF CORN" - A fly ball that is easy to catch.
"CAN'T BUY A BREAK" - When all of the bounces, umpire calls, breaks (good luck) seem to go against a particular team.
"CATCH THE NEXT BALL OR CATCH THE NEXT TRAIN" - Warning managers give to Major League Players who are making too many errors in the field. The warning goes... if the player drops another ball or boots just one more play, he will be sent packing back to Palookaville (the minor leagues)... via Train!
"CHIN MUSIC" - When a pitcher throws a pitch very inside and high to keep the batter off of the plate.
"DUCK SNORT" - A short fly ball or bloop hit (usually hit off the end of the bat) with enough top spin that the ball lands just out of the reach of the outfielder coming in and infielder going out.
"FOOT IN THE BUCKET" - When a batter steps with his/her front foot away from home plate as he/she swings. A "Righty" would step towards the thirdbase dugout while a "Lefty" would step towards the firstbase dugout!
"GOING YARD" - a home run that clears the outfield wall.
"GOPHER BALL" - A pitch hit for a home run!
"HOT CORNER" - Third Base.
"PAINTING THE BLACK" - When a pitcher throws the ball over the edge of the plate.
"PICKLE" - A run down. When a runner gets caught between two players on the opposing team and runs back and forth between them to avoid being tagged out.
"RIDING THE PINE" - Sitting on the Bench.
"SLURVE" - A cross between a SLider and a cURVE ball. A big sweeping slider (fast curveball), it starts on one side of the plate and quickly runs across to the other side with a slight downward drop. The simplest way to throw a "slurve" is to throw a curveball sidearm. (Kids... don't do this at home until you're 18!!!!!!)
"SOUTH PAW" - A Left-Handed throwing Pitcher... However, a Right-Handed Pitcher is NOT referred to as a "NORTH PAW"... that would just be ridiculous!
"TEXAS LEAGUER" - A short fly ball or bloop hit that lands between the outfielder and infielder.
"WALK OFF" - A game winning homerun!
