Zone Drill

Purpose:
To show the players a mid tempo scheme designed
to block multiple fronts.
Designed to laterally stretch the defense
opening diagonal running
lanes with big cutback potential. Initiate
movement at the LOS and climb
to the next level. Teaching the players
sight determination if they are uncovered or covered.
Equipment:
Hands Shields are optional. Ball for center.
Procedure:
Form half line groups by position (3 on 3).
Using defensive players
align players so that they are either uncovered
or covered. Use
base defenses at first then gradually increase front
difficulty. On the snap
of the ball players will carry out their
proper assignment. Mix
it up a little, show stunts, twists, etc....
Coaching
Points: In a 3 step zone the covered
lineman may help defender
if he is head up or inside. Weight transfer
power step 6 to 8 just outside of defender
alignment. Check slant
from play side lineman. Check plug from blitzing
LB'er. Climb to backside backer.
Or play side backer depending on blocking rule.
Help initiate movement then
climb. No piece climb to backer do not waist
time.
