HASH

Equipment Needed

  • Three large blocking dummies and footballs

Purpose

  • To teach and practice the proper techniques in getting open in the underneath hash area

Procedure

  1. Position rows of tight ends perpendicular to and 5 yards inside and outside the right hash mark on a selected line of scrimmage.

  2. Place held dummies 12 yards downfield on the hash mark and 5 yards to the left and right of hash marks.

  3. A quarterback holding the football is positioned on the line of scrimmage between the two lines of receivers.

  4. On quarterback’s cadence and snap count, the designated tight end releases from the line and works the space between the two dummies on his side of the hash marks. If the quarterback does not pass him the football between the first two dummies, the tight end works for a position between the other pairs of dummies.

  5. The quarterback is instructed to execute a designated pass drop and pass the football to the tight end between either pair of dummies.
  6. After catching the pass the tight end turns and sprints upfield. He then returns to the opposite receiving line.

  7. Drill continues until all tight ends have had a sufficient number of repetitions.

  8. Drill should be conducted from both the left and the right hash marks and from various field positions.

Coaching Points

  1. Always check to see that tight ends are aligned correctly and are in their proper stances.

  2. Instruct the tight ends to execute their release techniques correctly.

  3. Insist that all tight ends maintain a "good football position" as they work to get open between the dummies.

  4. Insist that the drill be conducted at full speed.

Safety Factors

  1. Proper warm-up should proceed drill.

  2. Drill area should be clear of all foreign articles.

  3. Helmets should be worn with chin straps snapped.
