Start Drill/With
Ankle Hold
Purpose:
To teach proper stance and start technique for
offensive lineman.
This drill helps to emphasize the importance of the second
step.
Execution:
Align offensive lineman on a selected line of
scrimmage. The
coach designates block and cadence. The coach
or player will hold
the back foot of the lineman causing him to rip
it free on the second
step after the snap count.
Coaching
Points:
1. The player
should mentally shift his weight to the first foot after
the quick 6 to 8
inch power step.
2.
The toes of the first step should replace the down hand
to help maintain a good
base and not to be over or under stride.
3. The player
knees should be roll over his toes. We want numbers
over knees, and
knees over toes.
4.
The player should keep a flat back and the head up.
5.
The first step should be followed quickly by the second
and third
steps.
6.
Emphasize staying low and coming out hard.
7.
Drill will be done in a variations of 5, 10 and 15 yards.
